Flume's Skin Gets Yet Another Addition

Is it me or does it seem like Flume has released like ten versions of his latest album, Skin? First it was the original album, following by the first companion EP, then the second companion EP, then a remix EP, and now a final extra track that looks like it's part of the second companion EP, but not really.

It may sound like I'm complaining, but there's no real downside to getting more new music from one of the standout DJs in EDM right now. What you can expect on Hyperreal is an upbeat House vibe with just enough quirkiness that it sounds like something Flume would put out. Kucka's light, airy vocals mesh well over the smooth, rolling bassline. I would go as far to say it's in my top five favorite tracks in the Skin collection, but it's a chill track that's more than worthy of a few listens...#Hyperreal

Baauer Goes Double Time on a Flume Favorite

The beauty about Baauer's experimental style is that it always keeps you on your toes. One song he may be clanging pans together, while other's he may be out in nature recording obscure live nature sounds. It's truly a mystery box any time we get the opportunity to unwrap one of his creations.

Like for example, he tribal remix of Flume and Kucka's Numb and Getting Colder. Below is the original for reference...

The original was quiet, dramatic, and methodical, but Baauer's remix took a decidedly different course. Instead, the measured pace went double time, producing a Dancehall quality, booty shake anthem. It's not quiet as heavy as a lot of his other creations, but man is it a fun dance track. You have 100% permission to wild out and twerk to this new #banger.

Videos of the Week December 2nd

There wasn't really any rhyme or reason to this week's top five, so without further organization, here goes. Leading the way are visuals from everyone's favorite radio hit from DJ Snake and Bieber. Sure, Let Me Love You is catch af, but something tells me you might see an even better version of the track posted on here tomorrow (#foreshadowing). Moving along, someone finally managed to corner The Weeknd in a studio long enough for an interview. Hearing Zane Lowe interview Abel made me realize how my perception of him as some cracked out Starboy isn't entirely accurate. Sure, there has to be loads of talent in deck to get him to where he is now, but hearing about his process of making music and how his new album came together was an interesting watch. Mad respect Weeknd.

For a bit of concert porn, mau lovers got themselves something to get all excited about when Joel unveiled a new cube design for his live set. Knowing how much he nerds out over technology, I'm sure no expense will be spared in making it nothing short of awesome. For a bit of novelty, we got to see Flume re-imagine Ghost Town DJs My Boo live in studio with Vince Staples. Dude is a wizard on the MPC, so you could imagine how interesting his choppy, instrument driven remake sounded. And last, but never the least, MGK came through with Camila Cabello with some love/hate visuals that bring to life the story told on Bad Things. All I can say is, find me a more sexy and catchy hook out right now...#BadThings

More Intense Heat From Flume

First off, hope y'all had a good Thanksgiving and stuffed yourself at a leisurely pace like I did yesterday. Now that you've all made it back from you Black Friday shopping extravaganza, time to get back to some new music. We've all been waiting for some new music from Flume and today we got that in the form of a new Companion EP that will piggyback his recent full length album, Skin. The song is titled Heater and it's exactly that. Slow and steady instrumental builds give way to some heavy bounce throughout the track. The aggressiveness fits the rebellious vibe that is now being associated with the now infamous Sydney Lockout Laws. Some of you might remember the protest video below where the track was originally featured...

As a huge fan of small music venues, I'm just as fired up about things changing for the worse when it comes to legislature that could negatively impact the mom and pops types. Hopefully they're able to create something that adequately fends off alcohol related violence without effectively shutting down night life. In the meantime, I'm going to head on over to Spotify to give the four song EP a listen now that this one has piqued my interest...#Heater

Videos of the Week September 30th

The past few weeks have been relatively unbalanced in my eyes. When I say unbalanced, I mean it's either been mostly music videos or mostly funny/novelty videos. This week's top five got back to a nice 60/40 split between music and funny. Leading the way for videos was without a doubt The Weeknd's new video for Starboy. The more I listen to the track, the more impressed I am with the Daft Punk collabo's lyrically edgy, retro funk vibe. As a bonus, you get to see Abęl go to town on some expensive memorabilia with what can only be described as a crucifix glow stick.

In other musical efforts, you had a live cover of twenty-one pilots' Heathens from Bebe Rexha and Martin Garrix. It's crazy how much traction the Suicide Squad Soundtrack ended up getting and this collaboration is further proof of it's wide spread appeal. If you're looking for more trippy, Sci-fi stuff, you'll appreciate the zero gravity video put together by Flume and Tove Lo. Now I know what it would be like to walk on the sides of buildings with a space suit on.

In the world of funny and ridiculous, it doesn't get more extravagant than 2 Chainz's new season of GQ's Most Expensive $hit. In the past, we've seen him taste high end bottled water or expensive kittens, but this year he's expanding his tastes to coffee. So why not explore the Kopi Luwak civet coffee that cost $600 a pound? If you don't know what type of creature a civet is or even why I'd be mentioning an animal when talking about expensive coffee, just give it a watch and prepare to be slightly grossed out. If lavish isn't your bag, then you've got the good 'ole conventional funny from Jimmy Fallon and Sting who played everyone's favorite game, Textual Experience. Even though it might not have lived up to the awkwardness that Aziz Ansari brought to a previously posted episode, both Sting and Fallon brought their A game vocally, which made for a fun watch...#TextualExperience

No Need to Go to College if Being a Dropout is This Good

Now that everyone has access to software that can cut and trim music, it takes a special mashup to get my attention. If special is the bar, then Dropout's mashup with Anna Clendening of Flume's Never Be Like You with Gnash and Olivia O'Brien's I Hate U, I Love U far exceeds it. The beat is something to write home about with a slow build up, engaging chord progression, and more than its fair share of clangs and clacks to add intrigue. Anna Clendening deserves mad props for ducking in and out of both songs seamlessly over the hype instrumental. Did you catch that acoustic break down leading into the hook too? It's equal parts melodic and energetic, which makes for a fun listen. Feel free cop this one for $free.50 before dragging and dropping onto that under construction summer playlist you've been putting together...#NeverHateU

Disclosure Goes Womp Womp on Flume's Never Be Like You

To be honest, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the remix below. A little over a month ago I gushed over Flume's newest single, Never Be Like You. It was such a beautiful slow trap track that Kai's vocals shined all over. Given my affinity for the original, you can imagine how excited I was to see that Disclosure remixed the track.

Then, I pressed play and found myself transported to an after-hours lounge. Generally I like the Deep House vibe that Disclosure brings to tracks, but this one fell flat for me. Where Kai's vocals shined on the original, they were very subdued in the remix to a point of sounding monotonous. Speaking of monotonous, that's a good adjective for how the wobbly chords sounded after a few listens. A full six minutes of remix and I'm bummed to say that I wish the remix wasn't as long. Disclosure, I still love you guys, but this one wasn't my favorite track of your by a wide margin...#NeverBeLikeYou

Videos of the Week February 19th

You'd be hard pressed to find a more stacked week for videos. Truth be told, it was hard narrowing down the ten or so videos that were in the running for the top five. Between the Grammy performances and Kanye performing on SNL, there was a lot of content to pick from. In my opinion, the Kendrick Lamar and Justin Bieber/Jack U performances were the most memorable, but I'd give Lady Gaga's David Bowie tribute a solid honorable mention. And as far as Kanye goes, I don't really have word for Ultra Light Beams. It's dramatic, it's emotional and it's everything you'd expect in a Kanye performance.

In the land of non-live performances, Flume came through with some trippy and emotional visuals for his new single Never Be Like You. Love everything about the slow trap movement, which includes slow bangers like that one. And for some a humorous ending to the week, there's the third incarnation of musician Mean Tweets from the Kimmel Show. My favorite digs were on Ed Sheeran, Common and of course the creative Mumford jab in the end was worthy of mentioning...#MeanTweets

"I'm Only Human Can't You See, I Made a Mistake"

There's a lot of irony in me posting about Flume's new single, Never Be Like You. The entire song is about asking for forgiveness after making a mistake. Now, as I'm writing this, I feel like I need to ask for forgiveness for not posting enough of Flume's music.

Straight up, it's songs like Never Be Like You that are the reason I'm getting really excited about how more artists are mixing Hip Hop and electronic sounds into a new one sound. It's a beautiful concoction of emotion dripped, slow trap that disguises itself as a ballad. The heavy bass and vocals from Kai win on so many levels. Credit Flume for how well he manipulates the tempo with masterful drum and bass and experimental sounds throughout. Matter of fact, *slow clap* for the up and coming Aussie, he just turned into a must see on Sunday for me a Coachella...#NeverBeLikeYou
