"It All Started with a Broken Heart"

I'll admit, the first time I was introduced to Rozes via The Chainsmokers, I wasn't sold. The song Rozes was solid, but far from my favorite release from Alex and Drew. Then Rozes dropped Matches with Cash Cash and I started to come around a bit to her quietly melodic style. That "you were made of matches and it burned me to the ground" hook had me singing along every time I listened.

This week my opinion of Rozes came full circle with her effort on Galantis's Girls on Boys. Her piano led vocal lead-in had me convinced Galantis had gone full folk for a minute. Then came the bouncy bass, tropical vibes, and a clap-heavy beat with plenty of bounce. If you read between the lines, there's plenty of sexual tension bubbling beneath the surface on the lyrics. It's a fun track that will take you through the entire gamut of tempos. Overall a stellar collabo that will be a welcome addition to Galantis's upcoming Dance album due out on Sept 15th...#GirlsOnBoys

"You Were Made of Matches and You Burned Me Down"

When I hear the name Cash Cash, the thought of fun dance music comes to mind. Most recently I'm thinking Millionaire or How to Love, but I'm willing to go back all the way to their collabo with Bebe Rexha on Take Me Home. Simply put, the three brothers from Jersey bring a lighthearted energy to their music that's easy to like.

That trend continued on their latest single with Rozes, Matches. At first, you might confuse it with a power ballad, but the triumphant, Future Bass feel on the drop will tell you otherwise. We got our first glimpse of Rozes vocal talents on The Chainsmokers' Roses and she continued to show off her emotionally charged vocal prowess on this one. When all is said and done, this one may not match the heights of Millionaire, but it's destined to get plenty of love on Top 40 radio. Don't be bashful y'all, crank this one out and sing along with me...#Matches

"Take it All, Ain't No Way I Can Break it Off"

With all the collaborations between Hip Hop and EDM these days, I'm beginning to raise my own bar for being impressed. That being said, a collabo between three of my favorite artists is probably starting out with a higher chance of eclipsing that bar than your average track. Seeing Big Gigantic, Logic, and Rozes on the same track together caused me to fumble with the mouse because I tried to click play so fast.

...and All of Me absolutely impressed! It was way more mellow than I imagined, but I was really stoked with how well Big Gigantic put together a slow, melodic Hip Hop sounding beat. There's a gentle drop, but if I closed my eyes and listened to it without knowing who was on it, I wouldn't have pegged this as a BG track. It was one of those rare times where I felt like I needed to re-evaluate my expectations for Big Gigantic because I clearly shortchanged his wide variety of sounds. Maybe the horns after the gentle drop are more of a tell than I thought at first, but it's much more slow trap than the usual sax driven beats he churns out. Even better, Logic chipped in a stellar 16, which along with Rozes hook, elevated the track well beyond what I expected. It's clearly one of my favorite new songs and I hope it, along with his upcoming Brighter Future album, is too...#AllOfMe

Videos of the Week August 14th

Novelty won over actual music in this week's top five. I say that, but the standout video of the week was from The Chainsmokers. While they normally err on the party side, they instead took a more theatrical, artistic angle on their new video. Kudos to Alex and Drew for giving the green light to something a bit more apropos for the visuals on Roses.

If you wish you knew more about the backstory of 8 Mile, then Honest Trailers has your back. If you haven't ever seen an Honest Trailer from Screen Junkies, then you're in for some fun. Then there's the Giants recreation of the Full House theme song, which couldn't have been more appropriate given the TV series was based on San Francisco. If you're in the mood for some sexiness and wanted to see Robin Thicke and Nicki Minaj flirt a bit, then you'll want to check out Back Together. And last, but definitely not least, Timeflies came through with their own original mix of The Weeknd's Can't Feel My Face. I'm starting to think that there isn't a song they can't cover successfully...#CantFeelMyFace

Videos of the Week July 10th

Haven't you ever wondered what it would be like to have Jerry Seinfeld interview Stephen Colbert? No, of course you didn't wonder that, but now that I've planted the seed, doesn't it sound interesting? Well it was a full fifteen minutes of interesting conversation that gave me a different, more human view of Stephen Colbert. I also had no idea how closely he resembled a sea captain!

In other non-comedian news, The Chainsmokers did not disappoint with their new video for Roses. Evidently they have fun on tour, who would have known? If you've been a reader of this blog you know of my infatuation with the Holy Ship musical festival on a cruise ship. In case you're wondering, it's still on my bucket list and I continue get super jealous when I see the recap video every year. In other EDM news, it was cool seeing Skrillex add another Hip Hop collaboration to his expanding list of hits. And finishing out the week we've got the first of many Drake/Apple Music exclusives in the form on his video for Energy. Was it just me or was it more than a little weird to see him super imposed onto other peoples' bodies?...#Energy

"Get Drunk on the Good Life, I'll Take You to Paradise"

As promised a few weeks back when we posted The Chainsmokers most recent remix of Life of Dillon's Overload, here comes a fresh new single. On first listen you might think to yourself "man this is different from their usual" progressive house sound," but I'm not so sure it's that big of a departure.

In fact, I'd challenge you to go back and listen to their entire catalog of stellar remixes that include a lot of Indie tracks with a similarly chill vibe. Sure Roses might come off a bit more "Future Bass-y", as the kids like to call it, but mellow and heavy isn't something that's new to Alex and Drew. Yes I did just notice that rhymed as I wrote it, so I'm gonna go with it. Key takeaway here is that The Chainsmokers continue to make great music with a variety of sounds, tempos and vibes, which makes for a fun experience when unwrapping one of their new tracks. Check this one out on iTunes when it comes out at midnight y'all...#Roses
