Videos of the Week July 7th

This week we got another Tiny Desk highlight to go along with a few music videos and some obligatory novelty. I've posted quite a few of NPR's Tiny Desk videos, but you'd be hard pressed to find another one better than the one below. Of course Chance performed a poem that he wrote while driving to the NPR offices. Luckily he had some DC traffic because what resulted was a fun watch.

Moving along to music videos where Ke$ha made a triumphant return on Praying. She's been through a lot over the past few years and if her new single is any indication, she's doing a hell of a job channeling that emotion. On a similarly invigorating way, Run the Jewels new claymation roller coaster video for Don't Get Captured was unique. Spooky is the word that comes to mind, which fits the vibe of the track quite well. If comedy is what you're looking for then you may be interested in James Van Der Beek's new show "What Would Diplo Do?" I'll give it to him, it was bold to cast himself as Diplo, but we'll see if the mockumentary has more than a few silly laughs to carry the series.

And last, but not least, this week delivered a new trailer for a star-studded new Jumanji reboot. The cast definitely gets your attention with Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and The Rock leading the way, but it makes you wonder whether or not they will be able to pull off a serious plot like the original did. Maybe it'll be an upgraded version of the original with a huge dose of comedy added to the mystery. Maybe it'll be one huge, contrived cluster. We shall see, at least we have until Christmas to hold our judgment...#WelcomeToTheJungle

VIdeos of the Week May 27th

Like many weeks, this one was ruled by a slew of new high profile EDM released. My personal favorite of the bunch was Odesza's Late Night video put together by some of their most adventure seeking fans. Whether it's jumping out of planes, dangling feet off of cliffs or scaling mountains, the experience they put together was pretty awesome. Nipping at the heels of #1 was Kygo and Ellie's video for their recent collabo First Time. Plenty of sorrow and memories mixed with fire and ashes, which makes for an emotional video. Rounding out the EDM videos is Martin Garrix and Troye Sivan's new one for There For You. Shot in beautiful San Francisco, they couldn't have picked a better setting for their new track. #ImBiased

Outside of EDM, it was cool to see an updated trailer for Marvel's next money pot, Spiderman: Homecoming. It's going to be hard to continue the roll the franchise, but they've got an optimized formula for making movies that has everyone eating out of the palms of their hand. And round out the top five was a hell of duet from John Legend and Gallant. If you weren't already considering seeing John in concert, you should reconsider that decision because Gallant will be joining him as the opener. Their rendition of In the Room was well worth the price of admission...#DarknessAndLight

Videos of the Week May 19th

Plenty of music and a few interesting cameos in this week's top five. Led by two funny and entertaining videos from Big Boi/Adam Levine and Train. Any time you've got Big Boi coming to retrieve his dry cleaning from a disorganized dry cleaning owner Adam Levine, hilarity will ensue. Similarly, any time you toss in cameos from comedians Ken Jeong, George Lopez, Jim Breuer with a Marshawn Lynch appearance, entertainment is on the way. If fiction is more your type, you'll enjoy the storytelling that accompanies Alan Walker's new futuristic video for Tired.

For a sprinkle of culture, how about some #feminism in the house? Needless to say, I'll be watching Wonder Woman's new movie when it comes out in theaters. And yes, she did get her own damn theme song thank you very much. Rounding out this week's top five is an emotional and well-constructed tribute to Paul Pierce. Having it narrated by Kendrick Lamar is about as perfect as it gets too. Tip of the cap to the Clippers for putting that together to commemorate such a legendary career...#ThankYou34

Videos of the Week December 30th

In perfect 2016 fashion, I'm ending this year on a completely random, somewhat entertaining, yet slightly disappointing way. While I wouldn't characterize any of the following videos as must see, they all cater to a specific music demographic. If you're a diehard, music OG who supports artists who consistently put on stellar live shows, then you'll enjoy Bon Iver's BK warehouse and Yasiin Bey (Mos Def)'s Fallon performances. As a side note, it was heartwarming that Mos gave the NY folks a proper goodbye at the Apollo last week. I'm bummed to see him hanging up his mic, but he'll always be one of my favorite multi-dimensional performers.

If you're the type of person who geeks out over typical Hip Hop videos stocked with full-lambo tricks and video girls, then you'll appreciate Travis $cott's new video for Biebs in the Trap. Side note - watching Travis surprise his family with a new house was pretty cool. Continuing on, if you're the type who loves getting up on that new video everyone is watching then I need to introduce you to Moshow. He's a rapper/cat enthusiast who released an awesome new video promoting washing and adopting cats. Can't make that stuff up, you just have to watch. Finally, looking forward to 2017, Movie Pilot put together a two and a half minute movie trailer montage for all the films you're looking forward to in 2017. If you're a cliff notes type of person, this one is perfect for you. Happy new year y'all...#Welcome2017

Videos of the Week December 16th

The underlying theme of this week's top five was performance. Whether it was an awe-inspiring solo acoustic performance in a cathedral from Lido, a shirtless rendition of Redbone from Childish Gambino on Fallon or seeing the behind the scenes details of deadmau5's new cube set design, there was plenty of raw talent on full display this week.

If you want a bit of à la carte, then seeing the new The Fate of the Furious trailer might be more your style. It's insane that the series got all the way to an eighth movie, but it's a credit to continually telling entertaining stories. Rounding out the top five is a dose of Hip Hop dance brought to you by Chris Brown. Clearly he, Usher and Gucci know how to party, but Usher and CB cutting a rug in the same video is not something you want to miss...#Party

Videos of the Week December 9th

This week's top five skewed toward music videos, but there were a few interesting debuts that deserved some love. This week started off on a high note with Jimmy Fallon debuting the new Nintendo Switch on his Tonight Show. Imagine how nerve wracking that must have been to play the game on live tv in front of the game's creator? After the type of pressure, it was fun to turn a page with Party Favor and Dillon Francis's revenge of the nerds montage with their Shut it Down video. If you take away one lesson, it's to not mess with nerds, they'll always find a way to get back.

Then came one of the most exciting trailers I've watched in a long time. The original Guardians of the Galaxy far exceeded my expectations, so seeing Baby Groot teeter on the atomic bomb launch button while being yelled at by Rocket did nothing but pour even more excitement for Vol 2. Then came the weird music videos, led by Childish Gambino's trippy VR video for Me and Your Mama. I'm still trying to wrap my head around whether or not attending the Pharos concert at Joshua Tree would have been a good move. Either way, I'm stoked that he's back to releasing new music. And finally, ending the week on an animation high note, Borgore and Juicy J released some equally trippy visuals for Magic Trick. It's hard to visually match the craziness of the beat for the song, but somehow they pulled it off in a kaleidoscope of color and craziness...#MagicTrick

Videos of the Week August 19th

There's a new breed of Hip Hop performers that are making a name for the genre on stage. If you're not picking up what I'm putting down then look no further than Chance the Rapper and Anderson .Paak's latest live performances. Chance took to GMA to show off his brand new single Summer Friends, while Anderson used every bit of space in the room for his tiny desk concert for NPR. Both artists are out to prove that Hip Hop music is fun to consume live and I'm digging every bit of their live shows.

Before we turn the page on Hip Hop, let's not forget about Logic's ode to everyone's favorite video game character. Everyone loves Mario and like you, I'd go ham if he brought him out on stage. If strange is what you're looking for, then look no further than Skrillex and Wiwek's new short movie for Still in the Cage. I'd at a loss for the whole plot line of that short flick, so I'm hoping you're in the mood for odd. And if you're missing out on aliens, then don't worry, Amy Adams is the translator you need. I'm stoked for Arrival and will be lining up at the box office when it comes out in November...#Arrival

Videos of the Week December 14

A bit of an EDM heavy top five this week with new videos from a couple formidable duos leading the way. First, you've got the tremendously weird quasi-animated Set Me Free video from Dillon Francis and Martin Garrix. Can't say I've ever seen anything like that or if it's a good or bad thing. For more of a down to earth display of music, Zedd and Selena have your back with their energetic performance of I Want You to Know at Jingle Ball. Rounding out the EDM vibe was The Chainsmokers Roses Uber edition. Couldn't have picked a more fun duo to set the tone for that type of activity.

In non-electronic new, there was a blast from my childhood with the Independence Day 2 trailer. Conspicuously missing was Will Smith, which takes the excitement down a few notches, but I'll remain cautiously optimistic until Rotten Tomatoes tells me whether it's worth seeing. And last, but far from least was Kygo's performance of Firestone at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. The sheer fact that Trop House made it to that type of award event is mind boggling. Kudos to Kygo for continuing to do amazing things...#Kygo

Videos of the Week December 5th

There's something for everyone in this week's top five. Leading off is Kendrick Lamar's hype performance of Alright on Austin City Limits. Say what you will about Compton's prince, but you can't knock his ability to own a stage. Speaking of owning a stage, Rozes and Drew did their thing on stage performing Roses on the Late Late Show. If you're wondering whether The Chainsmokers handle the backup vocals, I think that question was answered.

If lyric videos are your thing and you can prevent yourself from wilding out to rowdy trap music, then Doctor P and Far East Movement's video for Business should do the trick. My favorite video of the week is hands down the South Park style visuals for Ying Yang Twins, Mr. Collipark and Atom's Booty Bounce Pop. Never thought I'd be so entertained by animated booty popping. And last, but not least, we got a much clearer picture of what Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice will be about. Yes, there will be some Superman and Batman conflict, but eventually they have to band together with Wonder Woman to conquer the savage alien beast. I know, sounds awesome, right?...#BatmanvsSuperman

Videos of the Week September 4th

R&B is the recurring theme sprinkled throughout this week's top 5. Led by Majid Jordan and Drake's sultry duet My Love and Bieb's new one for What Do You Mean?, there was plenty of caressing and harmony at the top. If you were like many people and jumped on the T-Pain can't sing bandwagon, that wagon is starting to look more and more empty nowadays. Yes, Teddy Pain used the autotune to death, but that doesn't mean he isn't a talented vocalist. Feel free and watch his inspiring rendition of the national anthem if you don't know what I'm talking about.

In non-R&B news, the trailer for Concussion with Will Smith looks like an interesting upcoming film. Yes, it's a bummer that we learned how a lot of the plot was "shaped to the NFL's liking" thanks to the hacked Sony emails, but hopefully it will help continue to evolve the discussion around head injuries, especially in sports. Rounding out this week's top 5 is yet another trailer for an upcoming festival. TomorrowWorld's fairytale magic will be coming to Hotlanta later this month and you better believe the folks at GWDJ are more than a little excited about it...#TomorrowWorld

Videos of the Week August 7th

Slightly Hip Hop heavy week with a sizable dose of silly. Leading the silly wagon is without a doubt the trailer for Zoolander 2. In case you haven't already seen the trailer as a preview for another movie in theaters, it's about as goofy as you'd expect. From the eerie galactic lead in to the absolute lack of intelligence from Ben Stiller's character, it all works quite well. Following up on a similarly goofy note was the creatively spliced Doug Funnie Trap Queen video. If you're familiar enough with the lyrics, you'll be more than a little entertained by how much the animated visuals match up with the audio.

On the music video tip, Drake/The Game came through with their Compton inspired video for 100. Speaking of Compton inspired, Kendrick Lamar had the audacity to make a music video for an interlude on his latest album. Can't say I've seen that happen since the 1990s, so kudos to him for having the huevos and knack for entertainment with the visuals on For Free? Rounding out the week comes from UK's own Calvin Harris who felt the need to show us exactly how deep love can go. And no, it's not a big surprise that his gf's friend was cast for the video...of course she was...#HowDeepIsYourLove

Videos of the Week December 5th

Man, Jimmy Fallon takes a couple days off to welcome his second child into the world and all the sudden videos of the week shifts toward pop. I'll admit, it was a struggle finding anything funny this week. As a result, there's a whole lot of entertaining in this week's top five, but it's devoid of the normal Hip Hop and EDM influences.

Color me curious, but how entertaining will James Franco and Nicki Minaj be hosting SNL this week? Also, is it me or has Gwen Stefani become relevant again all of the sudden? I'll never forget her No Doubt days, but even now, she's been releasing some great music of late between Spark the Fire and Baby Don't Lie. It was great to hear some more soulful music for Aloe Blacc on Can You Do This? I'm a little biased since I'll be seeing Straight No Chaser in a few weeks, but I found their new claymation video with movie star Kristen Bell an interesting watch. Yes, the gist of the track is corny as hell, but what holiday song isn't a little cheesy? Finally, in order to maintain a little bit of sanity, I included the Electric Forest 2015 trailer. The festival proves that you can match literally any setting with psychedelic drugs EDM music, deem it a festival and everyone will flock to it...#ElectricForest

Videos of the Week March 7th

Definitely an entertainment centric top 5 videos of the week, but it's hard to argue against Batman and Transformers. Yes, Mark Wahlberg > Shia LaBoeuf, but just put Optimus Prime against a band of bad guy robots and I'm in. Aside from the awesome movies that are coming out, I'm also excited about the Monster Go DJ that araabMusik expertly demoed. Shoot, you might as well call it a baby MPC, which is wild considering how transportable it is.

In other news, Aloe Blacc finally created his own video for The Man. It'd been so overused by so many commercials that the real release is anti-climatic. The real surprise of the week came from the Game of Thrones...mixtape? What wait? Interesting move, but I can't complain one bit because Wale, Big Boi, and Common to name a few...#GameOfThronesMixtape

I'm gonna keep it 100 by saying that I'm in Austin, Texas right now, which means that I need to get out and enjoy a city I've been wanting to get to know for a while.
