Goldlink Gets It Right This Time With Diplo & MØ

You're probably already taken a fair share of laps around Diplo and MØ's recent banger Get It Right. But you may not have realized that it still hadn't reached its potential as a track. The playful, Future Bass vibe is addicting, but this new Goldlink verse on the remix took it up a few more levels. Leaning heavy on the Gospel-style piano beat that would even make Macklemore slow clap, Goldlink's verse fit in seamlessly with the soulful vibrance of the original. Goldie has a hardcore following at his shows, but the mainstream still hasn't caught on en masse to his ability as a lyricist. Hopefully this 🔥🔥🔥 remix changes that so he can grow that following to what it should be...#GetItRight

"I Wanna be Your Lover, I Don't Wanna be Your Friend"

It's like clockwork, another Alan Walker remix, another symphony of chords. This time Alan took a swipe at Noah Cyrus's recent single Again with XXXTENTACION. I'm not a huge supporter of anything XXXTENTACION does, but I'll concede the original version of the track has some pop allure to it.

Take that morsel of pop allure and mix it with some melodic progressions and you've got yourself a chill EDM remix. The more I listen to it, the more I appreciate the raspy, Lana Del Rey quality to her voice. If you're a fan of the original, follow the breadcrumbs to Spotify or iTunes to add it to your collection...#NoahCyrusAgain

Run the Jewels' Oh My Darling Gets Flossed

Combine the raw energy of Run the Jewels with the rowdy Trap vibe of Flosstradamus and what do you get? A dope, arena filling, headphone shattering symphony of bass with spicy ad libs. For a bit of context, check out RTJ's original, Oh My Darling (Don't Cry) before jumping into the remix...

Rather than a steady rumbling bass and machine gun raps, the remix) takes a more instrumental driven stance from the start. There aren't more than a few bars repeated and chopped from the original, but it's safe to say Flosstradamus picked the most incendiary samples. The mix of clangy percussion and bass reminds me lot of the type of stuff RL Grime and Baauer put out. Needless to say, it's a good look and a fresh take on a classic RTJ track...#OhMyDarling

Ed Sheeran's Perfect Gets a Chill House Makeover

Over the past year Ed Sheeran's Divide album has continued to gain momentum with each new single. It started off with a bang as Shape of You skyrocketed to the top of the charts and has continued to gain speed with the most recent single Perfect. In my eyes, the book-end singles are the best of what the album has to offer and deserve to be in the classic conversation.

Further cementing that notion is Robin Schulz's remix of Perfect. It's what you'd hope for if someone said "what if someone did a chill house flip of Perfect." The vocals from the original play really well over a quietly rhythmic beat. Matter of fact, the more I listen to it, the more I'm inclined to throw it on the Trop House mix. Whatever the categorization, it's a smooth mix that I'll be zoning out to over the next week...#Perfect

"Almost 23, We're Almost 23 And I'm Still Your Everything"

About a year back, Lido released a track that got a lot of attention in Only One. The track features vocals from Jaden Smith and is as soulful as it is poetic. There are jazzy undertones sprinkled throughout and the stream of consciousness style vocals impart an authenticity that's hard to pull off. Check it out for a refresher...

Fast forward to five days ago when Goldlink chipped in a verse over the original beat. The level of storytelling got ratcheted up about ten levels with Goldlink on the mic. His back and forth, pitter-patter diction adds a level of intrigue that the original didn't have. It may only be two and a half minutes long, but it succeeded in resurrecting the soul of the original while delivering a modern-day lyrical poet effort from one of the best in the game right now...#OnlyOne

Dillon Francis and Halsey Are Bad At Love

Rarely is a song ever so remix-worthy that it deserves it's own EP. Given the success of Halsey's latest album, it's no surprise Bad At Love was deemed worthy of five different remixes. From Autograf to Hook N Sling to Dillon Francis, there were a lot of big names in the mix.

Out of the pool of five, my favorite of the bunch was (unsurprisingly) Dillon's mix. The steady, back and forth knock on the beat and tribal undertones gives the track an added level of intrigue that Halsey's stellar vocals couldn't alone accomplish. It's hard to pull off, but Dillon's mix of rhythmic and chill hits a sweet spot for me. I've been listening to this one non-stop the past two days, so feel free and follow me on over to Spotify or iTunes if you're as big of a fan...#BadAtLove

Been Feeling Gryffin's Remix Since 1966, Now

Is Portugal. The Man's Feel It Still the most hype track out right now? It's a fair question given how much EDM has remixed the track over the past few weeks. To recap, about a month ago I posted ZHU's deep house remix of the track. Fast forward to late last week when Gryffin took a swing at his own melodic house version of the original. The subtly funky beat imparts a calmness to the original vocals, making for a chill start to the track. Then the vibrant chords come crashing in for a jubilant release on the drop. Call it the latest reason to go and check out Gryffin's Castle in the Sky Tour. I'm looking forward to seeing many of y'all at the Warfield on November 10th. For reference check the original video below and feel free to bang out the each of the two remixes if you so choose...#FeelItStill

Skrillex Flips a Bonkers Remix of Kendrick Lamar's Humble

If you're a gambler or someone who enjoys anything high stakes, you'll be a fan of the remix below. Leaving aside the fact that Skrillex decided to go in on a Kendrick Lamar track, he decided to flip the crown jewel of them all, Humble. Check the video for the original below for added context in case you've been hibernating the past year and missed it...

How in the hell do you improve on a modern day classic like Humble? Let's just say I was skeptical, but Skrillex mustered up a 98 mph fastball and brought all the heat he could muster on the remix. The most refreshing aspect of the remix was the acapella lead-in. You'd be hard pressed to find me another EDM/Hip Hop/Trap track that had the balls to start the track sans a beat. Oh and don't sleep on those arena-filling horns post-drop, they go hard af. If I had to give it a grade, I'd give it a B+ because it was an impossible task and Skrillex damn near shot a hole-in-one...#HumbleRemix

"If I'm Evil, We'll Be Going Down"

Wooow! I'm at a loss for words after listening to what RAC did to James Vincent McMorrow's Evil. Nothing against the original version, but the quiet, peaceful, chill that RAC was able to impart on the track is downright amazing. The vocals from James are filled with so much soul, it must have been an easy sell for RAC to work his magic on the Evil Remix.

And work his magic is exactly what he did, imparting an emotion dripped instrumental that sways between gentle guitar plucks and a dramatic string arrangement. Part of me was wondering when the hell the beat was going to drop on the remix, but that's where the genius lies. RAC kicked open a door of possibilities with this one, which means I'm going to have to go back to the drawing board on the type of music I thought he was capable of making...#Evil

Jamie xx Breathes Life Into The xx's On Hold

I'll be the first to admit, Jamie xx was the sole reason I started listening to The xx's music. His vibrant house style is consistently packed with energy, which is why it isn't a big surprise that so many well-known artists and producers like Drake, Gil Scott Heron, and 40 have sought him out for collaboration.
What's best about his style is that it finds a way to compliment the music he helps make with The xx, yet it sounds completely different when he goes solo. Take for example his new remix of The xx's single from earlier this year, On Hold. The original is a quiet, Indie-pop track that succeeds in large part because of Romy and Oliver's vocals. The On Hold Remix on the other hand features a slow building house beat that takes around a minute and a half to gain a full head of steam. The resulting beat showcases one of the more bubbly, upbeat synth progressions I've heard in a while. It sounds like space techno if that was a thing. Whatever the case, it's a much more interesting track with the added tempo. The only vocals on the remix are from the Hall & Oates sample, which give it a whole new lease on life. If anything this made me appreciate Jamie's talents even more, confirming that he's the root of my fandom for all that is The xx...#OnHold

Lorde & Friends Blow It Up on Homemade Dynamite Remix

When Lorde first burst onto the scene, it was clear that the youngin' from New Zealand was destined for success. Her sultry vocals have always made her seem more seasoned than her age may suggest. Even better, after two successful album releases, she's now taking her career to the next level with interesting collabos like the one below. Teaming up with vocalists like Post Malone, Khalid, and SZA may not seem like a huge step forward, but I'd argue it is because she's really pushing to translate her music to new audiences now. There isn't a lot to hang you hat on these days with R&B, but I'd argue that the three artists she chose for the Homemade Dynamite Remix are the ones fighting to keep the genre relevant in Pop music. It's a really chill remix with plenty of bars to hang your hat on. Follow me on over to iTunes or Spotify to cop this new hotness...

"You Are Unforgettable, I Need to Get You Alone"

Leave it to Tiesto to take a chill, dancehall rap track and make it into an addictive dance track. By now my disdain for French Montana is well established, but if you extract the vocals from Swae Lee and put it over a progressive house beat and now we're talking. For the few Hip Hop heads still lingering around this internet hood, check the original below...

Keepin' it 100, I damn near feel asleep listening to the original after starting with the Unforgettable remix. Credit to Tiesto and Dzeko for flipping the original on its head and injecting an addictive synth flute chord progression. What's even better is the remix is a Bad Boy release. I'm trying to wrap my head around the conversation between Diddy and Tiesto over this track. Nope, still can't picture it. Doesn't take away from how dope it turned out...#Unforgettable

"I'ma Rebel Just for Kicks, Now I Been Feelin it Since 1966"

Full disclosure, until ZHU remixed Feel It Still, I had never heard of Portugal, The Man. Aside from the interesting stage name, the five member rock band from Alaska have a fun Indie vibe to their music. No idea what their music sounds like? Press play below...

There's a unique, swanky, smoothness that is half funk, half jazz. After hearing the original vocals on Feel It Still, it's not hard to understand why ZHU would want to remix it. The high pitched tone of John Baldwin Gourley's high pitched vocals sounds strikingly similar to ZHU. He's proven to be a master at speeding up and slightly altering the vocals into samples, so he was quite at home adding a deep house backbone to the original. Picture the addictive vocals of the original given a brand new lease on life with an uptick in tempo. Hat tip to ZHU for providing the intro to Portugal and for translating the track to a whole new EDM audience...#FeelItStill

Nero's Innocence Gets a Homemade Refresh

I wonder why more artists don't release remixes of their own tracks. You'd think the modular approach that many artists employ with samples couldn't be used more freely to create alternate versions of songs. Like for example, Nero's new, "Reopened" version of their classic Innocence. For full context, check out the original below..

Where the original was very heavily soaked in Dubstep, the new version embraces a much more thumping, progressive house vibe. Sure, the vocal samples are the same, but that's about it. You still get the dark, haunting chords mixed throughout, but the heavy, wobbly drops are nowhere to be found. In a lot of ways it shows how their sound as a group has evolved over time, which I can appreciate since it has coincided my ever changing EDM tastes. Join me aboard the hype train for their upcoming new album?...#Innocence

Snakehips Flips Lana Del Rey's Summer Bummer

Generally speaking, I like Lana Del Rey's music. Her throwback vocals always seem to reel me in because of how distinct and melancholy they sound. Even better, when she collaborates with A$AP Rocky, good things usually happen. Knowing all that, it was probably a surprise that I didn't post their recent single, Summer Bummer. Check it below for reference...

My issue with the track was monotonous vibe. Even though Lana can do melancholy with the best of them, it's usually because there's an emotional component to the instrumental that allows her vocals to shine. That didn't happen on the original version, but it did on Snakehips' remix of the track. They added a bit more bounce to the beat and clap to the percussion that really elevated both the vocals and verses. At the heart of it, this is why I love remixes. When done well, like Snakehips did, it can clear a new pathway to a track that previously wasn't there...#SummerBummer

"Let's Kiss and Then Take Off Our Clothes"

Another week, another Whethan heater. It's as if he's about to embark on a huge tour and he wants to keep a steady stream of his music on our recent playlists. Before I get too far, go ahead and take note when he's coming to a city near you...

As far as his new remix of Lorde's Perfect Places, it's out there, but in a good way. The same way you'll hear Baauer and RL Grime occasionally venture off the reservation, Whethan filled the remix with plenty of experimental samples. Between the pops, clacks, and clangs and vibrant synths, there's a whole lot of bass and sultry vocals. It's a fun, upbeat take on Lorde's original, playful pop track. You won't be able to track this one down on iTunes or Spotify, but if you're like me, you're all good with Soundcloud...#PerfectPlaces

"You've Got a Fetish For My Love"

Normally I'm critical of Gucci Mane's dumbed down lyrics and syrupy flow, but today he gets some long awaited dap. Thanks to Galantis's slow-burning, dramatic synth laden remix of Selena Gomez's Fetish, Gucci was able to stand out. Without a doubt, it was the deep, arena filling horns that made his slow flow palatable for a change. For those who like to compare, check the original version below where Selena gets all wet and sultry...

The more I listen to the remix, the more it reminds me of Flume. To be more specific, it's the stop and go synths post-drop that draw the comparison. Where the original was a middle of the road pop track, Galantis morphed it into a stellar slow trap banger. Check it out on iTunes or Spotify if you geeked on that Gucci beat like I did...#Fetish

"Gimme Just a Little of Your Love"

There's an heir of positivity surrounding Haim's music that is impossible to ignore. The trio of sisters are all talented vocalists in their own right, but make an unstoppable team when they combine forces. If you haven't given a listen to their new Something To Tell album that dropped about a month ago, you need to catch up.

One of the standout tracks on the album, Little of Your Love, was recently injected with some tempo thanks to BloodPop. To his credit, he turned a pop sing along into a pop dance anthem. The vocals from the original are there, but let's just say this new mix is a whole lot more dance worthy. It's a fun track that BloodPop found a way to make even more accessible and energetic...#LittleOfYourLove

Louis the Child Drop a Chano Mix and Announce Fall Tour

Despite their stylistic differences, I have a hard time distinguishing Louis Futon's music with Louis the Child. Given the amount of music I've written about for each of them, I'm clearly a fan of what they're both doing. Tonight it was the Child's turn to step into the limelight with a remix of Chance the Rapper's All Night. For the uninformed who haven't taken a few laps around Coloring Book, press play on the YouTube video below for context...

Let's just say Louis the Child took the smooth vibe of the original and cranked the energy level up a few notches. Where the original bobs along with a bubbly bass line, the remix takes a decidedly different percussion led angle. You'll immediately be able to feel the Louis the Child influence post-drop around the one minute mark. The vibrant, bouncy chords are a dead giveaway. Whatever you do, don't miss out on that dope beat break down around the 2:37 mark. The throwback video game synths unleashed at a breakneck pace are a good look. Speaking of a good look, don't miss out on seeing Louis the Child on the road in the coming months. Tour dates below and I'll see y'all in the East Bay in early December...#LastToLeaveTour

"Chew You Like a Cannibal, Red, Redrum"

I'm torn between being confused and impressed by What So Not's latest remix below. I'm confused because it sounds nothing like his characteristically loud and raucous sound, but impressed at the same time because of his ability to pull off a subdued tempo really well. The track is Redrum by Era Istrefi who is a really talented vocalist in her own right. For proof of that, check out her original version below...

It's not that I don't like the original version, I'm just a much bigger fan of What So Not's version. Where the original was slow and melodic, the remix has much more of a personality. In particular, the slow and steady clang of the beat and excitable chords produce an intriguing mix of sounds that somehow create a cohesive vibe. Give it a right click save as on iTunes or save it for later if you're into leasing your music collection...#Redrum
