"I've Been Running with the Wolves, To Get to You"

About a week and a half ago, there was sizeable buzz surrounding Selena Gomez's upcoming new single. No, it wasn't another epic Kygo collaboration, but it was pretty damn close...
Did not know she referred to her base as "Selenators", so learned something new with that post too. Getting to the music, it's in the ballpark of her other EDM crossovers with Zedd on I Want You to Know and Kygo on It Ain't Me. Wolves is soaked with emotional, angst-y lyrics and a soothing chord progression cooked up by the 'Mello man. It skews heavily toward Top 40 pop rather than something you'd listen to at a club, but as long as that's what you're expecting, it's all good. In other words rent or buy it while it's hot and you're not hearing it at every teenage clothing store in the mall...#Wolves

"You've Got a Fetish For My Love"

Normally I'm critical of Gucci Mane's dumbed down lyrics and syrupy flow, but today he gets some long awaited dap. Thanks to Galantis's slow-burning, dramatic synth laden remix of Selena Gomez's Fetish, Gucci was able to stand out. Without a doubt, it was the deep, arena filling horns that made his slow flow palatable for a change. For those who like to compare, check the original version below where Selena gets all wet and sultry...

The more I listen to the remix, the more it reminds me of Flume. To be more specific, it's the stop and go synths post-drop that draw the comparison. Where the original was a middle of the road pop track, Galantis morphed it into a stellar slow trap banger. Check it out on iTunes or Spotify if you geeked on that Gucci beat like I did...#Fetish

Videos of the Week April 28th

This week's top five hit a wide range of emotions from serious to quirky to feel good to funny. Leading the way was Kygo and Selena Gomez's video for It Ain't Me. Neither artist star in the video and to be blunt, the story it told was much deeper and sadder than I imagined when listen to the track. Maybe it's the Trop House vibe or the sultry vocals, but I did not picture that tragic of a tale.

Moving on from the sad to a much more adorable, quirky story from Cashmere Cat. Let's just say the colorful instrumental matched the odd story quite well. If you're as geeked as I am about Big Boi's re-emergence, you'll enjoy his funk filled performance of Mic Jack on Fallon. Sticking with a positive vibe was Jeremih, Chris Brown, and Big Sean's colorful, dance heavy visuals for I Think of You. You had to imagine any video with Chris Brown was going to include some dancing. And last but not least some awkward, yet always on point humor from Jon Oliver. Can't make up some of the stories he tells, which makes it even more awesome that they're usually all true...#JonOliver

"Sipping Whiskey Neat, Highest Floor, The Bowery"

Over the past week it's been one snippet and teaser after another of Kygo and Selena's new single. Today, It Ain't Me was unchained and it wrecked about as much shop as you would expect from two meteoric talents. It's a truly beautiful Trop House ballad that has everything you'd hope for in a Kygo track plus Selena's dramatic vocals. There's the piano lead in, the gentle, but addictingly rhythmic drop and that chopped up vocal sample hook that sticks with you.

After the fourth or fifth full listen, it's really hard not to gush about it. There's this painfully nostalgic undercurrent that really amplifies the emotion of the track. Something about that whiskey neat and Bowery Ballroom reference that opens up a treasure trove of memories for me at least. Sure, it's tempting to try and read between the lines to figure out if there's some subliminal shots being directed toward Selena's former loves (Bieber or Zedd), but that's not for me to speculate on. What I can speculate on is Kygo's upcoming sophomore album and how this new one and his latest release off the 50 Shades Darker Soundtrack are doing everything possible to get me pumped for it's release. If it's anywhere close to as stacked as Cloud 9, then we have a lot of great music to look forward to...#ItAintMe

"Don't Trust Nobody, Said Only I Could Touch Your Body"

With most artists, when I hit play on a new track, there's a baseline expectation for what I'm about to hear. Cashmere Cat is not like most artists because I never know what to expect from him. My best guess for his music is somewhere in the melodic trap neighborhood, but he does so much instrumental experimentation that it's hard to get a bead on him.

For his latest single, he hooked up with uber talented vocalists Tory Lanez and Selena Gomez. Trust Nobody is a easy-listening, almost tropical trap sounding track that will gently pop and clack it's way into your good graces. It's a light snack, not a heavy banger, know what I'm sayin'? Press play if you're in the mood to cool out or add it to your latest Spotify joint if you're getting turnt...#TrustNobody

Videos of the Week January 1st

This week's top five kicks of 2016 in an interesting fashion. Before moving full speed ahead into the New Year, give Mashup Germany's seven minute, 53 song mashup put a nice bow on 2015. Such a great time capsule that will serve as an easy way to go back to a lot of mental bookmarks. And for those of you now starting to experience winter after a warm January, check out Ja Rule reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Why include this on VOTW? Well why not, I can't think of anything more random.

In the land of new music, Skrillex came through with some visuals for his new remix of his own song Stranger. If eye candy is what you're after, imagine for a minute Selena Gomez stalking you. Yea that's not the worst visual and the video reflects that sentiment. And last, but not least a slighty NSFW video for Kendrick Lamar's latest short film, God is Gangsta, contains two of the tracks (u and For Sale) of To Pimp a Butterfly. If the song lyrics don't make you think about some things, then the video sure will...#GodIsGangsta

Videos of the Week December 14

A bit of an EDM heavy top five this week with new videos from a couple formidable duos leading the way. First, you've got the tremendously weird quasi-animated Set Me Free video from Dillon Francis and Martin Garrix. Can't say I've ever seen anything like that or if it's a good or bad thing. For more of a down to earth display of music, Zedd and Selena have your back with their energetic performance of I Want You to Know at Jingle Ball. Rounding out the EDM vibe was The Chainsmokers Roses Uber edition. Couldn't have picked a more fun duo to set the tone for that type of activity.

In non-electronic new, there was a blast from my childhood with the Independence Day 2 trailer. Conspicuously missing was Will Smith, which takes the excitement down a few notches, but I'll remain cautiously optimistic until Rotten Tomatoes tells me whether it's worth seeing. And last, but far from least was Kygo's performance of Firestone at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. The sheer fact that Trop House made it to that type of award event is mind boggling. Kudos to Kygo for continuing to do amazing things...#Kygo

Videos of the Week October 30

If you're looking for interesting and novel, this week is going to be right up your alley. Led by the broken leg, turn doggy-voyeur video from The Chainsmokers, this week was marked by stuff you just don't usually see. The dog/human fist bump at the 1:03 mark is pretty much all you need to see to understand the personalities of Alex and Drew. If gender roles and sexuality are more your flavor, then you'll find Tosh.0's parody of Selena Gomez's Good For You video an interesting watch. Not sure if Carrot Top was needed to drive his point home, but it is interesting that we find women gyrating in no clothes interesting, yet Tosh looks pretty absurd.

Last week if you would have told me that there would be a video with Skrillex playing acoustic guitar while Bieber sings vocals in this week's top five, I would have laughed in your face. Touche Biebs, touche! If Terry Crews going ham on stage dancing with Kendrick Lamar is more your pace, then fast forward to the three minute mark of the These Walls video. That video has enough content in it for a short movie, so make sure the popcorn is ready before you hit play. And last, but definitely not least, there was a used car dealer in Wichita, Kansas that officially put an end to all this Nae Nae dance business. You know a dance move has jumped the shark when an old white dude in the middle of Kansas starts mixing your dance move with the Stanky Legg in an attempt to sell cars...#WhipDance

Videos of the Week August 21st

Sticking with a heavy Hip Hop and R&B slant this week with new videos from Selena Gomez/A$AP Rocky and T-Pain/Juicy J. Like most things Hip Hop, the common thread between the two is the massive amounts of eye candy sprinkled throughout. It's not difficult to look at Selena Gomez, that is a fact. Another fact is that some music is best for gentleman's clubs. Without much thought, I'd put Make That Sh*t Work into that category.

If R&B is what you're looking for, you'll get a kick out of the Uber driver who took the time to film and create a compilation of people singing The Weeknd's Can't Feel My Face. Kudos for the great idea and being fun enough to execute it. If you want a dose of EDM, Disclosure has a fresh slice of brand new house to satisfy that craving. And last, but definitely not least, Heidi Klum proves why she is a baller and could probably drink Jimmy Fallon under the table. Box of lies is a fun concept, especially when Fireball is involved...#BoxOfLies

Videos of the Week March 13th

The top five this week range from haunting to hilarious to happy. Starting with the haunting, it appears Kanye has landed on Anonymous's sh*t list. That doesn't seem like a very fun place to be in a time where cyber security is more of a myth than an actual thing these days. They have some interesting moral high ground points in pointing out the choices he's made in speaking out against people and choosing, then supporting his now wife Kim Kardashian (sidebar: she's not getting linked, she gets linked enough). We'll see if anything real comes of this, but there are unconfirmed rumors that his laptop was stolen in Paris...the plot thickens.

Picking up with the hilarious, Mikey Bolts came through with a stellar vocal performance of Uptown Funk where he channels his inner Family Guy. If you're in the mood for happy, I don't see how Kygo's Firestone could possible NOT cheer you up. I still have yet to push next when listening to that song, it's nothing short of classic. Also on the hPhe lovebird collaboration between Zedd and Selena Gomez. I'll put it this way, I wasn't unhappy watching Selena dance around in the video. Serving as nice exclamation point on the week is Kendrick Lamar's freestyle over Notorious B.I.G. beats. So cool seeing some fresh lyricism over beats that I grew up with...#ToPimpAButterfly

"I Want You To Know That It's Our Time"

Well isn't this the most adorable collaboration know to EDM? Fresh off news that Zedd and Selena Gomez are now a "thing", here comes an official single from the dynamic duo. After a long countdown that was highlighted by a lot of tweets and then a snippet, I Want You to Know has officially landed on iTunes.

The track is gift wrapped for top 40 featuring a made-for-radio hook that is about as east to remember as the alphabet and a chord progression that is as soothing as it gets for EDM. In general, it stays true to form for what you'd expect from Zedd. Aside from the fact that gossip mags will eat this collabo up, the two seem to compliment each others' style quite well. Despite coming from different neighborhoods of contemporary pop, their combination of vocals and soothing synths seem to be a match made in heaven. It's a little too poppy to get more than a few listens on my weekly playlist, but if you're a fan of easy-listening electronic music, this one has your name written all over it...#IWantYouToKnow
