It's On Again...Alicia Keys is Back

Out of the Marvel comic movies, I'm not ashamed to say that the Spider Man movies are my least favorite. Given, there's still competition with X-men and Avengers leading the way, but I still feel like the apathy I have toward the series puts me in the minority. Either way, The Amazing Spiderman II is coming soon and with it a formidable soundtrack.

It doesn't get more buzzy that a new track by Alicia Keys featuring Kendrick Lamar and produced by Pharrell. The only problem with the sticker shock is the expectation that ensues as a result of the names on the track. Unfortunately, the track didn't surpass my lofty expectations, but it was cool hearing Alicia over a funky beat. The 0 to 60 ferocity that Kendrick attacked the mic was a little unnerving, but it's now becoming a part of his aura as an artist. It worked well on the Radioactive remix, not so much on the smooth grooves of It's on Again. Combine this beat with Pharrell's new one Gust of Wind and I'm starting buy into the prospect of P carrying the torch of funk into the future. I'm iffy in seeing the movie, but the Soundtrack looks to have a lot of potential...#ItsOnAgain

That Time Deadmau5 Mixed Animal with Old McDonald

Sadly, I wasn't able to cross attending Ultra Music Festival off my bucket list this year. In hindsight, I probably would have been more than a little disappointed if I had went this year because Avicii was a late scratch from the concert lineup because he had to have is gall bladder removed. Luckily, Deadmau5 volunteered to fill in for Avicii at the last minute, so there wasn't a huge uproar. Queue up the four minute span where he flipped Martin Garrix's Animals into one of everyone favorite nursery rhymes (starting at the 27:30 mark)...

And what tops it all off...Martin Garrix's tweet acknowledging the mix...

Even though there was a little spat between Deadmau5 and Tiesto when he questioned Joel's intentions filling in for Avicii, it seems like the festival in general has been a big hit. Someday Ultra...someday we will meet...#UMF2014

Flute Driven, Chill House

With every passing day, I feel more and more like that kid who grabbed the end of the kite string, only to be led around by the wind on a wild adventure. The wind that I speak of is the current state of EDM. It's a powerful force right now that continues to rapidly change directions and take the form of many different manifestations.

One of the manifestations I'm really starting to take a liking to is Chill House. The use of synthesizers as the foundation for easy listening music driven by woodwinds has a lot of potential in my mind. I posted a Sam Feldt remix of Mumford and Sons a few weeks back, but he's starting to emerge as a stand out artist. His new track with De Hofnar is cheerfully upbeat, marked by a memorable symphony of flutes and cascade of strings that take you on an adventure. If you're looking to rage, this one definitely wouldn't make the playlist, but it works in any other setting because of how seamlessly it's put together...#Bloesem

Videos of the Week March 28th

Really the only thing you need to take away from this week's round of videos is that their is going to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie....and it's produced by Michael Bay. I'll let that sink for in a minute for all the 1980s kids in the audience who rocked every action figure and memorabilia known to mankind. I'm not sold on the fact that Michael Bay will have an appreciable effect on the overall movie since he's had hit and misses in the past, but his recent string of Transformer movies has the arrow pointed in the right direction.

In other news, you need to watch Jimmy Fallon and Russell Crowe cut it up last night singing Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. As mentioned earlier in the week, Sam Smith needs to be a name in your musical vocabulary. Ellie Goulding is still adorably infectious and Krewella remains the artist I'd call first if I wanted to throw a killer rager...#PartyMonster

"Headlights Shining, Dark Night I Drive On"

I've been known be effusive in my praise for Drake's ability to vent on the mic about deeply personal issue. The amount of courage it takes to reflect on your most personal feelings about life and family to millions of listeners can never be understated. It's always been something I've admired in some Hip Hop artists and, to a large extent, has determined what I post on this blog.

Drake may be great at being emotionally accessible, but nobody...and I mean nobody will ever be able to touch Eminem's ability to craft a deeply personal story. If anybody has any qualms with Eminem, I invite you to listen to two of his songs. First, listen to Cleaning Out My Closet, which is regarded as a classic because of the way he describes his turbulent upbringing in a brutally honest portrayal (below)...

Now, twelve years later, listen to Headlights. Take note of the guilt he lives with on a daily basis because he admits to writing Cleaning Out My Closet out of vengeance. It takes a lot to come clean about intentionally inflicting pain on your mom. Having matured over the years, he's able to reflect and appreciate his mom (Debbie Mathers)'s ability to be both a mom and dad.

Anybody who has witnessed Eminem's growth over the years should get choked up when listening to Headlights. It all comes to a culmination on the last verse of the track where he imagines dying in plane crash. As the plane is going down he thinks back to the last interaction he had with his mom as her headlights drove away. They haven't spoken since and he feels really sad that he can't tell her how much he loves her before the plane comes down.

It's a tough story to listen to, but it's hard not to really appreciate how far Em has evolved as a person over the years. Going from lashing out as a young kid growing up to really understanding and appreciating the people who he ultimately owes gratitude and wishes he had a better relationship with. I'll say this too, Nate Ruess was the perfect vocalist for the hook. Just a great overall collaboration and it will ultimately rank in my top 10 favorite Eminem songs when all is said and done...#Headlights

Sometimes Animated Movie Soundtracks Aren't So Bad

When I see "from (fill in the blank animated movie soundtrack)" I'm usually more than a little skeptical of it's potential. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Angry Birds, but in the grand scheme of things, Rio or Rio 2 may be my third or fourth favorite of the series. Yet, when I saw Ester Dean featuring B.O.B., there was an unusual amount of confidence that came over me before listening...

...and that ended up being a well-founded intuition because the song wasn't all too shabby. Yea, it's a little sing-songy, but the calypso rhythms are fun at worst. I'll continue to throw credit Ester's way for her ability to craft songs and sing hooks with the best vocalists out there. Not sure if the movie will be worth seeing, but the soundtrack looks interesting....#Rio2

"This Ain't Love, It's Clear to See"

Maaaaaaaannn, anything Sam Smith creates these days is untouchable. Track after track, I'm left thinking, how can he keep up this ridiculous run of great tracks? I still have yet to eject his classic Nirvana from the latest ongoing playlist I put together. Following up his previous two singles Lay Me Down and Money on My Mind, he delivered a roundhouse kick of soul with Stay With Me.

From the first gentle piano notes, you just knew it was going to be a great track. What I didn't expect was the welcome boost from the backup singers on the track. Don't worry you also get the usual high octane vocals from Sam that put on full display his versatility. If you're not on pins and needles by the 2:10 mark when he flies solo acapella, then we simply don't see eye to eye musically my friend. I'm going to continue patiently waiting the release of his debut album In the Lonely Hour while I cool out to his new one below a few more times...#StayWithMe

The Black Keys Unleash the Fever

It helps to have a sound that everybody recognizes as soon as a song starts. The Black Keys' bluesy, indie rock style is a great example of having a staple sound. The duo from Akron, Ohio have released seven albums, which have subsequently let to seven Grammys over the past twelve years. There's no doubting that when they burst onto the scene over a decade ago, they filled a void in music at the time and have continued to expand on that recent success with each release.

Their next release just happens to be coming later this spring in the form of Turn Blue. The first glimpse we have of their upcoming album found its way onto the internet today. Fever is equipped with the same thumping garage rock sound they have crafted over the years. There's enough blues in the mix to induce toe tapping and the quirky synths give the track some personality. May 13th is coming soon enough, let's hope the album dedicated to a Cleveland late night TV host from the 1960s named Ghoulardi ends up living up to expectations...#TurnBlue

Nobody Can Do it Like Aaliyah...but BANKS Came Close

Every time an artist covers a famous Aaliyah track I get an immediate urge to go back and cycle through my favorites from her. It all began with Back & Forth and then she hooked up with Timbaland to make tracks like We Need a Resolution and Are You That Somebody?. She will always be tightly associated with my mental model of what 1990s R&B sounded like. If you need a refresher, check the original video for Are You That Somebody? (below)...

Since Aaliyah had such a distinct style, artists have been reluctant to cover her music over the years. This week, BANKS took on the tall task of tackling one of her most well know tracks. The smartest decision she made was choosing to go the acoustic route with the cover. It proves that in order to equal great, you have to be great in your own right. That's exactly what BANKS showed as she went toe to toe with the original vocally. Especially if you were an Aaliyah fan, give this one a listen because BANKS in the real deal Holyfield...#BANKS

Bobby Ray is Constantly on the Come Up

When B.O.B. puts his mind to it and makes soulful, thoughtful music, there aren't many on God's green earth who can compete with him. The most recent example of that is his church organ aided, take 'em to church anthem Get It. To put it frankly, the sample taken from Jimmy Cliff's Many Rivers To Cross provided an excellent canvas for Bobby Ray to assert himself on. Check the sample below...

The fact that B.O.B. is offering the track up for free leads me to believe that it isn't intended to be a lead single off an upcoming album. Still, it's a great listen because the combination of verses and uplifting vibe isn't something you hear everyday. Man, I hope there's a lot more of this to come from Bobby Ray in 2014...#GetIt

Videos of the Week March 21st

There's little doubt which video gets the top spot this week. Whoever you are Jesse Hill, you deserve some love for finding a way to creatively express Beyonce's Drunk in Love through iOS Emojis. Aside from that, Zedd and Chromeo came through with some new visuals that were both entertaining in their own ways. I did appreciate the fun wedding story in Chromeo's new one for Jealous (I Ain't With It). You better believe I'm gonna be pressing F5 on the internet until the studio version of Drake's new one Call on Me drops. As a solid bookend to the week, Jimmy Fallon came through with an entertaining parody of the First Kiss video...#FirstLick

Capital Cities Makes Uplifting Music

Sure, Capital Cities new single was actually released a year ago as part the Iron Man 3: Heroes Fall Soundtrack. I get that it's been out a while, but that doesn't mean it's any less awesome. Similar to the way Safe and Sound got everyone collectively out of their seats, One Minute More has a fun, inspirational mood. It was just released a week ago as part of the re-released deluxe edition of In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery. I think it's safe to say I'm on the Capital Cities bandwagon...#OneMinuteMore

"When I Met You in the Summer"

It may be a little early, but Calvin Harris is ready to kickstart the warm weather with his new single Summer. It’s safe to say that Calvin will continue to have a leg up on competition in the EDM world because of his ability to chip in his trademark vocals on the hook. The synths offer exactly what you’d expect for a summery track, injecting jubilant energy into the track. Word has it this is the first single off his upcoming fourth studio album.

Lucky for us, it landed on iTunes yesterday, well before the masses have had a chance to consume it. Do yourself a favor and cop it so that you can deal it for some social currency among your friends you’re spending Spring Break with…#Summer

Big Boi Mashes Up With Stevie Wonder

What happens when Big Boi's She Hates Me is mashed up with a classic Stevie Wonder track (Part Time Lover)? Well, you get a really chill, jazzy track. For those of you who haven't been privy to the legendary skills of Stevie throughout the years, please press play below to get some internet schooling...

That being said, I don't think I'd put this in the top 5 of Big Boi's recent mash ups. Don't get me wrong I really enjoy that he's going way off the reservation with some of these remixes, but this one didn't hit home with me. Frankly, I wish that Stevie could have played a bigger role in the track rather than hearing Cudi harmonize. If you're in the mood for chill with a little bit of Hip Hop, give this one a try and be forewarned that you may get slightly bored with it...#MashUpMonday

The Australian EDM Scene is Flourishing

This whole Tropical House movement is starting to grow legs and gain some momentum. I'll admit there's a soothing, melodic vibe to the movement that's hard discount. I posted LDRU's remix of Miami Horror a few months back and their new one with Yahtzel has the same bassline intensity, but The Only One is much more laid back and breezy. Feel free and add this to the mounting evidence that the Australian dance music scene and growing rapidly. I enjoy the fact that we're still able to experience their new directions with EDM despite being half a world away. I say keep it comin', the world could always use more perspectives on dance music...#TheOnlyOne

Timeflies Conquers Pompeii

I tell you what, Timeflies is making a pretty convenient argument that remixing other well-known singles in a unique way might be all you need to be successful as an artist. I say that with two caveats:
1) they also are capable of making their own great music, so they aren't just a one trick pony and
2) their unique blend of Hip Hop and pop isn't easy to duplicate when remixing non-Hip Hop songs. Plus, Cal can sing, rap and perform to the camera like he does every Tuesday (below)...

Did they do it better than Bastille? No, I wouldn't go that far, but I will concede that they made the song likeable in a completely different way. What was originally a high-yield, pop-rock ballad, is now a fun, sing-songy winter anthem. It seems all too perfect to match the general melancholy sentiment caused by the brisk winter with original chord progression from Pompeii. Did I catch a "snowpacalypse" somewhere in there too?...#AllTheWay

Duck Sauce and Friends Bring the Energy

Skrillex, Kill the Noise and Milo & Otis remixing a Duck Sauce track?!!? Yes, please!

The buzz created by the track below seems perfectly timed with Skrillex's new album, Recess, which is scheduled to hit iTunes on Tuesday. As you might expect, this little nugget of audio goodness is packed with a punch comparable to a 5-hour energy. The playful, children singing throughout the track drives home the fun vibe of the track. Sometimes having too many cooks in the kitchen can result in a mess, but this one didn't disappoint. I wouldn't go as far as to say that it isn't a mess, it's a beautiful mess of electo-house rhythms...#NRG

Videos of the Week March 14th

Lots of variety to chew on for this week's top five videos. The best of which was BANKS video for Brain. The hauntingly seductive visuals matched the aura of the track perfectly. I really hope more people start catching on to her creativity as an artist.

Beyond that, Asher took a trip to the skating rink, showing a fun Indie side to his musical repertoire. Despite the terrible tragedy at SXSW this week, shows did go on and there was a tremendous amount of hype surrounding Kanye and Jay Z's performance. I'm a big fan of concert intros, which is why H.A.M. was my favorite of the amateur videos shot. If you're in the mood for a sexy workout video with plenty of hard bodies and washboard abs, you'll appreciate Trey Songz new one. Finally, I'm more than a little excited for James Brown's life story to be told on film. Mostly because Tate Taylor (director of The Help) is directing it, but also because James Brown is an interesting dude....#GetOnUp

"Everything We Touch Turns to Gold at Night"

Would it be unfair to compare Say Lou Lou to MGMT? I ask because the comp was the first thing that came to mind when I listened to Everything We Touch. The vibe of the track is part Madonna, part new school synth-pop aimed directly at the hipsters who want nothing more something a little different, but stress-free.

Sure, it doesn't hurt that they are attractive Swedish/Australian twins, but the duo has a fun aura about their music. The Kilbey sisters are equipped with soft and calming voices that sound powerful when fused together. No word on what their upcoming album will be titled, but word has it, it's going to land on iTunes in September. Let's all collectively hope they can keep their momentum going to a great debut album...#EverythingWeTouch

Big Boi Switches Lanes on A-Ha

Another week, another awesome Big Boi track spun a completely new direction. I definitely didn't see the a-ha sample coming, but hell, at this point let's just roll with it. This week, it's a difference of one vowel with Big Boi's Lines off of Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors becoming Lanes.

Yes, you will in fact have a-ha's Take On Me in your head the rest of day if you listen to this, so listener beware. The vocals from both tracks are evenly represented on the mash-up with a good amount of chopping of the beat. It's skirts dangerously close to being disjointed, but the sheer novelty of the track combined with the familiarity of the sample make it listenable. Honestly, the alien driver cruisin' in the gif above is my favorite part...#Lanes

"I'm a Black Man, I Could Dunk"

Quite a week for your homeboy Frank Ocean. The same week that he gets sued by Chipotle and begrudgingly pays back said fine-quick-service-dining chain back with a blunt statement on the check, he gets into a fun new mess of a track put together by Converse. Check the video below for a behind the scenes look at the making of the track...
At this point I would compare Converse to one of those kids who went to the soft drink fountain indulging in every flavor imaginable. Last we heard from them, they were mixing Gorillaz, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and Andre 3000 on Do Ya Thing. Now they're on to bigger and better things with Diplo, Frank Ocean and Mick Jones/Paul Simonon from The Clash. The track is a mix of reggae and soul with a punk finish. It has a fun Indie vibe to it that makes the whole mash-up palatable. Who know what they will come up with next, but I'll say that I'm at least a little curious...#Converse

Some Tracks Are Too Good To Be True

Before you uncontrollably spaz out after noticing the collaboration below, know that it is not passing the smell test. It's been processed, cut and pasted together to form what we all hoped was an epic collaboration. Though it was initially rumored that Kanye produced the track and it was a leftover from Daft Punk's latest album, it's all just too good to be true. Thanks to the diligent folks on Reddit leading the investigation, this is what we know.

First and foremost, the synths sound a whole lot like the synths from the track The Son of Flynn off the Tron Legacy Soundtrack. Yes, that makes it sound a lot like a Daft Punk song since Daft Punk produced the Tron Legacy Soundtrack. Instrumental below for reference...

Second, although nobody seems to have heard Jay Z's verse on the track prior to today, his references to an iTouch and Blackberry date the verse to somewhere around 2009 when the Tron Legacy Soundtrack was being put together. Third, the vocoder vocals sound like 100% genuine Daft Punk. The vocals, combined with the never before heard Jay Z verse are what the die hard believers are holding onto as far as believing that it's a new track. Nobody has stepped forward to take credit for the mash-up or legitimize it as a demo, but I'm willing to bet the story is only beginning with this one. I'm more impressed by whoever did it than impressed by the sound of the track since it sounds like a demo. I don't think it would have lived up to expectations had it been real, but for a mash-up/demo, well done whoever threw this together...#Computerized

Divergence Continues With Kendrick & Tame Impala

When the tracklist for the Divergent Soundtrack found its way on the internet a few weeks back, the track below was one that I circled with a red pen. Not just because Kendrick Lamar is on top of his game...and Hip Hop for that matter, but because he was collaborating with up-and-coming Australian Indie group Tame Impala. Before you jump to pressing play below, take note that Backwards is a remake of Tame Impala's single Feels Like We Only Go Backwards. Video below for those who aren't aware of the original...
My first reaction when hearing the original was "how old is this because it sounds like it is straight from the 70s?" Taking it one step further, if you like either the original, you need to check out Say Lou Lou's cover of the track, which is every bit as awesome as both versions in this post.

The track may only be a few years old, but it has a throwback vibe to it that adds to the intrigue of Kendrick presence on the new version. You better believe he spits with vigor on the track, yet he finds a way to keep the storytelling accessible by resisting needless vulgarity. It's sad that it's a challenge for most Hip Hop artists to tell a compelling story without raging vulgarity, but this is yet another great example of why we should appreciate the talent of Compton's Prince. Oh and tally another +1 to the Divergent Soundtrack that drops in less than 48 hours...#DivergentSoundtrack

A Little Saturday Night Grime

As I continue to get caught up in trap, I'm finding myself gravitating more and more toward RL Grime. A big reason for that is the incredible amounts of bass the LA native is able to infuse into house samples. For example, this week he released a new one featuring the duo What So Not called Tell Me. The track starts off with an innocuous harmony that forecasts a peaceful track. Then, around the half minute mark a slow build up emerges, giving way to a drop that begins and entirely different chapter of the track. The resulting cacophony of horns, bass and vocal sample are awe inspiring. Yep, this one is a must add to the Best of Trap playlist I've got cooking in iTunes...#TellMe

Videos of the Week March 7th

Definitely an entertainment centric top 5 videos of the week, but it's hard to argue against Batman and Transformers. Yes, Mark Wahlberg > Shia LaBoeuf, but just put Optimus Prime against a band of bad guy robots and I'm in. Aside from the awesome movies that are coming out, I'm also excited about the Monster Go DJ that araabMusik expertly demoed. Shoot, you might as well call it a baby MPC, which is wild considering how transportable it is.

In other news, Aloe Blacc finally created his own video for The Man. It'd been so overused by so many commercials that the real release is anti-climatic. The real surprise of the week came from the Game of Thrones...mixtape? What wait? Interesting move, but I can't complain one bit because Wale, Big Boi, and Common to name a few...#GameOfThronesMixtape

This is Tropical House

I'm still not entirely sure what Tropical House is, but if I were to put my finger on what it sounds like, I'd point right at Thomas Jack's remix of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Although I wouldn't dare take a stab at pronouncing Israel's last name, I do appreciate his soulfully calm vocals over the feel good beat. Yea, this one will make you reminisce back to that time in Cancun or Cabo where the drinks were aplenty under the umbrella shielding you from the tropical sun. I'm just appreciative that someone is taking a growing genre of dance music and trying to form another arm that is just as novel as it is weird...#TropicalHouse

Martin Garrix's Brand of EDM Fills Rooms

At this point, Martin Garrix has become a household name thanks to his fiendishly addictive hit Animals. As such, there have been a lot of people tapping their feet wondering what he would come up with next. Well, that next thing is his new track Proxy. Staying true to form, the track finds a way to fill the room with an engaging chord progression that gives way to a gradual build up and epic drop. The resulting post-drop synths are the type that DJs can rely on to fuel the dance floor. The track has a lot of personality, but the main point I want to get across is that it is a rowdy, lose yourself type of EDM anthem. This should without a doubt find it's way into every self-respecting dance club this Spring. Oh and did I mention it's free to download?...#Proxy

Gorgon City is a Funky Place

While we're at it, might as well keep the swanky British lounge music rollin' this week. Next up is Gorgon City's new one, No More, featuring the vocals of Liv. I'd almost go as far to say this is new age disco with it's heavy undertones and addicting dance vibe. Better yet, the lyrics are as sassy and defiant as you'd expect from a track named No More. It's a bummer I don't have plans to travel to England any time soon because I'd love to catch one of their shows...#WelcomeToGorgonCity

Feel Good Rhythms is All RAC Knows

I haven't been aware of RAC for very long, but I'm continuing to be impressed by his organically positive music. His new track, Tear You Down, featuring Alex Ebert is half Indie, half electronic dance and 100% easy listening. Prior to the track, I had never heard of Alex Ebert, but I now know that he's the lead singer of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes. I can't say I like this as much as RAC's previous single Let Go, but when combined, both make me want to go and cop his new seven song Strangers pt. 1 EP that hit iTunes today. If you haven't heard of Remix Artists Collective, you need to throw a dash into your latest playlist to spice it up...#StrangersPt1

Collin McLoughlin Carries Deathcab's Transatlanticism

Most EDM producers are quite content with grabbing other artists' songs and translating them to their own heavily synthesized style. What makes Collin McLoughlin different is that he can take it a step further by handling the vocals on his own. Sure, he's got his own chill, melodic production style, but the fact that he isn't afraid to step behind the mic shows an added layer of talent that deserves praise.

His latest remix of choice is Deathcab for Cutie's Transatlanticism. I'd say it's safe to throw the original in the category of classic ballads, but feel free and pass judgment yourself...
The best part about Collin's remix is that you can cop it for the price of one Facebook like. Personally, I'd suggest clicking every link on the page after hitting the like button, but you may not have a playlist devoted to his music like you're boy. Either way, enjoy this one for it's emotion packed, bass heavy vibe...#Transatlanticism

"I Love You Like Blood Do"

I've said it before and I'll say it again, great soundtracks are like unicorns these days. Back in the day (90s) a new, high profile soundtrack littered with high profile artists came out every week it seemed. With the backing of Interscope, it's looking like the Divergent Soundtrack is going to be one of those rare awesome compilations. With tracks from Kendrick Lamar, Ellie Goulding, A$AP Rocky and M83, the hype is building.

This week the slow leak of the album started with Ellie Goulding's Beating Heart. It was a solid start to the soundtrack that Pia Mia and Chance The Rapper continued moving forward with Fight For You. The track is a gentle, poppy ballad, but it was interesting hearing Chance The Rapper contribute a jittery verse over the Clams Casino produced beat. It's easy listening and chill, which is in stark contrast to what I usually post, but you know I like to stay all over the place. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this probably isn't the last track I'll be posting from the soundtrack over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for more to come...#Divergent
