Videos of the Week Novmeber 3rd

Lots and lots of fun live performances in this week's top five. Leading the way in that category was Odesza who put together a stunning rendition of Line of Sight. Having recently seen them live, I appreciate how they adapted their amphitheater sound to a more intimate setting. Keeping with the late night vibe, Maroon 5 and SZA delivered a fun rendition of What Lovers Do on Fallon. I'll admit I haven't seen much of SZA, so to see her sing live gave me a better feel for massive ceiling as a vocalist. Rounding out the late night trio was Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) of Stranger Things spitting a fiery summary of season one. Having now plowed through the first two seasons, it was enlightening to see the more authentic, raw side of young Eleven.

Pivoting off late night slightly with The Roots in a slightly different context than usual on Fallon. If you've ever seen them perform classroom style on Fallon, then you won't be surprised at how well they handled the space constraints on Tiny Desk. And last, but always the best is a second episode from Odesza's A Moment Apart Tour. I've said it many times, but if you're a fan of electronic music and wish there was more authentic instrumentation mixed with the synthesizers, then Odesza is your answer...#AMomentApart

Videos of the Week October 6th

It was an odd week for videos, which reflected a tumultuous week in the U.S. Words can't adequately communicate the amount of loss and despair we all felt when the details started to emerge surrounding the Las Vegas shooting. The fact that it was at a music festival was even more harrowing for those of us who frequently attend those large scale events. Personally, I've grown accustomed to turning to music when everything else in the world doesn't make sense, so hopefully this abbreviated list of videos somehow provide the escapism you're looking for if you feel the same week.

All that being said, it would be hard to find a more appropriate video than Miley Cyrus and Adam Sandler's performance of No Freedom shortly after news of the shooting broke. The tone of the track seemed to strike just the right chord for me and while I don't normally listen to country, I felt the need to be a little more open minded this week. If you came to this post looking for some actual music videos, both Fergie and Wu-Tang have you covered. Fergie's Love is Blind may not be the most appropriate video given this week's events, but the use of dolls carrying out the plot saved me from taking it too seriously. It's been a while since Wu-Tang got together and seeing them with Redman added even more nostalgia to their new video for People Say. If you need a bit of humor to get you back on the brighter side of life, the latest rendition of Celebrity Mean Tweets might do the trick. And if you're really looking for a mix of pop culture and great music, Jay Zv covered all those bases with his SNL performance. Donning a Kaepernick jersey, he started the latest season of SNL off with bang by performances of Bam and 4:44. Here's to hoping Colin finds his way into the NFL at some point this year...#FreeKaepernick

Videos of the Week August 18th

Complete and udder randomness is what you can expect in this week's top five. Led by Gorillaz new augmented reality club video for Strobelite, the bar for creativity was set high from the start. But then it was quickly surpassed by Snapchat's new awe-inspiring Crowd Surf feature that debuted at Outside Lands last weekend. Basically through timestamps and such, they're able to splice together a whole lot of video and audio to create a seamless audio experience as the perspectives switch on the stories that are pieced together. It may seem like a small thing, but jumping from cut to cut of the same song is not a fun listen. Kudos to Snapchat for pioneering and Lorde for debuting.

Continuing the quirky, out of left field videos with Logic's animated cameo on the latest Rick and Morty episode. Definitely willing to cop to never having watched an episode before his cameo, but now I'm intrigued. Oh and did you ever wonder which of the Seven Dwarves Snoop wanted to punch in the face? Or how Snoop remembers passwords despite being high all the time? Well, luckily Jimmy Kimmel got some quality one-on-one with the Dogfather to ask him. And last, but one of the greatest closing videos of the week, we have the Kyrie and LeBron saga played to the tune of Eminem's Stan. The way it's able to creatively cut through the tension of the situation using Em's template is exemplary. Shout of to AOK for throwing that together. If you're at all familiar with the situation, you're going to be more than a little entertained by it...#Stan

Videos of the Week June 2nd

What better way to welcome the summer months than a top five chalked full of Hip Hop goodness. Led by Kendrick Lamar and his flying car, Perfect Pint was the lead off hitter this week needed. I can't speak to the random animals, unicorns, or super-imposed Gucci Mane in the video, but it made for a chaotic watch. If a much more chill, SoCal Hip Hop video is more up your alley, then Mura Masa and Desiigner have your back. Let's just say Desiigner has never been accused of a lack of energy and that was evident in the video. If you're a Nike fan, then you can move right past Travis Scott's new Way Back video because it's one big James Harden Addidas commercial. Can't hate on the cross culture collabo between Hip Hop and NBA talents, but it comes off a bit too opportunistic for my liking. Speaking of opportunistic, how about Lil Yachty making a fashion splash in his first TV performance. Do the words Lloyd Christmas mean anything to you? Suffice to say, he pulled it off like a champ.

And in case you're not into Hip Hop videos, rounding out the top five is a trailer for the new four part HBO documentary detailing the come up of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. It'll have cameos from the likes of Snoop, Will.i.am, and Eminem cameos, the series will have all the big names you'd hope would help tell the story. The Defiant Ones will premiere on July 9th, so set your DVRs y'all...#DefiantOnes

Videos of the Week May 5th

This week's top five was unique in that it starts and ends with Jimmy Kimmel's monologue about the birth of his newborn son. If you don't get at least a little choked up over hearing the sadness in his voice over feeling helpless about the situation as a whole, then you need to check yourself. His story aside, I appreciated his story and how it directly relates the the healthcare bills that are being mulled over by the House this week. Let's just hope the listened and make the right decision, ultimately.

Aside from Kimmel's impactful story, there were a few videos in Hip Hop that had the internet collective pressing play over and over again. J Cole's 4 Your Eyez Only documentary was previously released via other outlets like HBO, but this week it got put on YouTube for consumption from the masses. The word real comes to mind when watching him go to the various cities in the South and hear stories from the people trying to make it through the day-to-day. Watching the documentary and then transitioning to DJ Khaled's star studded video for I'm the One was about as stark of a difference as you'll get in VOTW. Needless to say, everything about it was tried and true Hip Hop from the video girls to the pool parties to the immaculately trimmed hedges.

Making sure EDM got their contribution for the week was Gryffin and Illenium's Feel Good. The video is cool and all, but that candlelight version that features Daya's stunning vocals is officially where it's at. Speaking of where it's at, it wouldn't be a complete week without at least a few shennanigans. This time it came from Fallon's crew who put together a minute long mash up of Star Wars characters singing Smash Mouth's classic, All Star. It's kitchy, but it delivers the entertainment value you'd expect from a novelty like that...#AllStarWars

Videos of the Week March 3rd

Since we're still knee deep in award season, you're getting a large dose of live performances again this week. Kicking off the week was the cast of The Voice coming together to collaborate on a TLC Waterfalls cover. I was a bit surprised by the folk/country vibe of the track, but given the odd-pairing of pop styles coming together, it makes more sense the more I think about it. Needless to say, no shortage of vocal talent on that cover.

If music videos are what you're after, you'll enjoy Gallant's new video for Talking to Myself. Anything that man touches turns sexy, believe that. If you're starting to get stoked for summer movie season, then the newest Guardians of the Galaxy trailer surely took those expectations a notch higher. Such awesome personality on all those characters, can't wait for the new one to come out.

And then we've got the Oscars. It was tempting to post the confusing ending of the award show, but you've probably already seen it by now and it's kind of a train wreck watch. In turn, I decided to post my favorite moment and performance. By far my favorite performance was Lin-Manuel Miranda and Auli'l Cravahlo's performance of How Far I'll Go from Moana. If you've seen the movie, you got goosebumps watching that. And finally, my favorite moment of then night when an unsuspecting bus full of tourists became the entertainment for everyone. There's so much comedy goodness baked into that clip that it wouldn't be right for me to try and summarize it, just watch it...#Yulree

Videos of the Week September 23rd

Normally I'm a Jimmy Fallon guy, but kudos to Jimmy Kimmel for bringing the heat this week with performances from Usher and Desiigner. Both brought the heat with brief sets and they did it their own way. On one hand you had Usher doing his usual dance routine while spicing it up with videos of fans around the world dancing to No Limit. And on the other hand you had the raw energy of Desiigner performing his hype new single Timmy Turner. To be blunt, I'm still on the fence about Desiigner as an artist. He walks the line between hype and over-the-top, which is why I want to like him, but in manageable doses.

If you have five minutes and have to choose one video to watch this week, there's no doubt that it should be Elton John and Gallant performing Weight in Gold. It's an awe inspiring performance by a legend and an up-and-comer whose voice is on another level. If escaping reality through animation and adventure is more what you're looking for, then you'll dig Zeds Dead, Diplo and Elliphant's collabo on the video for Blame. And last, but not least, there was the time Hillary Clinton went Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis. If you've seen any of the episodes in the series, there's a level of awkward situational humor that always ends up being surprisingly funny and this one did not disappoint...#BetweenTwoFerns

Videos of the Week March 4th

Bit a down week for videos to kick off March, but that's to be expected with the ridiculous amount of award shows lately. That being said, there were so undeniably powerful videos this week, led by Lady Gaga's performance of 'Til It Happens to You. The fact that relatives of hers found out that she was a victim of sexual assault as a result of her performance speaks to how difficult it can be to open up about such traumatic events. Needless to say, there wasn't a dry eye in the audience as it hit everyone directly in the feels.

In the world of actual music videos, Jack U released some adventurous footage of their travels across the world on Mind. We also got a nostalgic snack seeing old footage of 2pac in the studio recording MC Hammer a reference track. The world may not fully appreciate how great of a producer he was too. In the world of late night, Kimmel found a way to sneak into a Batman vs Superman scene, which was more than a little funny. And last, but definitely not least, the video that needs no introduction. If you were living under a rock and didn't see John Oliver's complete evisceration of Donald Trump then please set aside 20 minutes of your time to watch. We all fear what could happen when election time comes up next year, but I am proud that there are people out there who aren't afraid of being sued and will willingly do their best to expose him...#MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain

Videos of the Week February 19th

You'd be hard pressed to find a more stacked week for videos. Truth be told, it was hard narrowing down the ten or so videos that were in the running for the top five. Between the Grammy performances and Kanye performing on SNL, there was a lot of content to pick from. In my opinion, the Kendrick Lamar and Justin Bieber/Jack U performances were the most memorable, but I'd give Lady Gaga's David Bowie tribute a solid honorable mention. And as far as Kanye goes, I don't really have word for Ultra Light Beams. It's dramatic, it's emotional and it's everything you'd expect in a Kanye performance.

In the land of non-live performances, Flume came through with some trippy and emotional visuals for his new single Never Be Like You. Love everything about the slow trap movement, which includes slow bangers like that one. And for some a humorous ending to the week, there's the third incarnation of musician Mean Tweets from the Kimmel Show. My favorite digs were on Ed Sheeran, Common and of course the creative Mumford jab in the end was worthy of mentioning...#MeanTweets

Videos of the Week October 23rd

This week's top five was centered around actual music videos for change. Leading the way was a lot of music touched by Skrillex. His new one with Dillon Francis was as jittery and trappy as you'd expect from the duo. In somewhat of a surprise, he also came to the rescue of Justin Bieber by setting the tone on Sorry. Man, you better get used to hearing that track because it's going to be lighting up top 40 radio for the foreseeable future.

For you Hip Hop heads out there, Logic is still dropping weekly videos to cover his recent hits. The kid can spit, there's no getting around that. If you're up for a little nostalgia, then you'll appreciate Hov bringing back a classic on Kimmel this week. Sure the track isn't the same without Alicia's vocals live, but Jiggaman has enough stage presence to carry a concert. And last, but certainly not least, the most meemed video of the past week, Drake's video for Hotline Bling. If you're one of those who love to poke fun at his expressive expressions, this one made your entire year...#HotlineBling

Videos of the Week June 5th

The top 5 this week featured a large dose of EDM, an interesting cover and a whole lot of silliness. Leading the way was Ed Sheeran's cover of Fetty Wap's Trap Queen that completely came out of left field. Who would have known such a bouncy track could hold up acoustically? On the EDM tip Eric Prydz came through with some crazy visuals with the help of Tron producer GMUNK and his 3D LED sugar cube. Crookers and Jeremih also concocted an interesting story to their latest single I Just Can't.

As fas as shenanigans, the Late Night hosts were all over that. Led by Fallon and Jason Statham's game of slap jack and the always funny mean tweets from Kimmel, there was plenty to laugh at. Some of those mean tweets took the gloves off man! The tweets are funny and all, but the reactions are why you keep watching...#NBAMeanTweets

Videos of the Week March 20th

With SXSW being the talk of the town this week and hearing stories about how Snoop and Willie Nelson ate KFC in Amsterdam together, it's only fitting the lead off video of the week has to do with Jimmy Kimmel trolling attendees of the legendary festival. It's a little unnerving how quickly people are to pretend to know what they're talking about when it comes to music. My favorite was DJ Gluten and how his music is hard to tolerate...love it!

For the weekly Fallon spot, Ben Stiller made a quick cameo to do some really entertaining impromptu role playing. On them music front, it's getting a little ridiculous how great lyric videos are becoming. Case in point both Martin Garrix and David Guetta's latest videos for their new singles. One took the more cartoony route, the other took a more literal, real life entertainment angle. It makes you wonder if real videos are even worth it these days? Finally, rounding out the top 5 is a behind the scenes look at Ed Sheeran's tour. Yes, you read that right, he does in fact sing to cats around the four minute mark. I'm starting to think going on a worldwide tour should be on my bucket list...#Sheeran

Videos of the Week February 6th

In a week dominated by historically awesome late night spots, it was a challenge trying to fit actual music into videos of the week. Let me take that back actually, Will Smith and Jimmy Fallon were every bit as musical as Rihanna and Kanye. The only difference was Big Willy and Fallon were using an iPad beatbox app and RiRi and Yeezy were relying on Paul McCartney for the beat.

While Fallon gets most of the late night love, Kimmel's celebrities reading mean tweets about themselves is about as entertaining as it gets. Between Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande and Psy, it was really tough finding a favorite among the hilarity. In an effort to inject some musical quality to the post, Sam Smith came through at the right time with visuals for one of my favorites of his, Lay Me Down. Last, but certainly not least, the Saved by the Bell reunion was a slight of nostalgia that anyone born in the 1980s thoroughly appreciated. It is crazy how well all of them look exactly the same twenty years later...well...minus Mr. Belding...#SavedByTheBell

Videos of the Week January 16th

Eclectic week for videos with Fallon and Gwyneth leading the way on Broadway versions of Hip Hop hits. I really don't know how Jimmy keeps doing it, but he has an uncanny ability to get celebrities to play unfamiliar roles in really entertaining ways. Right behind the clear top video is deadmau5's Spirit of Gumball documentary. It's interesting bioptic on featuring the always entertaining deadmau5. Yea, it's a safe bet that you're going to hear some great music mixed throughout the exotic card racing on the sixteen minute documentary.

In other news, Childish Gambino and Run the Jewels were the talk of the town when it came to late night. For those of you keeping score at home, Donald Glover took over Kimmel, while RTJ took over Conan. So many late night options these days it's becoming hard to track. Rounding out the top 5 is the Mikey Posner assisted video for Sugar by Maroon 5. Ever wondered what wedding crashing is really like? Well press play and watch Adam Levine go to work...#Sugar

Videos of the Week June 20th

This week brought a little bit of funny, a little bit of entertainment, and a dash on nostalgia. The funny came from Ice Cube's angry serious messages on Kimmel and some hilarious Harry Potter trivia on Fallon. The entertainment came from the sheer jubilation of Coldplay's Sky Full of Stars video where they took over the streets of Sydney, Australia and the X Ambassadors/Jamie N Commons video for their white hot track Jungle. Finishing up on a nostalgic note was the montage of Michael Jackson clips that were put together for his latest posthumous single Love Never Felt So Good. So much classic, much dance moves, always going to miss the King of Pop...#LoveNeverFeltSoGood

Videos of the Week April 11th

Solid mix of real videos and late night appearances on this week's list of top five videos. Leading the way is Avicii's animated video for his own remix of Hey Brother that features clips from the show Bravest Warriors. I can't say I've seen the cartoon, but it seems like it has a cult following based on some of the video comments on YouTube.

Also on the docket this week was the whole video of Foxes Holding Onto Heaven, which was a long time coming. Best comedic spot of the week came from Drake who dressed in disguise to interview people on the streets about himself. The questions could have been more provocative and answers more entertaining, but there were a couple of pretty hilarious interactions. Putting a nice bow on the week was Sam Smith's characteristically on point rendition of Money on My Mind on Jimmy Kimmel. There are very few artists who have the ability to captivate an audience and turn listeners collectively into deer looking at headlights like Sam Smith. He's still my pick for breakthrough artist of 2014...#InTheLonelyHour

Videos of the Week October 18th

Without a doubt the most eye opening video this week was the odd collaboration between James Blake and Chance the Rapper. The core of that statement has to do with the never-ending intrigue I have with cross-genre collaborations that mix two drastically different styles. It seems like Indie goes with everything these days, but the Life Round Here (Remix) struck me as somewhere beyond awesome and just short of epic.

It seems like I get a weekly reminder that I should have been in Philly for the Made in America Festival. This week's reminder came in the form of the trailer that successfully captured what I expect was the unbridled energy that the show created. Aside from those two big highlights, Bruno comes through with creative videos and Sleigh Bells has absolutely mastered the ability to rock a party. Because it was a slow week, I resurrected a favorite from the vault. If the final video doesn't somehow improve your day, you are way too left-brained and simply need to play more...#MorePlay

Videos of the Week August 9th

Great week for videos with Jay Z leading the way with his "performance art film" of Picasso Baby. Despite the fact that he's ruffling feathers with every new things he does, I respect his visionary approach to Magna Carta Holy Grail. When you have the resources to do it, why not try things that nobody else has done before?

Oh, and in case you aren't tired of Miley's twerking ways, she played a starring role in Big Sean's new video. I probably would have given large amounts of money to be at either OVO Fest or TNGHT/Disclousure's Central Park concert. Maybe it was a coincidence that both took place in the same week, but jealous was running high this week...#GreatConcert

I gotta admit, I'm starting to be won over by Fall Out Boy's recent comeback effort. There's no denying that their new music is full of energy and chalked with the vigor of their early albums. Other than that, Jimmy Kimmel had some great Hip Hop acts on his show over the past week and for some strange reason I was really entertained by Skrillex kickin' it with random impoverished Dominican kids. I'm not sure whether he stands out more as a member of A$AP Rocky's posse or as a visitor of the Dominican slums. It was still cool to see Skrillex in his element in the booth toward the end of the video...#WildForTheNight

Videos of the Week

When watching @iamwill's new video for T.H.E., the only though that crossed my mind was that's about right. I wouldn't expect anything less than interstellar, Michael Jackson-esque, Scream type, CGI driven madness. The only thing I'm in complete awe about is what jboymoo said about him on iTunes (below):
Saying Will I Am is a great rapper would have been debatable ten years ago, not today. Now he's more international pop star, let's try and keep his pop star persona from the association of the word rapper, k?

As a sidebar, it's pretty cool seeing all of the behind the scenes footage of Kanye and Jay's Watch the Throne tour. Other than the fact that they play N words in Paris a record 10 times in one concert (not joking), it seems to be the most highly sought after concert ticket. I'll be the first to admit, I was very lukewarm on their album initially, but lately I've found myself going back to it and liking it better the more I listen to it. Some things are just too intense and shoved down our throat and over-hyped that it borders on too cliche to even say nice things about. Now that the dust has settled, I'm more than happy to say should be in the conversation for album of the year...#NotTheBestThough
