Slaughterhouse Adds Another Jab to Southpaw

You wanna talk about a star studded Hip Hop lineup? All I needed was to see produced by Just Blaze & araabmuzik to get me to bite, but having Slaughterhouse execute the verses takes it to another level. RNS is yet another dope addition to the Southpaw Soundtrack that already has two Eminem singles leading the way. With Joell setting leading the way with the first verse and hook, the rest of the track fell into place nicely with Joe Budden and Crooked I stepping up to the mic swinging. Not sure where Royce was in all of this, but the end result was sufficient enough that I can give the absence a pass...#RNS

Not All Great Instrumentals Are Worthy of Verses

It's incredible to think that one of the most legendary Hip Hop producers of my generation was able to produce a stellar beat that never got to see the light of day. Why didn't it ever get released? Well, in the words of Just Blaze himself:

“Jay asked me to hold this for him and Jeezy. Ross did something with it. Chris Brown wanted it badly but couldn’t find the right vocal flow for it once we got in studio. Canei wanted to pass it to Cole, but it was held up by someone else who actually cut me a check for it. Then it ended up just sitting, and I was weird about playing it for folks. Everyone who heard it thought it was amazing but couldn’t come up with a song to it lol. Understandable though. There’s a LOT going on."

Wait a minute, so you're telling me that Jay Z, Jeezy, Rick Ross, Chris Brown, and J Cole all hand their hands on this beat and never fully harnessed it's capabilities? The beat has Just Blaze's style written all over it with a live band feel that is accentuated by vibrant piano and a heavy dose of strings for good measure. It's a testament to great instrumentals being able to tell a story without words. In my mind, the sun is shining on a windy day walking through the streets of Manhattan with this playing. Even if the Megatron Don is turning more toward the electronic/trap realm, it's little morsels like Miracles that make you appreciate his greatness at whatever he produces...#Miracles

OnCue Has Got So Much Love to Give

There are few things in life that warrant a quadruple take. I'm thinking things like a gorilla riding a shark or a flying otter, those types of extreme novelties that seem too good to be true. So what warrants a quadruple take in music? A track co-produced by Just Blaze and Hudson Mohwake.

I know what you're thinking, it's too good to be true. That type of skepticism is where I started too because it has to be too good to be true. But this was a rare time where the collabo not only lived up to the hype, it actually surpassed what I thought possible. That's mostly because OnCue is a really really talented lyricist and he killed it!

About a year and a half ago I posted his track New Religion and made a mental note. Then he came out with the Just Blaze directed Kinda Late. Now Just Blaze has fully thrown his support into Cuey's corner and I see no reason why he can't be this year's Macklemore. I know the comparison is a little cliche and it's not entirely because they're both white, they sound sorta similar on the mic too. Whatever the case, this is one of the dopest beats in 2014 HANDS DOWN and I have hopes that it will continue to get circulated to a point where Cuey starts to become a well-known name in Hip Hop. Heads up on that upcoming EP and don't be bashful about copping the song for free below...#AngryYoungMan

So what happens when you mix house with Hip Hop? The quick answer is trap music, the long answer is holy crap Just Blaze is starting to seriously dabble in EDM. Maybe I'm not the only one whose tastes in Hip Hop have drifted toward the more energetic, upbeat synthesized sounds of dance music. With the help of Mysto & Pizzi, 1UP! is leaping out to the lead for most polarizing song of 2014. Just read some of the comments under the song on Soundcloud. The trap folks and Hip Hop heads are both either all for it or totally against it. Whatever you do decide for yourself, give it a full listen before you judge because there are more than a one awe inspiring drops throughout the track...#1UP

Interesting mix of interviews, videos and commercials this week from some of my favorites. In my opinion, it's a toss up between Big Sean and Mike Posner for top video of the week. For those who weren't living under a rock this week and caught Kendrick Lamar's lyrical assault on Hip Hop, you're probably more than a little interested about how Big Sean felt about being called out on his own track. As the story goes, Big Sean laid down his verse first and then received Kendrick's after the fact. He made the decision to not go back and change his verse after being called out and actually got excited about the effect that it would have on Hip Hop. +10 pts for Big Sean taking the high road and releasing the track as is for the betterment of Hip Hop.

Coming in second is Mike Posner's adorable video for The Way It Used To Be. Long story short, he spends the majority of the video working together with his friends to convince the girl he was with to stay with him and not break up. I won't ruin the ending, but it's got a twist and it works out for Mikey in the long run. You can file that video under sh*t that doesn't happen in real life. Rounding out the list is some new Haim and an interesting short film with Just Blaze, Baauer and Jay Z...#Higher

It's rare that I ever come across a Hip Hop instrumental worth posting, but then again, I'm pretty sure the track falls somewhere outside of the realm of Hip Hop. Sure, @JustBlaze has gained most of his notoriety from producing Hip Hop tracks, but those who have witnessed his wide array of skills know he's far from a one-trick pony.

Ladies and gentleman of the jury, Behold: Exhibit J. It's tough trying to pigeonhole the sound of the track, but if I were asked to take a shot, I'd characterize it as trendy, upbeat elevator music. You know, kinda like the stuff you hear in lobbies of five star clubs or trendy restaurants. Y'all know what I'm talkin' bout...

If your memory hasn't escaped you and you remember back to 2009 when MTV first released Jersey Shore, the Megatron Don was busy making the guidos fist pump with Exhibit G F & P (Guido Fist Pump). It seems like everybody has been talking about @bobatl's new video for Both of Us with @taylorswift13 this week. Aside from that video, the video for @OnCue's bangin' track New Religion also surfaced this week with @Drake's lil' Khalil Mamoon hookah interlude. Is it me or has the Club Paradise tour awakened his inner lyricist demon? He went through an R&B phase for a minute right before Take Care and now it seems like all these young cats he's touring with have poured gasoline on his desire to spit bars left and right.

I'm anticipating this post to somehow blow up my blog because both @Chrisbrown and Drake are mentioned in the same post. Luckily, @LupeFiasco provided a needed buffer between the two tracks with a video for his all too ironic single Freedom Ain't Free...#AndNeitherAreClubBrawls

Videos of the Week March 23

Some high profile videos flew across the radar this week with @lanadelrey's Blue Jeans video leading the way. By far, the most entertaining watch for me this week was hearing @royceda59 recount @SLAUGHTERHOUSE's past week on tour. Just the SXSW story alone was worth the watch because you rarely hear an artist openly admit that they were worried another legendary artist was going to upstage them. That's gotta be a baaad feeling when you're headlining, about to go on stage, and @kanyewest plays two or three tracks that ignite the crows and make you go SON OF A BITCH, HOW ARE WE GONNA TOP THIS?? It's that type of down to earth real talk that makes me respect the hell out of them individual artists and as a group. Now if they could only hit Philly on a night besides this Tuesday, I'd really be pumped...#WishfulThinking

"You Know What We Doin', Whiskey For Communion Tonight"

All it takes is one big track to make a name for yourself in Hip Hop. Sure, it helps that your one big track features a legendary name like @justblaze. For me, that's what got me to sample it, name brand recognition. It's sad and sometimes I feel like a snob for doing it, but in a world where time is curren$y, folks like me who review music don't have the time to listen to everything. The best advice I can give to an aspiring artist is to get someone on your track that a lot of people know.

A cameo or feature will get your foot in the door enough to kick in wide open if you bring the heat like @MyNameCuey. This track reminds me a lot of one of my favorite hidden gems by @chrisyoungraps called Bottles of Fiji Water & a Beautiful Girl. It's got an infectious hook and a equally upbeat vibe on the beat brought to you by Just Blaze and @XpartysuppliesX. OnCue is everything his name says. He's able to go bar for bar on the verses and isn't doesn't sound out of characters singing his own hook.

For all of you hardcore fans who made it out to SXSW last week, you may have caught him performing throughout the week. Word has it he's got a new Just Blaze produced video for his song Kinda Late faeturing @mikeposner and @eightyocho. You can bet there's plenty more to come from one of BK's finest up and comers. T.I.'s New Mixtape is Studio Album Quality

No matter what field you're in or who you interact with, it's universally known that making a first impression can go a long ways. After one lap around @tip's F*uck Da City Up album mixtape that dropped today, it's pretty clear he wants to make the first big Hip Hop statement in 2012. I'm a firm believer that production is the key to success in Hip Hop, so you could imagine what I thought when I saw that T.I. hooked up with legendary beatmakers on the mixtape like @DRDRE, @djtoomp, @producertminus, @manniefresh, @HitBoy_SC and to top it off, @JustBlaze. It's hard to get one single from one of those producers on an album, let alone a whole free mixtape worth.

For starters I'm posting a track that may get overshadowed by other high profile collabos on the mixtape like the title track he did with Jeezy. The track below, Oh Yeah, is low key track stashed at the back of the mixtape with @TreySongz on the hook and @JustBlaze on the beat. It's got a feel good vibe to it and gives plenty of room for T.I. to show off a little lyrical vitality on the mic. Somehow the Megatron Don always seems to concoct inspirational beats with his use of strings on every beat. While Oh Yeah won't exactly make you jump out of your seat like other beats he's done, it's sufficiently head nod worthy and a standout track on a mixtape that would put some of the best studio album releases in 2011 to shame. Something tells me I'll be posting a lot of favorites from this mixtape this week...#KeepItLocked

X Games Now Embracing Hip Hop Culture

Maybe it's because @travisbarker has been crossing over to Hip Hop of late? Maybe it's because young, up and coming artists like @Yelawolf enjoy rubbing shoulders with the BMX crowd? Or if you're gonna go back to the beginning, what about Kick, Push by @LupeFiasco?

Whatever it is, if you would have asked me even 5 years ago if we'd hear @ghostfacekillah ferociously spitting bars over a @JustBlaze beat with halfpipe highlights running on the background, I might have told you to ease up on that lean. Off Ghost's 2006 album Fishscale, it's pretty clear The Champ never really got it's due for being the standout track it is. As such, dap is in line for the folks at the four letter network for unearthing the under appreciated classic and being unafraid to cement the bridge between Hip Hop and X Games. For those of you googling to find out what track it was in the commercial, hopefully you're not disappointed with where you ended up, I gotcha back. In case you (for some strange reason) didn't think @Eminem deserved to win best Hip Hop album at the Grammys this week, give a listen to the track below Fly Away. I say it like that because the track didn't make the cut for his award winning album Recovery. Tell me any other Hip Hop album would have not been better with the addition of a @justblaze produced track like the one below. I'd even argue, it woulda fit perfectly as a single for Eminem because it fits the mold of damn near every single he's put out, with the "rising above life's problems and persevering message" being the driving force of emotion for the track.

Big fan of the slightly auto-tune aided hook that the Megatron Don brought to the track too. The uplifting march of the beat is aligns with the sound Eminem has copyrighted over the years. The sound allows his abrasive, full of energy, emotional delivery to come across as genuine and inspirational. That's why he's one of the best and if you're gonna continue to hate, plain and simply...

Drake Speaks on His Favorite Verse

When I first saw the caption "Drake speaks on his favorite verse" last weekend, I was more than a little curious to see what his choice was and how it aligned with what I thought. Before I speak on it, watch the video of his explanation below...

Can't argue with his choice, there is an uncanny amount of emotional venting on that track that's so real it put him in Marshon Lynch style beast mode on the mic. Anyone ever notice he used two rhyming sounds in the song with the first verse using the hard ō (like in own) and the second banking on a hard ā (like in gain)? I'm a firm believer that the emotional bi-product of adversity can be so inspirational, it can result in truly amazing shit at times. Put it this way, you wouldn't be reading this post right now because I wouldn't have decided to design a blog if my two year relationship that I went all in on didn't end abruptly (#RealTalk), so I can attest to how focusing and harnessing the power of adversity can result in inspiration if pointed in the right direction. And it just so happens Drake used the same energy when he went in the booth and let out the raw emotion explaining the chaos surrounding his life. From the raw energetic delivery to the haunting clap of the beat cooked up by @ovo40, it went from a diamond in the rough track to a standout on one of the best mixtapes in the history of Hip Hop. Song will never have an expiration date in my archives and always own a parking space in my iTunes...#Truth

That wasn't the only interesting video that dropped last week either, as the 17 sec viral Twitvid of @justblaze also hit the blogsphere. Only so much can interest someone in 17 sec (#TWSS), but when @DRDRE insinuates that another album will be coming out on 04/20 as the camera pans to him, people tend to have the patience to watch it...

This was fun for like a day until it was announced by "a rep close to Dr. Dre" that 04/20 wasn't a release date for Detox. Sure it's been damn near a decade long witch hunt with multiple sightings, but with the release of one and a half singles in the past couple months, there seemed to develop a calm before the storm sort of feeling. Ya, I know we've heard this thunder before off in the distance and had our expectations cause anger through immense anticipation, but I think we can all settle on a realistic, we'll believe it when we see it attitude...#KeyserSozeStyle

Also finding it's way on the internet Hip Hop blotter was the birthday of Aaliyah who would have turned 32 last Sunday, Jan 16th. It's more than crazy that she passed away tragically ten whole years ago when she was only 22 years old. Man just think about that, I feel like she made so much great music in so little time and then was taken from us at the drop of a dime. I can still remember back in the day bein' absolutely blown away when I saw the video below:

Man I was only 9 years old when I heard that track and fell in love with it. That song went so hard for a lady R&B singer, it was hard for the fellas to not take notice of he's thug undertones, which were delivered with such melody it was unmistakably different from any other artist at the time. And that's a big reason why she was such a big inspiration to Drake, who needed her to be the pioneer he leaned on to lead by example and instill in him the confidence to do more than just rap. It was interesting to me to hear how he was inspired by her non-gender driven lyrics that were written and delivered in a way that appealed to both men and women at a time where it was strange for a guy to be singing a R&B melody. If you missed it check his open letter to Aaliyah he wrote a year ago...

Evidently @drakkardnoir wasn't the only one who grew up idolizing Dana Haughton either, as @JColeNC also hopped on the cameras provided by SoulCultureUK to open up about the beat he made for Aaliyah when she passed and how he was crushin' on her back in the day...

I'll leave you with one last one of Drake performing Fireworks with Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine live at the Hammerstein Apollo in London. Can't really touch his version with Alicia, but still pretty damn cool...

Throwback Thurs: "Dear Summer I Know You Gon' Miss Me...

...For We've Been Together Like Nike Airs & Crisp Tees"

For being as timeless and nostalgic sounding as it ended up being, it's a cot damn shame that Jay-Z's Dear Summer got lost in the shuffle of @MEMPHISBLEEK's 534 album in 2005. The piano and vocal sample of a slightly sped up version of Weldon Irvine's track from 1979 titled Morning Sunrise set the tone for a throwback sort of feel on the sample. Check the original below:

It's fitting too that @justblaze, aka the Megatron Don, was behind the production of this track, going back 30 years for the sample. To me, marrying old sounds with new styles like the sound on the track below is a classy way to pay homage to the past. For me the best part of the track comes at the end where Jigga launches off on a grand finale, waxing poetic by penning a fitting close for his relationship with "Summer" in saying:

"Listen here summer baby, I just believe it's the right thing to do
I got a brand new bitch, corporate America
She showing me a lot of action right now
And I know you put me on my feet and all, but

Whether it's @s_c_ subtly pointing out the fact that he had 6 consecutive summers with hot singles or even jabbing @thegame as a "half-assed newcomer", it's clear he giving a farewell to being the king of the summer of 2005. In wishing all the other artists good luck and signing off in a way to devote more of his attention to his new bitch "corporate america", it was a poetic way to pass the torch.

To me, it's a great song to play at the end of Summer, serving as the backdrop for the memories and trips I've made the past three or so months. With college football starting tonight and Labor Day on the horizon, the breakup with Summer is drawing near in a very palpable way. The temps are even falling 20 degrees serving as a very clear reminder that long sleeves are on the horizon. I'm left thinking only three words...

Between this track, No Love and Drop the World, Eminem and Lil' Wayne have developed an unmatched chemistry on their collaborations in the last year. I'd even throw their work with Drake and Kanye on Forever into that mix of legendary verses, all in one calendar year.

This time the dynamic duo adds a third revered element to the collaboration with @justblaze aka The Megatron Don on the production credits. He takes a page out of the 1993 dance track What Is Love by Haddaway. If you're drawing a blank listen below..

I thought about flipping this into one of my Did They Do the Sample Justice? pieces, but #lesbihonest, nobody even remembers who Haddaway was, so it would be unfair to compare somewhat of a one hit wonder to a colossal collaboration like this one. Sure the sample will give it an element of familiarity that combined with the namepower of both Lil Wayne and Eminem will result in a can't-miss platinum single. It goes beyond that though because this Recovery album is a final sign that Eminem has finally gotten off the drugs and is back to being a *deserving* platinum artist that will sit in the Hip Hop Hall of Fame someday.

I'm not going to spoil my album review, but it's really hard to hold back my giddiness at how well put together and classic Recovery is going to be. Just look, the production credits for his album were released this week...

Add that up 3 DJ Khalil tracks, 3 Just Blaze tracks, 2 Boi-1da tracks, and might as well throw in a track from Jim Jonsin, Dr Dre and rising producer superstar Emile. Like a hungry Usain Bolt, on there is absolutely no half steppin' on this album for Eminem, he got the best producers and was very motivated to do well, which is a deadly combination for any artist.

Not to discount this standout track from Recovery, but I'd still give a slight edge to Drop the World over No Love because the verses are a cut above from both Weezy & Em, plus the beat is more unique by Chase N Cash. The quoteables on this are endless though..

Ask Yourself - Are You Living or Are You Existing?

I've always had my eye on Kidz in the Hall because of their refreshingly organic, true Hip Hop sound. Being signed to Rawkus Records with the likes of Mos Def and Talib Kweli, you can see where the organic Hip Hop comparisons come from by association. On top of that, they've always been intriguing duo to their close proximity with MegatronDon (Just Blaze)who has invested in both Naledge and Double-O after he oversaw their first album School Was My Hustle.

With tracks like Wheelz Fall Off and their block rockin' banger Drivin' Down the Block, their new album titled Land of Make Believe is sure to push more than a few copies when it is released on Tuesday March 9th.

Credit is due to the track below for the uplifting message provided lyrically and the inspiring intro Naledge uses set up the performance. There aren't too many Hip Hop songs these days that encourage you to challenge the way you're living life and strive to get the best out of the hand you're dealt like this track does. In the words of Naledge:

"We party and shit right?, but at the end of the day, we all have a dream, you know we not on this earth for nothin', so I ask you one question
Are you living or are you existing? see what I'm doing right now is I'm livin,, for the hope that you take this what I'm doin right now leave out here and can go to your job and live too and if you not living the right shit, shit tell your boss I'm bout to stop existing god dammit..."

I was more than happy to snack on the food for thought with the Living vs Existing argument because when you think about it and over analyze (like I tend to do with everything), it can be pretty thought provoking. Generally speaking I don't have much sympathy for people who fight to exist everyday because usually they're too lazy to change and lack the intrinsic motivation to make a change that will allow them to live. I know it's not always that cut and dried and there are extenuating circumstances that can make living seemingly impossible, but life really is what you make it and there are plenty of people who have it worse than you, so you might as well do your best to view the glass as half full or at least have the desire to make a change that may cause the water level in the glass to rise in some way shape or form. Just sayin', positivity is contagious, so tracks like shouldn't go unnoticed and truly are the hidden gems that deserve to get to the masses (unlike most of processed music you hear on the radio).

As I climb down off my soap box, I'll again encourage you to give this track and their new album Land of Make Believe a listen when it comes out on Tuesday. I would also be remiss if I didn't point out Colin Monroe's positive influence and mellow contribution to the chorus in giving this track it's inspirational tone. Give it a listen...
