Videos of the Week April 15th

This week was a special week in that it brought with it a clear candidate for video. Unsurprisingly, Lil Dicky was the mastermind behind the near 11 minute short movie that ended up being the crown jewel of this week's top five. I can't even really do justice trying to describe it, but I will warn that the first minute or so has a bit of nudity, so be mindful of the NSFW tag. Let's just say the video is a slow paced, non-linear train of thought style conversation that will take your imagination and sense of humor on a roller coaster of emotion. There's literally too much comedy gold in there, so feel free and reference the lyric Genius link as you watch.

On a whole different top four list, there was a slew of new music videos that were worthy of note. Let by Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar's haunting, CGI infused video for Goosebumps and Wale and G-Eazy's new spiffy visuals for Fashion week, Hip Hop ruled the roost on the music tip. An honorable mention goes to Major Lazer, Nicki Minaj, and PARTYNEXTDOOR for their house party with FaceTime themed video for Run Up. Closing out this week's top five was The Chainsmokers who made their SNL debut last weekend. Playing a small, quaint venue like Studio 8H isn't exactly what they're used to, but they found a way to deliver a solid performance. They won't be mistaken as rock stars stage presence wise, but Drew especially is coming into his own vocally, which is fun to watch. I for one am stoked to see them live in a few weeks when they come to Bill Graham. I'll see y'all there...#MemoriesDoNotOpen

"Will You Still Care in the Morning When the Magic's Gone?"

After a couple laps around The Chainsmokers new album, I think I'm ready to start declaring favorites. Unsurprisingly it's a track that I immediately gravitated toward due to Jhene Aiko's name being attached to it. Her distinct, sultry vocals have made many an appearance in this hood of the internet. On Wake Up, she plays the star role, alternating between verses and a repeatable hook. To their credit, Alex and Drew did their part to let Jhene shine while providing enough bounce on the beat to get listeners nodding along.

What really stuck with me, though, was the ending of the track. Since when did The Chainsmokers get into screwed and chopped beats?!?! Tip of the cap to Robert Davis and color me intrigued as hell that they'd mix that into their music. There's no doubt there will be a few more posts from Memories...Do Not Open before it's all said and done. At this point, you'd have to make a concerted effort to avoid hearing their new album with all the publicity they're getting these days. Over the past year they've attracted a lot of haters, but I'm proud of how far they've come and I hope they're finding ways to navigate their newfound fame...#MemoriesDoNotOpen

It was a fun week for videos with plenty of variety to keep things interesting. Led by the latest and greatest trailer for the upcoming Tupac movie. I usually cringe when Hollywood tries to tell the story of a music idol, but Straight Outta Compton was a step in the right direction. I'm hopeful All Eyez on Me ends up being of similar quality. Speaking of quality, how bout Steph Curry flexing those karaoke stills? I feel you on that Moana tip, I love everything about How Far I'll Go and will gladly sing it for an audience on demand. Keeping the feel good vibe going was Continuum's International rendition of The Chainsmokers/Coldplay's Something Just Like This. The world needs more coming together and collaboration, so tip of the cap for whoever put that together.

And just in case you thought I'd let a week go by without some comedy, step right on off. Leading that effort was deadmau5 who casually rick rolled his NYC audience as an April Fools joke. Was it me or were his fans singing along? Kudos for the true fans who went down with the ship on that practical joke. And finally, The Ringer decided to put Hannibal Burress and Vince Staples together in a room and have them judge whether certain NBA players were real enforcers or fake enforcers. Needless to say, there were some hot takes and plenty of jokes that may or may not throw Metta World Peace under the table...#NBAToughGuys

"Down and Down We Go, We'll Torch This Place We Know"

With about a week left before The Chainsmokers debut album drops, you'd think they'd be riding the wave of their latest single with Coldplay leading up to the release. More specifically, you've probably heard Something Like This playing into a commercial on an NCAA basketball tournament game or heard the candlelight version of Don't Let Me Down that was turned into an All-State commercial. For some that would be plenty of momentum, but today we got one last push in the form of The One.

To put things into context, their new one will serve as the lead off hitter on Memories...Do Not Open. Like most tracks that Alex and Drew put together, there's plenty of added meaning soaked into the lyrics. Similar to the way we all felt Drake's rise to fame in visceral way because of how transparent he lyrically in his music, The Chainsmokers pulled back the curtain a bit on this one in opening up about how they're having to constantly prioritize life's increasing demands. It's not an easy thing to empathize with since many of us couldn't even imagine the doors that have opened up in their life, but fame forces you to change in a lot of ways you may not have intended. I can say personally I appreciate that they still take the time to email over their new music and maintain a connection with people who have been down with them since the beginning.

The One may not end up being your favorite track on their album, but it will be one of mine because of it's authenticity and depth. It gets away from the upbeat catchy sound of the past singles and returns to a mellow vibe, characterized by a soft, mesmorizingly chill bassline. It's a good look that I'm considering icing on the cake as I continue to anxiously eye the other nine yet-to-be-released tracks that will arrive on April 7th...#MemoriesDoNotOpen

Despite not being as jam packed with excellence as previous weeks, there were a few gems in this week's top five thanks to our friends from across the pond. In case you missed it, which you probably did, The Brits were this week. Normally that wouldn't be of huge interest to folks in North America, but The Chainsmokers and Coldplay performed their new single live for the first time and Ed Sheeran debuted his upcoming remix of Shape of You with Stormzy. Both were as stellar as you'd hope for when hearing a track performed live for the first time.

Moving along with Migos performance of their latest viral hit Bad and Boujee on Ellen. Maybe I'm late to the party, but I'm having a tough time getting on board with Migos. Totally grateful for Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset delivering us the Dab a few years back, but I'm still not sure why they're a "thing." One talent I'll never second guess is Snoop Dogg. He could take years off, jump back into rapping like riding a bike. Like for example his latest collaboration with Adidas on Original is Never Finished. Hot af, you can't question he's still got it. And last, but maybe least, I'd be remiss if I didn't give some sort of heads up that the Oscars are coming this weekend. In preparation for that, the Screen Junkies put together quite the montage of Honest Trailers to make sure you're up to date on all the movies that are up for nomination. "Somebody I Can Kiss, I Want Something Just Like This"

A few months back, Alex and Drew promised a Coldplay collabo. Today that promise finally came to fruition with the release of Something Just Like This. Given the styles of both groups, there isn't anything you're going to be surprised by when you press play below. You're getting the stalwart vocals of Chris Martin over a mellow Chainsmokers build up and gentle drop. Sure, there's a few guitar riffs mixes in, which pushes the boundaries of what you'd normally get from The Chainsmokers, but it all leads to what you'd expect from both sides of the equation.

Impressive collaboration aside, I did a double take today when I learned that The Chainsmokers upcoming album, Memories Do Not Open, is going to be filled with completely new songs. All the singles leading up to the album were just that...they were singles. My knee jerk reaction to that was, "wow that's risky, how in the hell are they going to be able to do better than their most recent singles?" Hell, they've been doubted all the way to the top, so who am I to question whether they can do it. At this point I'm not dumb enough to bet that their win streak won't continue, so I'm going to stay optimistic as new gems like the one below slowly unearth themselves...#SomethingJustLikeThis

Man, I'm not sure what the deal is with 2017, but it's been one stellar week of videos after another. This week I legitimately had about 15 videos that I had to narrow down to a top five, which proved to be a thankless task. It was a tough decision, but if I didn't include Melissa McCarthy's latest SNL skit where she roasts Sean Spicer, I wouldn't be doing this list any justice. Maybe our political system is a bit messy right now, but it's creating such an onslaught of comedy gold that we've got more than enough to be distracted with. Similarly, I probably could have created an entire post dedicated to The Grammys, but instead I've been sprinkling the videos across posts this week. I particularly enjoyed Weeknd's performance of I Feel It Coming with Daft Punk, though.

In the world of regular videos, The Weeknd made sure to keep his name circulating with visuals for Reminder. In the video you may see Drake, Travis Scott, and A$AP Rocky partaking in the expensive cars and private jet with Abel. Must be nice to have so many friends in high places. In case you forgot about Alex and Drew for a minute, they got back in the limelight with their new video for Paris. Man they really meant that "if we go down, then we go down together" line because there was a lot of falling from heights in their new one. Luckily there was a soft landing, sort of like the couch in NxWorries performance of What More Can I Say on Fallon (see what I did there?). Who says you can't perform on stage in your jammies? I know Anderson .Paak doesn't care and neither should you...#NxWorries

"Let's Show Them We Are Better, We Were Staying in Paris"

It's gotten to the point that when The Chainsmokers release a new single, the music world quietly pauses their life and presses play. I don't need to give you the, "I'm so proud of how far they've come speech" because you've gotten that enough from me. What I want to focus on with the release of their new single Paris is their ability to continually grow without losing the stylistic elements of what got them to where they are now.

Paris is more of a quiet duet than a festival banger, but between Drew continuing to flex his vocal muscles with Emily Warren and the underlying Indie tone of the track, there's a lot to appreciate. While some will quickly move on to the next track and dismiss this one because it's not as "catchy", others will admire the depth and nostalgia behind the track. We all long to be places we aren't and Paris seems to capture that sentiment with dead on accuracy. 2017 may have just begun, but something tells me Alex and Drew aren't going to be falling back on their successes from last year. Not sure about y'all, but I'm looking forward to all that is on the horizon for The Chainsmokers...#Paris

Videos of the Week January 13th

Strange week for videos in that it was dominated by odd music videos and quirky cover performances. Leading off is marshmello's video for his new single Summer where he shares a moment with Vine star Lele Pons. It's hard to hate on any video at a skating rink, but the added eye candy is always appreciated. Then there was the over the top 80s and creepy video from The Weeknd for Party Monster. Put it this way, his videos make you think that there may be some things going on in his head that we find hard to imagine.

Moving on from music videos with an endearing Fresh Prince Theme cover from Ed Sheeran. His new music is downright dope, so I'll be tuning in to anything his name is attached to in the near future. Speaking of a Midas touch, The Chainsmokers felt the need to release a hype video to drum up some excitement for 2017. No disrespect, but I have a hard time imagining this being as successful as 2016 was. They've proven me wrong many times, though, so I guess nothing should surprise me at this point.

Just when you thought this was turning into a music only post, you knew I had to mix in some silly with Fallon. This time he was on stage with Kevin Bacon doing a word spelling parody of The Kinks 1970s hit Lola. Before you listen, I challenge you to think of as many words that rhyme with Lola. Let's just say they came up with a few more creative things to rhyme than the mental list you just came up with. Needless to say, I'm humming Lola now as I write this, so it'll stick with you...#Lola

Videos of the Week November 11th

Let's call this the OG edition of videos of the week. Led by what can only be described as a must-see interview between Kendrick Lamar and Rick Rubin that merges generations of Hip Hop, there is more than enough content to get your eyes glued to the screen for minutes on end. Thanks to GQ, they talked shop casually for all of us to watch for a full 50 minutes. If you're curious about the inner workings of what makes Kendrick tick, you'll enjoy it. Then, there was that time Grandmaster Flash took us all back to school to on Hip Hop and what it takes to be a Hip Hop DJ. He even took to the white board to explain the intricacies of the physics behind scratching a record and the shapes of needles and wafers for turntables. Another full 57 minute watch chalked full of Hip Hop history.

If getting schooled on Hip Hop isn't as interesting to you, then you might enjoy the lengths that The Chainsmokers went to create their new lyric video for Setting Fires. There were stunt doubles and lots of cardboard signs, which made it a fun watch. If talent is what you want, then you need to get to know Lido. He's a jack of all trades and he shows you exactly why by putting on an instrumental show for his Dye video. And last but not least, we've got some Jimmy Fallon roasting by the Seattle Seahawks. Evidently Marshon Lynch was licking his chops to get back at him and he delivered a pointed message at the end of the video. Always entertaining to see some back and forth to remind us all that the famous people who are frequently the butt of jokes are capable of dishing it out too...#ThankYouNotes

"I Keep Going On and On, Setting Fires to Keep You Warm"

In case you missed it, The Chainsmokers released a new five song Collage EP last week. I'd pause on calling the release newsworthy because it's basically a bundling of their previous four singles and one new song. Even though I may have cheapened the release by not characterizing it as newsworthy, it's worth mentioning that being able to purchase the likes of All We Know, Closer, Inside Out, and Don't Let Me Down on one EP is legendary. Those four songs represent some of their best work and are now to thank for them becoming a pop culture mainstay.

As far as the fifth song on the EP, Setting Fires will have a tough time sitting in the same room as the other four chart topping releases. With the help of XYLØ's vocals, there's plenty of repeatability in the mix to complement the bouncy, but mellow beat cooked up by Alex and Drew. It's not my favorite track they've done, but that's more of a testament to how high of a bar they've set now. Basically, if you've been living under a rock the past six months, do yourself a favor and give Collage a listen because its contents have been driving pop music of late...#Collage

I'll be honest I was pushed and pulled a lot of different directions this week when putting together this week's top five. I say that because this week ran the full gauntlet of emotions from playful to sad and serious to funny to whimsical and eventually landing on downright outlandish. Starting with The Chainsmokers new video for Closer with Halsey, we got to get another dose of on screen chemistry between Halsey and Drew. Really cool to see the guys portray such a nostalgic story through the video.

Then, the top five took a turn for the serious with Macklemore's gripping video for Drug Dealer. At this point we've all been touched at some point by the opioid epedemic in America, so it's about time we start shining the light on legal drug companies to highlight their contribution to the mess. Kudos for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for taking the issue head on. I included the Zeds Dead video because this week needed a dose of playful claymation to blend with the other vastly different moods. Different moods like silly when Fallon and Timberlake went back to Camp Winnipesaukee to sing everyone's favorite Alanis Morissette song. And to end on a completely outlandish note, I had to give my buddy John Bradford some love in the top five this week for his role in Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa's new Bossed Up video. For those wondering, he was the accountant who grabs the manila folder from Juicy J at the 19 second mark. It's the most odd, yet stereotypical rap video mixing corporate accountant team shenanigans and strip club scenes. Who knows how the concept came to be, but love to JB for doing his part as a straight edged accountant that gets quickly turnt up...#BossedUp

Videos of the Week October 14th

Live performances were the name of the game in this week's top five. Led by The Chainsmokers and Desiigner's 360 video from their recorded performance at Austin City Limits, the bar was set high from the start. It was set high, but Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals brought every ounce of funk the set of Ellen when performing Come Down. I'm still in awe of how he's solving the timeless problem of Hip Hop not being able to be translated into a live show. "You're damn right it can be and this is what it should look like," says Anderson. And even though it's probably more of a personal novelty to me, seeing Slushii, Skrillex, and Marshmello share the same decks on a B2B2B was a cool sight. I don't expect you to be interested enough to watch the hour long Shanghai set, but if you skip around you might just be as entertained as I was.

Then there was the trippy forest video for Frequency that Kid Cudi self-directed. It was about what I expected from Cudi, but music aside, I'm in total support of him tackling his demons head on and seeking help this week. It takes a real man to admit when he needs help and I'm extremely glad he reached out before doing any harm to himself. In case you missed it, here was his incredibly brave and transparent note about why he was choosing to seek help during a time when he's releasing an album. And in case the music wasn't entertaining enough, there was that time Kevin Hart and Jimmy Fallon made their way through NYC's scariest haunted house wearing GoPros. There's always something funny about seeing comedians get scared to death, even if it's staged...#WhatNow

"We've Fallen Apart, Still We're All Together"

Out of curiosity I went back to check when The Chainsmokers made their debut on this little-engine-that-could internet music destination. What I found was a remix to Say Lou Lou's song Julian back on May 25, 2013. Looking back, it's crazy to think that I was once *hopeful* they would be able to rise to success by making their own music rather than remixing other artists' tracks. There was something about how they were able to grab these "outlier" tracks that not many people had heard of and transform them into these stellar remixes. Having been a designer for years, I fully understand what kind of skill it takes to reinterpret someone else's work, yet make it your own by adding a unique twist that makes it work for whatever problem you're solving.

In my eyes, the problem they were solving all along was making EDM more accessible to people who traditionally enjoy vocal driven pop music. I know that's a bit of a broad generalization because they've made their fair share of uptempo party tracks, but now that they've gained a following, they're hitting the gas pedal by collaborating with artists they've always wanted to team up with to make the music they've always wanted to make. People who recently jumped on their bandwagon might be scratching their heads wondering why Alex and Drew are switching up their style. What they were doing was already working well, so what's up with their previous single (Closer) and their new one with Phoebe Ryan titled All We Know. If I were offering up advice to those new fans, I'd say go back and check out all the great vocalists that you may not have heard of that they've worked with or remixed. They consistently collaborate with great talent and could care less if you've heard of them because they know once you hear them over their production, it's going to be amazing. The fact that they're now starting to flex their writing/storytelling muscles and chip in original vocals speaks to the comfort level they're reaching as the duo who is defining pop music.

I don't need to tell you how awesome their new single is because you'll know it when you listen to it. The folk/acoustic vibe blends perfectly with the nostalgic storytelling adventure that Drew and Phoebe hold your hand through. It's one of those tracks whose lyrics are universally relatable, celebrating that one special bond we all share with someone that has survived the best and worst of times. All We Know is yet another continuation of the unstoppable amount of momentum that The Chainsmokers have right now. And we haven't even gotten to hear their collaboration with Chris Martin of Coldplay yet...#AllWeKnow

Variety is the name of the game in this week's top five. There was some music, a cross-genre cover, a lyric video, and a premiere of a much awaited show. Normally novelty and comedy lead the way, but this past week was the Drake and Beyonce show. Let me ask you this, how many time are you going to get to see Tyra Banks shove cheesecake in Drake's face and then douse him with red wine? And how many times are you going to see Beyonce's sexy self in a frilly dress taking a baseball bat to a chevy? Yep, that's why they led the way.

Then, there was that time Usher did a live cover of The Chainsmokers Don't Let Me Down. Didn't see that coming, but it speaks to how multi-talented Mr. Raymond is and how big The Chainsmokers are now. In an effort to keep up with the new trend of creative, lower budget videos, Kygo and Julia Michaels put together a fun video for Carry Me. Picture an in-studio performance with a live orchestra and lots of fun, whimsical lyrics painted on the screen narrating the entire thing. And then there's the premiere of Donald Glover's new show Atlanta. I've posted a few trailers for the show and now y'all get the full 26 minutes in all it's glory...#Atlanta

Videos of the Week September 2nd

Keeping it 100, this was one of the tougher weeks to narrow down a top five videos list. That was mostly there were so many stellar performances at MTV's Video Music Awards (VMAs). There were many more performances deserving to be posted like Rihanna and Ariana Grande's, but my personal favorites were The Chainsmokers/Halsey and Britney Spears/G-Eazy. Chalked full of sexual tension and energy, there were a lot of similarities between the two that made them an entertaining watch. Can we give it up for minute for Drew of The Chainsmokers for his effort as a vocalist? At this point, it's abundantly clear that there is little the duo can't accomplish.

In the land of real music videos, Lupe Fiasco was a clear standout with his video for Pick Up the Phone. The song was already powerful, but when you add visuals to it, the story gets even more vivid. Addiction is a terrible thing and the video shows exactly why it can be such a sad story. If you've been itching for some new Kygo, I don't have anything fresh to offer except that he's got a new clothing line called Kygo Life now. For the debut of the clothing line, he put on a fifteen minute, piano only concert where he weaved in and out of many of your favorite instrumentals from his new album. I almost list my sh*t when he led off with my personal favorite, Piano Jam. And rounding out the stacked top five was a really in-depth deconstruction of Kanye's vocals by Vox. As someone who loves the in-between the lines stuff, I ate up all nine minutes worth of that. Hate on him if you will, but there's plenty of craft to what he does...#Kanye

"We Ain't Never Gettin' Older"

At this point, it's becoming a forgone conclusion that any new Chainsmokers single will ascend to the top spot on iTunes charts. How far Alex and Drew have come from those guys who could make a great remix to now being in the drivers seat of contemporary EDM. Their new single featuring Halsey goes where no other Chainsmokers song has gone before. More specifically, Drew rocked out the vocals throughout the track. If you're late to get in on The Chainsmokers, they generally outsource talented vocalists for hooks and verses. Not this time, though.

Serious dap is in order for being ballsy enough to say "we got this" by handling everything from the beat to the songwriting to the vocals. Even though their personalities would have you 100% convinced they are perpetually the life of the party, nothing about their talent as a duo is a joke. They can make music and even though they're getting into the vocals now, they never disappoint when it comes with picking vocalists to collaborate with. As we go full steam ahead into Summer, it seems like music videos are beginning to take over the top five. Maybe it's an overall lack of interesting late night skits, or it could be an influx in breath taking performances and music videos. Speaking of performances, this week was absolutely dominated by Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar. You won't see many performances quite like their rendition of Freedom at the BET Awards. How they managed to include that much water on the set without electrocution is beyond amazing. So much splashing and wet hair swinging. Then you throw in some K Dot spitting on the mic. GAME OVER!

In the "all the other videos" category, there was plenty more music. Let by a throwback filtered Majid Jordan video for Make It Work and a very chill video from Gallant for Miyazaki. Who needs multiple camera angles when you've got a nicely set table and a bottle of wine, right? Then there was the silhouette inside the ice cube appearance by members of X Ambassadors, A$AP Ferg and Jamie N Commons in Low Life. Lots of pain and desperation in that one, but a great track. And last, but not least we've got the latest GWDJ appearance by The Chainsmokers. This time they performed their latest #1 single, Don't Let Me Down with Daya on GMA. Their live performance has come a long way to the point where they can captivate an audience no matter what venue they're performing at...#DontLetMeDown

Very entertaining week for videos with everyone's favorite staged, viral response to Beyonce's Lemonade video. Funny or Die is usually on point, but they brought their A game and flipped an hour long response quickly. When it came to music, Flo Rida/Jason Derulo and The Chainsmokers chipped in new visuals for their recent singles. I hate to call Hello Friday a typical Hip Hop video, but let's call a spade a spade. As far as Don't Let Me Down is concerned, the plot is a bit perplexing. You've got a group of women dancing and pouring their heart out vocally and Alex and Drew are...bouncing in '64 like they're riding down Crenshaw? Other than the play on words on not letting them down from the bouncing, not sure what they were going with theme wise.

In non-music news, Drake did an hour long piece with Zane Lowe following the release of Views. Jury is still out on the album for me, but overall I'm feeling the more low key, back to more of an R&B/Hip Hop mix vibe. And last but not least, we've got a brand new game on Fallon. It's called Frozen Blackjack and Fallon took on Captain America in the game. Let's just say, it was entertaining...#FrozenBlackjack

"I'm Gonna Love You Inside Out"

Looking back, I remember the days when we used to yearn for original tracks from The Chainsmokers. They were so good at re-imagining tracks that you may not have heard of into stellar remixes. Now that they're ten plus original singles deep, questioning whether they could carve out their own style sounds outlandish. Sure, Roses going double platinum definitely helped solidify their place in EDM's elite, but their steady stream of great new singles speaks to their staying power.

Their latest creation, Inside Out, is yet another destined for mainstream success. Featuring the vocals of Charlee, it fits the model of a ballad disguised in EDM form. The sappy vocals will lure you in, but the calming excitement post drop is what people will remember. Time will tell whether or not it has the ceiling of Roses, but there's no doubt that this is another huge step in the right direction from everyone's favorite lovable duo...#InsideOut
