Videos of the Week April 15th

This week was a special week in that it brought with it a clear candidate for video. Unsurprisingly, Lil Dicky was the mastermind behind the near 11 minute short movie that ended up being the crown jewel of this week's top five. I can't even really do justice trying to describe it, but I will warn that the first minute or so has a bit of nudity, so be mindful of the NSFW tag. Let's just say the video is a slow paced, non-linear train of thought style conversation that will take your imagination and sense of humor on a roller coaster of emotion. There's literally too much comedy gold in there, so feel free and reference the lyric Genius link as you watch.

On a whole different top four list, there was a slew of new music videos that were worthy of note. Let by Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar's haunting, CGI infused video for Goosebumps and Wale and G-Eazy's new spiffy visuals for Fashion week, Hip Hop ruled the roost on the music tip. An honorable mention goes to Major Lazer, Nicki Minaj, and PARTYNEXTDOOR for their house party with FaceTime themed video for Run Up. Closing out this week's top five was The Chainsmokers who made their SNL debut last weekend. Playing a small, quaint venue like Studio 8H isn't exactly what they're used to, but they found a way to deliver a solid performance. They won't be mistaken as rock stars stage presence wise, but Drew especially is coming into his own vocally, which is fun to watch. I for one am stoked to see them live in a few weeks when they come to Bill Graham. I'll see y'all there...#MemoriesDoNotOpen

"I Told Him Pull Up On Me, Fasta Than Danica"

Well...it looks like Major Lazer is taking no prisoners with their onslaught on pop music. Truth be told, their off-the wall, trappy tribal music is what I like most, but I can appreciate their forays into the radio friendly variety. Their new one with PARTYNEXTDOOR and Nicki Minaj isn't quite on the level of Cold Water in terms of replay-ability, but it's catchy enough. If I were to offer one critique, I'd say the hook runs the risk of being overly repetitive, but that's probably what makes it successful.

Another unsurprising, par for the course move for Major Lazer was their lyric video for the song below. Their uses of vibrant color and playful typography is always on point and fun to watch. Make sure and check that out below or iTunes and Spotify for all you hoarders...#RunUp

Videos of the Week June 24th

It was a very rare week where actual music videos dominated this week's top five. Led by the visuals from twenty one pilots' new track off the Suicide Squad Soundtrack and PARTYNEXTDOOR's slow jam Come and See Me, the music touched a wide variety of genres. Those two videos were cool, but my favorite music video was by far What So Not and George Maple's Buried. The slow motion action mixed with the melodic trap was an awesome combo.

In the land of non-traditional videos, Anderson .Paak showed everyone who he's the toast of 2016's XXL Freshman class. Such a charismatic dude with an abundance of talent oozing from his pores. And last but most definitely not least, we all got a firsthand look at how awesome of a vocalist Josef Salvat is. Led by some ivory tickling from Gryffin, the in-studio acoustic rendition of Heading Home gets the nod for top video this week...#HeadingHome

"All She Hit Me With is Come and See Me For Once"

A new slow jam from PARTYNEXTDOOR and Drake, eh? Evidently the whole OVO crew did a number on the Converse Fader Fort showcase this past week. Consider the momentum continued with Come and See Me. The production has 40's fingerprints all over it, reminding me a lot of my favorite Drake tracks. There's plenty of heartfelt, mellow vibes in the mix, making it a perfect late night track to cool out to. Imagine for a second...a lonely night coming home from the bar empty handed and listening to this before you make the fateful decision of pouring one last Johnny Walker neat to put you over the top. It's that type of pondering life and relationships that a song like this will bring to the forefront. It's tracks like this that I will always be able to vibe with because it reminds me of struggles in the past. The happiness wouldn't exist without something to compare it to, so don't feel bad when you're singing along because I sure didn't...#ComeAndSeeMe

"Who Am I Gonna Be When It's All Over?"

If you can't beat 'em, at least beat 'em to the punch. In response to Drake's latest song How Bout Now being leaked to the world without permission, he released two more new songs via OVO yesterday. Whatever medium the initial leak came from, it evidently had the two other songs on it, so in Drizzy's eye they were as good as leaked...

Out of the two tracks, I'm giving the nod to Heat of the Moment over 6 God. I'll concede that the beat on 6 God is on point, but I'm a sucker for a Drake ballad. All three tracks were on the chopping block for Nothing Was the Same and what better way to start gaining some momentum for Views From the 6 than releasing them as promo singles? Good decision all around, feel free to download all of them at your leisure and don't forget to send Drake a tweet both thanking him and wising him a belated Happy Birthday...#ViewsFromThe6
