Continuing the trend of holding Hip Hop on his shoulders, Kendrick Lamar proved that he's just as capable of dishing assists to his TDE label mates. Jay Rock is well-known name in Hip Hop, but he hasn't released a lot of impact single lately like the one below. Capitalizing on a multi-faceted beat from Mike Will and some subtle vocal help from James Blake, Kings Dead is an attention grabbing track. Evidently a lot of the other Soundcloud commenters share my disdain for Future on this track, but his boat anchor verse wasn't enough to take away from the fire that everyone else brought. Ironically enough, this is the track #9 that I alluded to earlier in the week off the upcoming Black Panther Soundtrack. Similar to the way the Compton Soundtrack was basically a Dr. Dre album, this provides more hope that the Black Panther Soundtrack will be a side release of Kendrick's. "You Can Bring a Bullet, Bring a Sword, Bring a Morgue"

With some many Hip Hop artists continuing to make songs, artists like Kendrick Lamar that legitimately make music are continuing to stand out. The different between the two may lie in the grey area of semantics, but in my eyes there's a level of composition and instrumentation that helps separate K Dot's music from the masses. He and Chance the Rapper are simply operating at a high level than fill in the blank rapper because of how well they're able to blend their skills as lyricists with interesting beats and songs with meaning.

Also worthy of note is that All the Stars will be appearing on the upcoming Black Panther: The Album. No word on what else will be on the album, but I do know that Track 9 is 3:49 mins long 😬...

Shout out to SZA for the pristine hook by the way. I was already looking forward to seeing the movie and now the prospect of a hype soundtrack makes seeing the movie almost a sure thing. Soundtrack drops on Feb 9th and the movie drops a week later on the 16th. Plenty of ComplexCon related videos to dive into for this week's top five. Without a doubt the most interesting video of the past week was the Kobe Bryant and Kendrick Lamar co-interview. It's not everyday you get two superstars from two different types of entertainment in the same room reflecting on how they each rose to greatness. Speaking of greatness, it's refreshing to see N.E.R.D. back onstage pumping out new music. I don't need to sell you on Pharrell's stage presence, but how about that ensemble of dancers on stage? Let's just say whoever decides to see them in concert will be getting the price of admission.

In case you haven't gotten your weekly mix of Dillon Francis, here's your shot at seeing him candidly answer questions submitted from Twitter. There's a reason why he's been given reality shows, even the most simple question can elicit the most interesting responses. This interview did not disappoint and there are plenty of stories to latch onto during the interview hosted by Wired. In case you're itching for an actual music video, ZHU's new Exhale/Stardust video is a characteristically weird watch. Truth be told he's a weird, artistic dude and that shows through in his cinematography too. Rounding out this week's top five is deadmau5's entertaining Aftermovie for his Red Rocks show. In case you weren't in attendance at the show, he debuted a couple tracks and can now preview them via the video. Videos of the Week October 13th

This week's top five starts and ends with Eminem's fierce lyrical attack on Donald Trump via his BET Awards Freestyle Cypher. The amount of energy it generated throughout music and politics speaks to the time we're currently living in. As more and more of pop culture, entertainment, and professional athletes draw lines in the sand with their stance on our president, it'll be interesting to see who ends up "winning" the social media war in the end.

Aside from super-caustic freestyles, Odesza and Leon Bridges jumped in to remind us that music is as soulful and pure as ever. There's such a warmth surrounding the vibe of Across the Room and the video did a good job of capturing that feel-goodness. Speaking of feel-goodness, nothing butters my bread like some good ol' instrumental experimentation. Hard to imagine someone being more equipped to do that than Mura Masa and we were lucky enough to have the curtain peeled back a bit to see his creative process. If you're in the need of some hype to finish out the week, look no further than Goldlink's performance of Crew at one of his recent shows. You can always tell if an artist is hype but how the crowd reacts to his music. Watch that performance and tell me he doesn't have a hardcore following. Rounding out the top five is some Country music. Not just any Country music though, it's Kendrick Lamar's hits being flipped into Country. Skrillex Flips a Bonkers Remix of Kendrick Lamar's Humble

If you're a gambler or someone who enjoys anything high stakes, you'll be a fan of the remix below. Leaving aside the fact that Skrillex decided to go in on a Kendrick Lamar track, he decided to flip the crown jewel of them all, Humble. Check the video for the original below for added context in case you've been hibernating the past year and missed it...



How in the hell do you improve on a modern day classic like Humble? Let's just say I was skeptical, but Skrillex mustered up a 98 mph fastball and brought all the heat he could muster on the remix. The most refreshing aspect of the remix was the acapella lead-in. You'd be hard pressed to find me another EDM/Hip Hop/Trap track that had the balls to start the track sans a beat. Oh and don't sleep on those arena-filling horns post-drop, they go hard af. If I had to give it a grade, I'd give it a B+ because it was an impossible task and Skrillex damn near shot a hole-in-one...#HumbleRemix

Plenty to latch onto in this week's buffet of top videos. There's plenty of humor, stellar videography, and even a noteworthy duet. Let by the satire of South Park who had their Jim Bob character channel both Kendrick Lamar and Amazon's Alexa simultaneously, the week got off to a quick start. Let's just say hearing a country rendition of Humble was more than a little funny. While we're at it, might at well keep the laughter going with Dillon Francis's cameo on First We Feast's Hot Ones. If you were wondering whether the wings they eat on the show were really hot, your question was answered this week.

Switching to a different vibe, Avicii came through with a trailer to his new upcoming documentary, True Stories. In the doc, you can expect to learn about a lot of the struggles that led to Avicii momentarily retiring. It's going to be an interesting look into the trade offs between health, friendships, and stardom. Speaking of stardom, Jas Davis is at the forefront of visual expression. Being Skrillex's right hand man sure has it's perks. For one, when it's your birthday Skrillex throws you a bone by sending you an unreleased beat to use for your new video. And last, but not least we got a sliver of the late Amy Winehouse. Both Dua Lipa and Gallant did everything in their power to do justice to her classic Tears Dry on Their Own. Basically anytime Gallant is being recorded live, count me in. Dude is hands down on of the best vocalists on the planet right now...#TearsDryOnTheirOwn

Videos of the Week September 1st

This week's top five was relatively cut and dried thanks to the VMAs and a new Taylor Swift video. Despite the fact that everyone watched Game of Thrones over the VMAs, there were still plenty of noteworthy performances. It all starts and ends with Kendrick Lamar who never ceases to amaze when he's firing off bar after bar in front of hot flames. When we look back on 2017, Humble will without a doubt be in the top five of most noteworthy tracks. Speaking of noteworthy, big ups to Logic whose performance of 1-800-273-8255 inspired a 50% uptick in calls to the suicide prevention hotline. While a lot of artists donate money to causes, I have a lot more respect for those like Logic who can be change agents by attacking an underrated problem like depression head on. Rounding out the top three performances was Katy and Nicki's acrobat, basketball inspired performance of Swish Swish. It may be pop as hell, but I have a hard time tuning out that addictive beat.

Outside of the VMAs, Taylor Swift had the internet ablaze with her new Look What You Made Me Do video. You know it's a big deal when they use it as a lead in after commercials on the Megacast for OSU and Indiana. Through five days, the video already has 118 million views. There are few artists who can create a buzz like she can, that's for sure. And in case you needed a bit of humor with the overly music heavy top five, Colbert has your back. This week he decided to go through the roster of White House employees and anoint them all with doppelgangers. Was crazy how spot on many of them were, like the Jeff Dunham and The Simpsons comps 😂...#Colbert

Mike Dean Delivers a Tour Version of Goosebumps

Even though Mike Dean stays behind the scenes making a lot of the music from your favorite artists, my ears perk up when he drops a breadcrumb or two on remixes. The latest example is his Tour Version remix of Travis Scott and Kendrick's Goosebumps. The remix isn't a huge departure from the original, but there's much more of an ebb and flow with the tempo breaks added on the remix.

In related news, if you're wondering where the moodiness of Kanye's music comes from look no further than Mike's new single Three Jewels. The edgy synths and reverb bass remind me of tracks like Love Lockdown off 808s and Heartbreak. Diving deep on the inner workings of who is responsible for music being successful is something I geek out on. You may not care about the ingredients as long as the final product sounds good, but without knowing the ingredients, I wouldn't have an appreciation for the Mike Deans of the world...#Goosebumps

Tis the season for music videos! It's a rare top five full of 100% music videos this week. Led by a few heavyweight efforts from K Dot/Rihanna and Jay Z, every other video seemed to easily fit in the shadow of the first two. That being said, neither were my favorite this week. That honor goes to Major Lazer's cutting edge interactive video for Know No Better. It's an interesting feeling being able to poke around at different camera angles and experience a video from different, unique angles. I'm sure this is only the tip of the iceberg with where technology is heading, but it's a trend I hope to see continue. A close second this week goes to Macklemore and Lil Yachty's video for Marmalade. They did a really good job casting their younger selves in the video and the cameos were fun surprises. Rounding out the top five was the trailer for Eminem's new rap battle movie titled Bodied. Something tells me we've seen something like this cough, cough 8 Mile. Fingers crossed for a fresh story line in Em's foray into film...#Bodied

What better way to welcome the summer months than a top five chalked full of Hip Hop goodness. Led by Kendrick Lamar and his flying car, Perfect Pint was the lead off hitter this week needed. I can't speak to the random animals, unicorns, or super-imposed Gucci Mane in the video, but it made for a chaotic watch. If a much more chill, SoCal Hip Hop video is more up your alley, then Mura Masa and Desiigner have your back. Let's just say Desiigner has never been accused of a lack of energy and that was evident in the video. If you're a Nike fan, then you can move right past Travis Scott's new Way Back video because it's one big James Harden Addidas commercial. Can't hate on the cross culture collabo between Hip Hop and NBA talents, but it comes off a bit too opportunistic for my liking. Speaking of opportunistic, how about Lil Yachty making a fashion splash in his first TV performance. Do the words Lloyd Christmas mean anything to you? Suffice to say, he pulled it off like a champ.

And in case you're not into Hip Hop videos, rounding out the top five is a trailer for the new four part HBO documentary detailing the come up of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. It'll have cameos from the likes of Snoop, Will.i.am, and Eminem cameos, the series will have all the big names you'd hope would help tell the story. The Defiant Ones will premiere on July 9th, so set your DVRs y'all...#DefiantOnes

Plenty of music and a few interesting cameos in this week's top five. Led by two funny and entertaining videos from Big Boi/Adam Levine and Train. Any time you've got Big Boi coming to retrieve his dry cleaning from a disorganized dry cleaning owner Adam Levine, hilarity will ensue. Similarly, any time you toss in cameos from comedians Ken Jeong, George Lopez, Jim Breuer with a Marshawn Lynch appearance, entertainment is on the way. If fiction is more your type, you'll enjoy the storytelling that accompanies Alan Walker's new futuristic video for Tired.

For a sprinkle of culture, how about some #feminism in the house? Needless to say, I'll be watching Wonder Woman's new movie when it comes out in theaters. And yes, she did get her own damn theme song thank you very much. Rounding out this week's top five is an emotional and well-constructed tribute to Paul Pierce. Having it narrated by Kendrick Lamar is about as perfect as it gets too. Tip of the cap to the Clippers for putting that together to commemorate such a legendary career...#ThankYou34

Videos of the Week April 21st

This week's top five skewed heavy toward Hip Hop. Led by Kendrick Lamar's Don Cheadle assisted video for DNA and Nicki Minaj's England themed video for No Frauds, this week started on a high note. That high note continued when Lil Dicky and his smokin' hot co-star of Pillow Talking, Taylor Misiak, did a full 40 minutes on Facebook live. On it they touched on lots of the video themes, as well as tremendously personal things like whether they want to have kids and potential concerns around having kids. I'll leave it at that and let you watch for yourself.

On a more unique, novelty tip Hans Zimmer did some pretty cool live orchestra stuff at Coachella. Luckily someone filmed a full nine minutes of the performance for those of us who weren't lucky enough to attend. And rounding out the top five was a one of a kind interview with 2D and Murdoc Niccals of Gorillaz. Seems pretty run of the mill until you realize they're animated characters who are on camera giving an interview. Those of you who are Gorillaz fans, permission to nerd out...#Gorillaz

Videos of the Week April 15th

This week was a special week in that it brought with it a clear candidate for video. Unsurprisingly, Lil Dicky was the mastermind behind the near 11 minute short movie that ended up being the crown jewel of this week's top five. I can't even really do justice trying to describe it, but I will warn that the first minute or so has a bit of nudity, so be mindful of the NSFW tag. Let's just say the video is a slow paced, non-linear train of thought style conversation that will take your imagination and sense of humor on a roller coaster of emotion. There's literally too much comedy gold in there, so feel free and reference the lyric Genius link as you watch.

On a whole different top four list, there was a slew of new music videos that were worthy of note. Let by Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar's haunting, CGI infused video for Goosebumps and Wale and G-Eazy's new spiffy visuals for Fashion week, Hip Hop ruled the roost on the music tip. An honorable mention goes to Major Lazer, Nicki Minaj, and PARTYNEXTDOOR for their house party with FaceTime themed video for Run Up. Closing out this week's top five was The Chainsmokers who made their SNL debut last weekend. Playing a small, quaint venue like Studio 8H isn't exactly what they're used to, but they found a way to deliver a solid performance. They won't be mistaken as rock stars stage presence wise, but Drew especially is coming into his own vocally, which is fun to watch. I for one am stoked to see them live in a few weeks when they come to Bill Graham. I'll see y'all there...#MemoriesDoNotOpen

Kendrick Lamar Tells Hip Hop to "Sit Down, Be Humble"

Just when you thought Kendrick Lamar was done making news this week, he went all biblical on the whole game of Hip Hop. Today Humble arrived in video form before hitting iTunes and Spotify, which made its release all the more surprising. With a high powered assist from Mike Will on the beat, Kendrick didn't mince any words on his verses. He basically told Hip Hop, "sit down, be humble, I got this game on lock." Switching between a church setting to an urban block and finishing with an ironic last supper re-enactment, there was plenty of symbolism in the mix.

Some say this was even more shade being thrown directly at Big Sean, but I don't buy it. The long story of their back and forth is so indirect that it's more click bait than factual at this point. My favorite lines centered around that "show me somethin' natural like ass with some stretchmarks" line. Hat tip to K Dot for encouraging women to embrace what God gave them rather than being something they're not. At this point, I'd say it's safe to say Kendrick is going to do whatever it takes to steal the spotlight from any and every rapper trying to stand in his way...#Humble

"Don't Tell a Lie on Me, I Won't Tell the Truth 'Bout You"

Remember that day when Kendrick put Drake subliminally on blast a few days after he released his new album? Yea, that happened this week with 's release of The Heart Part 4. I say subliminally because he didn't outright mention Drake by name, but the timing and long backstory of jabs back and forth are starting to feel more direct than subliminal.

There are also rumors circulating that Big Sean was in the crosshairs of Part 4, which lends some credence to the whole purebred rapper vs part-time rapper who went pop debate. What I mean by that is Drake and Big Sean rap, but they cast a wide net stylistically, which make them seemingly less of a true lyricist since they cater to a Pop audience. Seeing that Kendrick has always maintained a stance as the lyrical king of Hip Hop, the battle lines are becoming much more defined with the release of his new track. Will there be a follow up response from Drake or will he tip his cap and continue staying in his own lane? Time will tell, but one thing's for sure, there's nothing wrong with how well More Life is selling after the first week...#HeartPart4

Let's call this the OG edition of videos of the week. Led by what can only be described as a must-see interview between Kendrick Lamar and Rick Rubin that merges generations of Hip Hop, there is more than enough content to get your eyes glued to the screen for minutes on end. Thanks to GQ, they talked shop casually for all of us to watch for a full 50 minutes. If you're curious about the inner workings of what makes Kendrick tick, you'll enjoy it. Then, there was that time Grandmaster Flash took us all back to school to on Hip Hop and what it takes to be a Hip Hop DJ. He even took to the white board to explain the intricacies of the physics behind scratching a record and the shapes of needles and wafers for turntables. Another full 57 minute watch chalked full of Hip Hop history.

If getting schooled on Hip Hop isn't as interesting to you, then you might enjoy the lengths that The Chainsmokers went to create their new lyric video for Setting Fires. There were stunt doubles and lots of cardboard signs, which made it a fun watch. If talent is what you want, then you need to get to know Lido. He's a jack of all trades and he shows you exactly why by putting on an instrumental show for his Dye video. And last but not least, we've got some Jimmy Fallon roasting by the Seattle Seahawks. Evidently Marshon Lynch was licking his chops to get back at him and he delivered a pointed message at the end of the video. Always entertaining to see some back and forth to remind us all that the famous people who are frequently the butt of jokes are capable of dishing it out too...#ThankYouNotes

"I Don't Wanna Know Know Know, Whose Taking You Home"

A cheerfully somber tropical sing-along from Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar? Sounds good to me! I'll be the first to admit, this isn't at all what I expected when I pressed play, but that's not a bad thing. In hindsight, the cover art and playful font on the cover art should have been a clear sign pointing toward a tropical vibe. It's awesome how far Trop House has come, so maybe this is the first of more Trop Pop to come?

Labels aside, it was hard to really dig in on Kendrick's verse because of the playful vibe of the track. He's is in his zone when he can put his storytelling on full display without having to compete with such jingle-friendly beat. All that being said, hearing Adam Levine and K Dot on a track together was a fun novelty. With this track, Kendrick makes another solid addition to his growing list of collabos. Of his latest cameos, his contribution to Sia's The Greatest has been my favorite. Enjoy this one responsibly before Top 40 takes it behind the woodshed...#DontWannaKnow

Normally I wait until the end of the week to post videos, but Sia and Maddie Ziegler take it to another level, which makes them deserving of their own mid-week post. This time they chose a spooky, jail setting for Sia's new single featuring Kendrick Lamar. Before you get all excited about a K Dot verse in the video, temper those expectations because you'll be listening to it a few times before you discover his verse missing on the visuals. You'll need to fast forward two minutes on the Spotify or iTunes version of The Greatest to get another tastefully scripted 16 from Kendrick.

Kendrick verse aside, the track is pretty awesome in it's own right. Sia's unique vocals always play well in an inspirational setting. Sure, it's pop, but it's forceful in it's positivity to a point where you'll find yourself nodding your head and looking forward to singing along with the hook. All in all, it's one of the more energetic, catchy singles I've heard in a while, so enjoy this one before top 40 chews it up and spits it out for the next six months...#TheGreatest

As we go full steam ahead into Summer, it seems like music videos are beginning to take over the top five. Maybe it's an overall lack of interesting late night skits, or it could be an influx in breath taking performances and music videos. Speaking of performances, this week was absolutely dominated by Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar. You won't see many performances quite like their rendition of Freedom at the BET Awards. How they managed to include that much water on the set without electrocution is beyond amazing. So much splashing and wet hair swinging. Then you throw in some K Dot spitting on the mic. GAME OVER!

In the "all the other videos" category, there was plenty more music. Let by a throwback filtered Majid Jordan video for Make It Work and a very chill video from Gallant for Miyazaki. Who needs multiple camera angles when you've got a nicely set table and a bottle of wine, right? Then there was the silhouette inside the ice cube appearance by members of X Ambassadors, A$AP Ferg and Jamie N Commons in Low Life. Lots of pain and desperation in that one, but a great track. And last, but not least we've got the latest GWDJ appearance by The Chainsmokers. This time they performed their latest #1 single, Don't Let Me Down with Daya on GMA. Their live performance has come a long way to the point where they can captivate an audience no matter what venue they're performing at...#DontLetMeDown

Sticking with new music, both BJ the Chicago Kid and Majid Jordan released visuals for their new singles. On one hand you've got some Kendrick Lamar in studio with Hannibal Burress playing a drunken cupid. On the other you've got some cool augmented reality from Majid Jordan. Both entertaining in much different ways.

On the funny tip, it all starts with Snoop's narration of an epic battle between a squirrel and a snake. We can only hope that his Planet Snoop YouTube channel will actually become a real thing.
