RL Grime Goes Low on TNGHT's Acrylics

It doesn't get much more exciting than seeing RL Grime remix a track by TNGHT. Acrylics is one of TNGHT's more noteworthy tracks, but the trap re-work injects a shot of life into the original. Peep the original video below for reference...

Don't get it twisted, the remix isn't a huge departure, aside from the 808 bass that takes it from a energetic track to a speaker rattling, crowd igniting jam. If RL wanted us to get excited about his upcoming tour, this was one hell of a way to stir up some excitement...#VOID

Videos of the Week December 27th

Such sweet sorrow this week with the holiday season in full swing, yet one of my favorite up and coming groups TNGHT have officially separated. They were at the top of their game, producing tracks for Kanye and making their own great music. Now, they're off in two separate directions, which hopefully means we'll be getting twice the amount of great music from the HudMo and Lunice.

The good news is, if you're not ready to let go of the Holiday vibe, Timeflies has your back. Definitely not a bad rendition of Let It Snow if you feel like a pick me up. I'm looking forward to the Hollywood version of the NFL draft through Kevin Costner's portrayal of a Cleveland Brown's GM. Oh and Disclosure's flavor of dance music is so fresh you might as well pick it off the tree. That is all, see you in 2014...#HappyNewYear

Videos of the Week August 9th

Great week for videos with Jay Z leading the way with his "performance art film" of Picasso Baby. Despite the fact that he's ruffling feathers with every new things he does, I respect his visionary approach to Magna Carta Holy Grail. When you have the resources to do it, why not try things that nobody else has done before?

Oh, and in case you aren't tired of Miley's twerking ways, she played a starring role in Big Sean's new video. I probably would have given large amounts of money to be at either OVO Fest or TNGHT/Disclousure's Central Park concert. Maybe it was a coincidence that both took place in the same week, but jealous was running high this week...#GreatConcert

Kanye Has Blood on the Leaves TNGHT

I'm still at a bit of a loss trying to wrap my mind around Yeezus. Maybe I'm missing the whole artistry of it because I love Daft Punk and I love me some Hudson Mohawke and they both heavily contributed to the album's sound. After a couple laps, I'm still struggling to pick a favorite and I'm beginning to come to terms with the fact that I'm not a big fan of the abrasive tone of the album. It's clearly written with anger as a driving force, which isn't necessarily a bad thing because emotion can be a driving force behind the creation great music. Kanye sort of backed that up that angry assertion today by posting an American Psycho inspired Yeezus promo on his website today.

So if had to pick a favorite, it would be the Blood on the Leaves, which features Tony Williams and samples Nina Simone's Strange Fruit and TNGHT's R U Ready? Click below for the old school sample..

Whatever happened to the joyful 808 sound and the uplifting music? Maybe the album will grow on me, but for the time being, I'm not as excited as the general populace...#Yeezus

Videos of the Week April 12th

Little bit of everything from Hip Hop to R&B to straight up Indie electronic awesomeness this week. I still don't really have a good explanation for what type of music TNGHT makes, but what I do know is they take the best part of EDM (synthesizers) and mix it with the best part of Hip Hop beats (BASS) to create a marriage of epic proportions. I've always been in the minority supporting instrumental Hip Hop, so to see it take shape with an electronic twist makes me one happy camper.

As a side note, Major Lazer is still really awesome and Miguel has all but made it into the good graces of stardom...finally. No funny videos this week, but I'll leave you with an entertaining, current music hashtag instead...#Coachella2013

R U Ready TNGHT?

So I'm sitting here trying to figure out how exactly trap music fits into the spectrum of Hip Hop and EDM. It's almost like the 808 bass meets house music the way the genres blend together in trap. The track below is @TNGHT track that needed to be dusted off the shelf since it's almost been out a full year. The reason why it's all the sudden noteworthy again is because someone went back and followed the trail of breadcrumbs that led to @kanyewest and @HudMo's formal commitment to one another this past week.

As the story goes, Kanye purchased the beat below from HudMo and used it as an instrumental for the Victoria Secret fashion show last spring...queue the video...

If I've learned one thing about HudMo in the past week, he's not afraid to go big on his sounds, which clearly resonates with the Louis Vuitton don. R U Ready is about as Hip Hop instrumental as you can get, but that's cool with me because it #BANGS...

Hudson Mohawke is G.O.O.D.

Dear Major Hip Hop labels,
If you haven't noticed, the two trend-setting record labels in Hip Hop have now both signed electronic artists to their label. MOUNT...UP!

Sincerely,
GWDJ
I'll start by taking a quick trip in the time machine to last summer when I had an @AsherRoth track titled Roof Behind the Grill on heavy repeat. Sure Ash Roth's lyrical talents got me to initially give it a listen, but that wasn't what kept the track in heavy rotation. Nope, it was the beat that was like a side of sour cream when your realize you over-did the hot sauce on your burrito. It was a rowdy, attention-grabbing beat that sounded like someone beating on a pipe, which was different, but kinda cool.

Enter @HudMo who just joined YMCMB's @staffordbros as the latest EDM imports into Hip Hop. The Glasgow, Scotland native signed with G.O.O.D. Music as a producer, presumably for Kanye. If you've had your ear to the underground, you've no doubt heard of Hudson or his recent group endeavor @TNGHT with @Lunice.

Other than the cameo credit tag I gave him last summer, I've mostly slept on HudMo and have had to play catch up this week. Luckily, @PigsAndPlans had everyone's back and released a Top 10 Hudson Mohawke tracks today as a cliff notes version of his surprisingly lengthy history. My personal favorite is below and that's only because Kanye has yet to make a masterpiece out of his amazing beat Scud Books...#HudMo
