Album Review: Drake Take Care

It's been a while since I've done an album review, but I figured what better way to get back on the horse than reviewing @Drake's latest album. I know I'm a little tardy on the review, but better late than never. Those of you who visit my site on a frequent basis know how passionate I am about Drake's music, so the main reason I've put off the review for so long is because I knew it would be a big time commitment. Why can't I do a simple, short album review you ask? Because accountability to me is not doing a half-assed review of a quality album. As a result, I tend to be long winded with my album reviews and try to give back as much detailed opinion as I can possibly give in one post. #ConciseRhymesWithNotNice

To shake things up a bit, I tried a different approach to the organization of my review. For starters, I categorized the tracks on his album into two tiers and reviewed the tiers as a whole.
Top Tier (Top 7 Tracks):
1. Take a Shot
2. Over My Dead Body
3. The Motto
4. Take Care
5. Make Me Proud
6. Buried Alive (Interlude)
7. HYFR
As you know by now, I'm not one to shy away from writing about Drake tracks, especially tracks of his I really like. As a result, it shouldn't be a surprise that I've previously done a post on most of my favorite songs on Take Care. The best decision Drake made when constructing the tracklist was to lead with Over My Dead Body and Take a Shot. When trying to live up to enormous expectations, leading with two tracks that weren't singles, but were still standout tracks, was a great move.

With so much of the sound of the album being shaped by @OVO40, Take Care was able to take on a unique sound that is more comparable to So Far Gone than Thank Me Later. Even better, relatively unknown but extremely talented up and coming artists like @Kendrick_Lamar and @theweekndxo were able to get their chance to shine throughout the track on features. Hands down the most awe inspiring verse on the album came from Kendrick Lamar on the Buried Alive (Interlude). It's rare that artists use interludes for anything other than filler material on an album, but every interlude on Take Care was well done and provided contrast to the @NickiMinaj and @liltunchi tracks that were singles and subsequently garnered the most attention. For the people who really listen, it was cool to see that the album was chalked full of unique sounds, samples and features rather than high profile cameos. I really think Take a Shot will end up being a top 5 all time Drake track for me. The contrast of a subtly bitter, but proud tone lyrically gives the track an added layer of depth that isn't noticeable without listening closely. With all the ways to relate to the track it's no surprise that Weezy felt that same sort of personal accessibility to Drake's story...

Second Tier (8-13):
8. Headlines
9. We'll Be Fine
10. The Real Her
11. Crew Love
12. Underground Kings
13. Cameras Good Ones Go Interlude
Headlines ended up being a great way to get pop culture's attention as a lead single, but in the grand scheme of things there were a many more tracks I liked better on the album. In my ranking of second tier tracks, you'll find a few tracks that you may have skipped over, but I personally liked a lot. For example, We'll Be Fine an Crew Love stood out as tracks that I found myself gravitating to the more I listened to the album. We'll Be Fine is a mellow and upbeat and Crew Love is about as close to a ballad as you're going to get from Drake. I have to be in study or thinking mode to be able to listen to Drake's slower songs on Take Care, but that's not a bad thing because most artists can't pull off different sounds and tempos.

All in all, it's fair to say that I enjoyed Take Care about as much as I liked Wiz Khalifa's Rolling Papers and Drake's previous album Thank Me Later, but not as much as B.O.B.'s Adventures of Bobby Ray or Drake debut So Far Gone. I know it's becoming a little cliche that I keep giving albums a 4 out of 5 headphone grade on my review, but unfortunately since I have a 40 hour a week job, I don't have the time to review albums I don't enjoy. As a result, you're probably never going to get a review from me that is less that 4 out of 5 headphone because I won't be motivated enough to write about it if it's less than that. With that being said, I won't hesitate to critique an artist I really like if he sells out in any way (see Wale when he went MMG). Still, keeping it positive is what I try to do because hate is worthless emotion and you're not reading my blog in the first place if you want critical reviews...#NotMyCupOfTea

In two months Take Care has sold 1.3 million copies and will eminently head toward double platinum status in the coming months (especially if the song Take Care is released as a single). In other words, if you were looking for a sophomore slump from Drizzy, you've probably given up by now. It'll be interesting to see where he goes with his next album, but at this point it's safe to say he's proven that his lyrical depth and storytelling ability is second to none.

It's My Birthday I'll Post Drake If I Want To...

If you're like me, you're probably still trying to shake that fresh New Years hang over and muster up some energy to do something else besides watch NFL football. Fortunately for you, you don't have to drive 11 hours home on your birthday, which will be the case for me as I try to caffeinate enough to ensure my car stays on the road. As an aside, New Years day birthdays may sound cool in concept, but it's just way too much in one week with Christmas. Put it this way if you knew that your birthday would further stress out people close to you because they have to account for two holidays in one week and on the night of your birthday everyone thought it was their birthday too (New Years Eve), would you want that to be your birthday?...#HellToTheNaw

But since it is my birthday, I'm posting a pretty bad ass @Drake mash-up sewn together by @wtwht. I'll first encourage you to read the write up by Charlie himself on the mash up because his description is going to be more organic than my second hand summary. I like this mash-up not only because Drake is featured, but also because it's a version vs version mash. If you paid attention to the list of samples on Take Care, you would have noticed that Gil Scott Heron actually did I'll Take Care of U before Drake covered it on his album and added @rihanna on the hook. Shouts out to Jamie xx on the original production of the Gil Scott Heron version.

There's no getting around the classic raspiness of Gil Scott Heron's voice. Sadly he passed away at the age of 62 this year, ending a long, storied career as a poet, musician and author. We lost a lot of people in 2011, hopefully 2012 is a lot less eventful in that aspect...#HappyNewYearYall

"Ain't Talkin' Bout Apple But iMac"

What the hell, why not let a mix of young G's and OG's from south of the Bay Area have a crack at Drizzy's track The Motto? With the video in the editing room ready to drop this week, the hype will only continue for one of the most bangin' tracks in 2011. Obviously y'all recognize uncle @snoopdogg, but you may be hearing about Compton's own @defjamyg and LA's finest, @nipseyhussle. Both are steadily making a name for themselves and the remix below should lend credence as to why.

Only thing I wish I could have gotten out of the nice remix below is a different verse from @drake. You wanna talk about re-upping a single's potential, all that would have been needed is a fresh, new verse. Kinda #weaksauce that the version below is edited too, but beggars can't be choosers. Keep it locked for the real version...we keep it 100 in this area of the internet. Compton/LA area rap should never be censored under any circumstances. I can only think of one video to describe how I feel about the remix below being edited...

New Drake Over My Dead Body Remix

Apologies for missing yesterday's post y'all. It's a rarity, but there are a handful of times in a year where I'm inundated with family stuff and just can't get something up. Back on the grind today though, starting with a picture (above) from @drake's new video shoot for The Motto featuring @MistahFAB and @e40. Why not invite the Bay area's finest on a video shoot for a song that's reppin' the 505 and 707. As an aside, is it becoming a new trend to make a single out of a bonus track? I say that because it makes sense to push the deluxe version hard to maximize the profit, but why it is only starting to work now for artists? #FoodForThought

Anyways, the real reason for this post is to shout out one of UK's finest DJ's in @StarSlingerUK. He managed to inject a dance-able rhythm to one of my favorite Take Care tracks. That's no small task considering how slow and melodic the original track sounds. Take notice of the chipmunk echo on the vocals too, nice touch. My only critique of the remix is how jumbled the sound becomes when adding in another element to the rhythm. Yes, you can still hear the vocals clearly, but it's a bit of chaos when all put together. If you're in the mood for chaos and are a fan of Drake, give this one a listen...otherwise, I'm more than happy referring you to the original, which I'll always like better than any other version...#TakeCare

"I’m Embarrassed, I’m Feeling Like a Suicidal Terrorist"

Out of all the tracks that ended up on the final tracklist for Take Care, one of the most overlooked tracks will end up being an interlude. I use the word overlooked because for some reason, the leaked version of Take Care had track #7 (below) attached to the end of Marvin's Room. Since most folks had already heard Marvin's Room, it's not a unreasonable to think that most people who copped the leak, completely missed @kendrick_lamar's small, but potent contribution to the album.

This is exactly why Kendrick is rapidly ascending to the top of Hip Hop. At first, his alien, disoriented flow is awkward. Then all the sudden the beat rolls in and the delivery he unleashes a perfectly measured barrage of lyrical mastery. The speed, timing and tone of every syllable perfectly matched the beat to a T. As simple as the instrumental (provided by @ovo40) ended up being, the gentle, rolling rhythm is incredibly soothing.

As far as interludes go, it doesn't get better than this. Drake was nowhere to be found on the interlude, but the addition to the album is going to be huge. I'm pleased that the final iTunes version of Take Care will have this as a separate track, rather than attached to the end of track 6. On a related note, if you like what you hear below, make sure and give a listen to Section 80, which was one of the more slept on albums in 2011. Kendrick may not get his big break til Detox, but in my mind, he's already arrived...

"Take a Shot For Me..."

"May your neighbors respect you
Trouble neglect you, angels protect you
And heaven accept you..."
As promised, I told y'all I was going to take a few laps around Take Care before I made any judgments. Now that I've got my cardio in and I've had a chance to figure out which tracks I find myself gravitating to when I browse through the album, I've picked a favorite in Shot For Me. The timeless, nostalgic feel of the track is downright addicting. To start with, you've got @OVO40 providing the perfect slow bass with snaps over heavy background synths. Add in an SWV - Anything sample, a double shot of harmony and emotional lyrics that conclude with a perfectly executed toast by @drake, and you've got the makings of a really great slow jam.

There still isn't anybody close to as emotionally accessible than Drake in Hip Hop and this track is a great example of why that is a fact. The struggle to try and maintain certain relationships during his ascension to success is clearly something that he's needed to vent about through his music. It's as if he still misses that girl from back home who didn't really believe in his lofty dreams and now that he's worked to make those dreams come true and proved her wrong, he's subtly saying "I knew I would make it and you should have believed in me." Keeping it 100, past relationships are a great source of motivation and maybe that's another reason why I find Drake's music so accessible. True or not, there's a lot of bits and pieces to hang onto in every one of his verses, which is why so many people listen when he talks.

Take Care hits iTunes in a matter of hours at midnight tonight and both you and I should do our part in showing our appreciation...#CopIt

"Workin' With the Negatives Could Make For Better Pictures"

If you're looking for a typical, "what you'd expect when @drake and & @liltunchi collaborate" track, you'll probably be in the group of fans that put HYFR near the top of your list of best Take Care tracks. On the track, Drake goes slightly out of his element with a machine gun flow on the first verse before pulling down the landing gear and smoothly passing the baton to Weezy on the hook. The back and forth storytelling and one liners offer a constant reminder of why they both comfortably sit atop the Rap game when it comes to trend setting and creativity.

One big thing that hopefully won't go overlooked in the construction of Take Care is the Canada-heavy, home grown production. With multiple production credits going to @producertminus and @ovo40, the success of the album will have a lot to do with their efforts on the album. It's interesting too, that @boi1da only contributed production on one track (Headlines) after providing a couple beats on Thank Me Later. Don't worry for a minute, though, because the continuity of Drake's well-known sound has continued in an even more original form with his new album. Jury is still out on the verdict for Take Care, but you better believe the lyrical content and meaning behind the album is as deep and personal as you'd hope...#Nov15th

"Jealousy is Just Love and Hate at the Same Time"

Welp...the day we've all been waiting for. Some liken it to an early Christmas, but if I were a betting man, I would not be afraid to predict that the majority of my presents this Christmas will not be as fulfilling as the first listen of Take Care. All it took was a few listens to tracks like the one below, Over My Dead Body and Take a Shot and I was sold. On first listen, the comparisons to So Far Gone are fair and have the potential to undersell the potential of the album.

The best part of today's leak? Drake's reaction or lack thereof. In a world where artists are quick to get insecure and lash out via Twitter, in essence biting the hands that ultimately feed them, Drake instead took the high road by remaining positive that it only leaked a week before it hits shelves.

Isn't he the type of dude you just want to support? He knows your mind is mostly made up if you choose to download the leak, but is so grounded and confident in his product that he has the audacity to look a potential theif in the eye and say, "You know what, you're gonna feel so damn guilty when you listen to this that you're going to want to pay for it." I paraphrase, but in essence that's what he's saying and I find his demeanor somewhere in between badass and exemplary. You're going to be better off by listening to him, simple as that.

I never thought I'd compare any release of his to his first mixtape and maybe I'm a victim of the moment who has a very skewed view, but the indications are pointing toward greatness for @drake's sophomore album. I rarely have time to do album reviews, but I WILL make an exception for this album in the coming week or so. At the risk of making too many knee jerk reactions from one lap around Take Care, I'm gonna use a little self restraint and let it soak in a bit before I gush too much. For now, enjoy the first track below and let the @OVO40 beat marinade a bit as Drizzy kicks off his new story with help from @chantalkreviaz...

"You Only Live Once, That’s the Motto...YOLO"

I can honestly say I've never heard a @drake track like the one below. It's as if he decided to channel The Bay Area by unleashing his inner @e40 or @tooshort or Mac Dre (as he references in the track). I say E-40 because even though I've never been a huge fan of him as a rapper, I've got a ton of respect for the Hip Hop culture he played a huge part in shaping as a reckless, lyrical swaggerninja© (respect the copyright). The way Drizzy and @liltunchi go in on this track remind me of his unabated audacity on the mic, especially with the booty shaking bass brought to you in part by the versatile @producertminus.

I'm happy that this was a (somewhat) OVO sanctioned release and as par for the course, pretty solid body art on the post. As an FYI, YOLO means Y.ou O.nly L.ive O.nce, like the hook says. No need to go all the way to Urban Dictionary, I put it in the title in an attempt to state the obvious. Even though this is slated as an iTunes bonus track, I'd still give it top billing as far as tracks we've heard so far on Take Care. Peep the official tracklist below and feel free to become visibly excited that you don't recognize the majority of the tracks...#Anticipation + #Nov15th

"I Don’t Wanna Be in the Blind, But Sometimes I Stevie Wonder"

As bits and pieces of Take Care continue to trickle out before it's November 15th release, the album as whole is starting to take shape. If you're like me, you're most excited to hear @drake's collaboration with Stevie Wonder on Doing it Wrong and you've been mostly satisfied with the material that has surfaced so far. To recount, I'm a big fan of Headlines, Marvin's Room, Club Paradise and Make Me Proud, which means I'm 50/50 on Free Spirit, Dreams Money Can Buy and the newest addition below, The Real Her.

You might be wondering how I could be on the fence about a Weezy and Drizzy collabo? To be fair, they have set the bar really high with all the songs they have done together. In comparison, their last track together, She Will, might have been my all time favorite, but that wasn't because of anything Drizzy did though, as he only added a hook and @liltunchi went all homicide on the verses. Still, Wayne seems to think Drake's style is from another planet because of his trend setting conversation verses that draw the listener in. Couldn't have agreed more, he did a great job of summarizing part of the intrigue that Drake provides as an artist (below):
You've gotta be in the mood for a slow jam if you're going to give The Real Her a full listen. On the track Drake speaks on an the immediate connection that he's felt with a woman before, attempting to rationalize the undeniable allure the woman possesses. It's a scenario he's really good at explaining, especially over a slow, @ovo40 piano beat. It will probably grow on me over time, but for now there are more tracks out there that I'm excited about on the album that I'm cool with it.

Stream only since it wasn't an OVO sanction release. Til the next time, change that hash tag from #Oct24 to #Nov15 and keep it locked the next couple weeks as the official tracklist starts to unfold...

Videos of the Week

High powered week as far as videos are concerned, with Drake, Coldplay, Rihanna, Ash Roth, B.O.B. and Wale all releasing new ones. Not gonna lie, I'm a little disturbed at both Coldplay and Rihanna's videos. A person in an elephant costume riding a unicycle down the highway to meet up with his other elephant band friends? Who knows, it's buzzworthy, weird and low budget, maybe it works. As far as Rihanna, I get the track is all about finding love in the most hopeless places, but good god, drugs much? Little too trippy and downward spiral-ly for my taste, but maybe that's why there's successful. The more people talk about them, the more free publicity they get I guess. Whatever works I guess, have a good weekend y'all...

"I'm So, I'm So, I'm So, I'm So, I'm So Proud of You"

With Take Care looming on the horizon and rumors circulating in regards to potential tracks, it was cool seeing the timing of his newest leak that lead up to his SNL performance last night. Set to be the second single off the album, it's a feel good track that pays homage to that special woman that's worth penning a song about. You know that special chick that is so bad that calling her underrated is a understatement?

As far as the collabo is concerned, the chemistry between @nickiminaj and @drake is undeniable. @ProducerTMinus did his thing by providing a simple, but still head-nod worthy beat for Drake to do his well-known harmony on the hook and rapping on the verses with Snicky. If you're wondering what to expect when you hear the track, look no further than the YouTube re-run from SNL last night...

Good god Nicki was blessed with curves, that's all I gotta say bout that video. Exactly 30 days left til Take Care and I have yet to be anything but pumped about everything I've heard. It's still going to have to be better than great to top Game's R.E.D. Album...#JustSayin

"Tat My Name on You Girl so I Know It's Real"

Presumably upping the stakes in an attempt to weed out the groupies, @drakkardnoir and @rickyrozay are setting the bar higher if you want to really get with them. Spotted over at OVO, the picture above is evidently how you know it's real. I get it, it's like physical collateral because if the girl turns out to be fake, she'll forever have a reminder of it with your name tatted on her. Interesting concept, sorta forward thinking in nature and a potential asset for a lot of high profile celebrities to add to their arsenal. Still, I know a lot of fake girl that get a tat just to get with a celebrity. If it were up to me, I'd make it "tat my name where I can see it, so you know it's real", so that all the undercover one can't fake the funk.

As far as the execution and sound of the track, @ovo40 gets the production credit for providing the mellow template. Call it a street cred track with a touch of harmony for Drizzy Drake, displaying lyrics that get in it where they fit in with the Rozay influence. Not my cup of tea in the grand scheme of Drake tracks, but I can see why he went the direction he did with the track in collaborating with the industry's hottest rapper out now. Should further his clout/Hip Hop influence and provide a firmness to Take Care that all the trappers and gangstas were missing on Thank Me Later...#Oct24th

Videos of the Week

With Drizzy makin' Headlines this week (literally), he gets a lotta ink this week deservedly. That track is growin' on me now, especially after seein' him perform it live in concert. In case you forgot, Watch the Throne is due out in three days and hasn't leaked other than Otis, which is some kind of accomplishment these days. No idea how they did it, but bravo Hov and Ye, as a blogger I am impressed man.

"The Real is on the Rise"

Three months prior to the release of Take Care, we get a nice Sunday gift from the folks over at OVO. The lead single @drakkardnoir's upcoming album will be Headlines produced by @ovo40 and @boi1da. So that's what that tweet two weeks ago meant...
His new single has come in addition to more news this past week surrounding other possible tracks on the album like Free Spirit feat @rickyrozay and The Real Her feat @liltunchi. Even more interesting is the thought of him getting together with other unique acts like @REALDJPREMIER and @flo_tweet on Take Care.

As far as the track is concerned, it's another mix of verses and harmony over a vibrant, tempo-building rhythm provided by @WelcomeOVO members Boi-1da & 40. Honestly, I'm not overly blown away with the track like you'd expect from on a first single, but I'm more than willing to judge the track in a few months when it's part of a bigger picture that Drake's trying to paint. I can understand his rationale for "hating singles" because usually it involves in the artist giving in to the record company in favor of something that will cash in on iTunes. What's great about a track like this is that it'll probably still move more than a fair share of units based on brand name to make the suits happy, but Drake probably didn't have to sacrifice much creatively in his choice of single. In other words, I have no idea why he chose this to be his first single since it doesn't fit the build of what you'd expect, but I'm ok with being patience and judging based on the final project in it's completeness. I don't think a lot of artists have the wiggle room to get away with that, but when you're on top and consistently release quality music, you get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to fans' patience.

Like a paycheck, I'm taking to the bank that there will be a lot more to come that'll probably top this before the October 24th release...#Watch

"I’m Just Sayin’ You Could Do Better"

Back again with an emotionally charged R&B track, it's been too long since we've been privy to album quality material from @drakkardnoir. Listening to his new track Marvin's Room is a reassuring reminder to fans that he's sticking to what got him to the top of the mountain in Hip Hop. Nobody in Hip Hop can pull off a track like this, not one artist is comfortable enough in their own skin and talented enough vocally to go R&B for 3 minutes then transition on a dime to a line like, "I think I’m addicted to naked pictures, And sittin talkin’ ’bout bitches, That we almost had."

It's difficult at times for me to explain why I'm such a fan of his music, but as I listen more and more to his work I'm starting to think that his ability to switch gears between R&B and Hip Hop makes me listen closer to what he's saying. Sure he's just as guilty as the next rapper in talking about the luxuries that are now afforded to him, but his lyrical content is much more relatable since he's not afraid to be raw. Like, I've had that same night where I'm out at a party and with a girl, but all I can think about is another girl that's not there and also not single. And it's never a good idea to call them drunk, which always results in saying way too many honest things that shouldn't be said to a girl who has a boyfriend, but it happens because when you're drunk it seems like a good idea to say what you think.

Lyrical content aside, the simple, but mellow instrumental put together by @ovo40 will definitely take you back to So Far Gone. With @boi1da's career having skyrocketed much in part because of the visibility that Drake helped him get, it's only a matter of time before 40's career takes that same route. The only thing that really sucks is that we have to wait about four and a half months until Take Care drops on Drake's birthday, October 24th. Between this and Dreams Money Can Buy, Drizzy is 2 for 2 without having dropped a single yet, which is scary. Next month we get a single and until then I'll keep enjoying the two pieces of the story he blessed us with this past month...

"Dreams Money Can Buy, They Told Me It’s Like a High, And It Wasnt a Lie"

After more than a few months off, @drakkardnoir is back on the grind, eager to share with the world a new track off his upcoming album Take Care. I'll be pleasantly surprised if his sophomore album drops by the end of the year, but if this leak turns out to be official, it may be coming more sooner than later. Between this track and his lengthy cameo on Khaled's new laid back summer anthem, it's like going from not seeing a long lost friend for months to seeing them twice in a week.

The same, simple winning formula is applied to the track as @OVO40 drops a harmonic beat that allows Drake to remind everyone he's still on top and enjoying the luxuries that fame and money are affording his lifestyle. On first listen this sounded a little well rounded for a loosie, which is why it wouldn't be surprising if it landed on his next album as a non-single. Just enough to keep us wanting more, but still only a crumb of what's yet to come with his new album that will be admittedly less rushed and more well thought out. So much for lowering the expectations, if Thank Me Later was rushed then maybe rushed is the way to go?

Time will tell, but until then I'll be chanting silently in my head "Don't f with me, Don't f with me..."
