That Time Marshmello Graduated With Skrillex & Slushii

Only in a made up, happy Zelda music world can we all collectively imagine three EDM bosses like marshmello, Skrillex, and Slushii graduating from high school together. Moving On is a shameless nostalgia play using moving onto college as an apropos analogy that fits in nicely with the vibe of the track. It might be the most play dough soft EDM imaginable, but damn is it easy to listen to. Everything from the heavy bounce to the video game synths aligns perfectly with everything we've heard thus far from mello. Consider it a nice light snack with added novelty if you're in the market for a new motivational anthem...#MovingOn

Slushii Goes In On Ariana's Side To Side

Last night it was Mat Kearney sounding identical to Chris Martin. Tonight, you'd be hard pressed convincing me the remix below wasn't created by marshmello. It's no secret that Slushii and marshmello have a knack for turning vocal samples into high pitched chord progressions, but this one in particular could have been a coin flip as to who created it. Like me, you're probably just as sick of Ariana's original version of Side to Side, so hearing a completely different take on it wasn't the worse thing in the world.

It's a solid remix, but I'll admit, it's not quite as exciting as hearing the teaser to Slushii's new collabo with Tiesto. Sure, it's a 10 sec clip, but there's no denying it goes hard. You know the drill, iTunes or Spotify if you've pressed play below more than once...#SideToSide

Videos of the Week October 14th

Live performances were the name of the game in this week's top five. Led by The Chainsmokers and Desiigner's 360 video from their recorded performance at Austin City Limits, the bar was set high from the start. It was set high, but Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals brought every ounce of funk the set of Ellen when performing Come Down. I'm still in awe of how he's solving the timeless problem of Hip Hop not being able to be translated into a live show. "You're damn right it can be and this is what it should look like," says Anderson. And even though it's probably more of a personal novelty to me, seeing Slushii, Skrillex, and Marshmello share the same decks on a B2B2B was a cool sight. I don't expect you to be interested enough to watch the hour long Shanghai set, but if you skip around you might just be as entertained as I was.

Then there was the trippy forest video for Frequency that Kid Cudi self-directed. It was about what I expected from Cudi, but music aside, I'm in total support of him tackling his demons head on and seeking help this week. It takes a real man to admit when he needs help and I'm extremely glad he reached out before doing any harm to himself. In case you missed it, here was his incredibly brave and transparent note about why he was choosing to seek help during a time when he's releasing an album. And in case the music wasn't entertaining enough, there was that time Kevin Hart and Jimmy Fallon made their way through NYC's scariest haunted house wearing GoPros. There's always something funny about seeing comedians get scared to death, even if it's staged...#WhatNow

Slushii Will Make You Feel Good on Easter Sunday

First and foremost, Happy Easter to you and yours from the GWDJ crew! Seeing that Spring has now sprung and today is a holiday for some folks, it seems only fitting Slushii blessed us with a bouncy new beat to indulge in. In many ways, Slushii and marshmello are cornering the market in boisterous, upbeat electronic music. Everything from the high pitched samples, to the energetic synths, to the bubbly, cartoony cover art. It's rainbows and butterflys on speed when they get behind the decks.

Make Me Feel is every bit as energetic as you'd hope for a track released on Easter. There's a mellow ebb and flow between drops, but don't get it twisted, there's plenty of getting after it post-drop. It's happiness manifested into a full four minutes of smiling and wildin' out. Feel free and grab a free copy of this over here while you break bread with friends and family over Easter eggs this evening...#MakeMeFeel

Marshmello & Slushii Wanted You 2 Have a Happy V-day

Sticking with the Valentines Day love for just one more day since there was so much love in the music world yesterday. It was near impossible topping Macklemore's stellar effort on Spoons, but since I'm partial to EDM, I feel the need to not entirely skip of Marshmello and Slushii's electronic slow jam version of WaNt U 2. If you're confused about the phrase electronic slow jam, that makes two of us because as I typed it I was thinking to myself "wtf is an electronic slow jam."

Well, I'll put it this way, I've never heard a slower, more exaggerated drop than what I witnessed below on the VIP edit. I haven't listened to much Slushii, but the high pitched sample and overall happy tone has Marshmello's style written all over it. It's the first time I've thought to myself, if a 90s slow jam were to made of entirely synths, this is what it would sound like. There's a nice, bouncy tempo leading up to the drop, but the drawn out, sappiness of the drop is somethin' special. It's a rare remix where I'm finding myself liking it more than the original version. In a an electronic world where it's becoming harder and harder to be different, this one sure threw more for a loop that I actually kind of like in a weird way...#WaNtU2
