Mike Posner...Panties...Floor

For over a week now, I've been listening to @mikeposner's new mixtape The Layover. Now I've already posted a few songs, so you might know where I'm going with this already, but there's little doubt in my mind now that The Layover should win mixtape of the year. As I'm writing this, I'm still second guessing whether I should write about other great tracks on the mixtape like Hey Lady feat Twista and A Perfect Mess (Think to This). If only I had the time, I could write a dissertation about why I think this mixtape is so great.

For starters, there is a huge void in the genre of thuggish R&B and Mikey P appropriately fills that gap with his slightly edgy lyrics and well-known Hip Hop cameos. I think of TQ when I listen to Posner and that's a good thing because it's been damn near a decade since I've heard something comparable to some of TQ's older tracks. No shit, I just counted 10 tracks on this mixtape that I've been constantly circulating on my daily playlist and to put things in perspective, the shelf life for tracks on that playlist can usually be measured in hours. If I were to give a award for best cameo verse on the mixtape, it would be between @TWISTAgmg, @MACHINEGUNKELLY and @CyHiDaPrynce's verse below. Pure thuggish, unadulterated sexiness that is more that worthy of a spot on the latest BMM.

There's a good reason why Room 925 has a parenthetical suggestion after the song title that I'll let you review on the tracklist. If the sexiness of Mike's voice doesn't cause a woman to de-clothe in front of you, then you're just not meant to hook up dude...#Truth

Ever since the signing of @Yelawolf to Shady Records, I've been eagerly awaiting news on any sort of official release. That came a couple weeks ago when he announced the titled (Radioactive) and (always tentative) release date (September 27th) of his first high profile, full length release. According to all the rumors, the track below was said to be the first single off the disk, but that was quickly shot down by Yela yesterday via Twitter...

Single or not, the track is dope with the rhythmic, kick-drum aided, lyrical assault he unleashes. Unique doesn't quite do his delivery justice, it's choppy sorta like @TechN9ne, but with a weird mix of intellectual, machine-gun-quick syllable ridden, slum-style ghetto slang. It's abrasive, in your face, unapologetic, but every bit bouncy and funky at the same time. Hip Hop needs different and interesting artists that are so unafraid of blazing their own path that they don't get caught up in sounding like next-man. Expect all of the above adjectives describing Yelawolf to be splatted all over Radioactive when it drops in September. Stay tuned for that first single...

What Is Racks on Racks on Racks?

It's rare for a completely unheard of artist to come out of the blue with a track that makes Hip Hop as a whole stop walking and acknowledge it's presence. It's rare, but not impossible, especially if you're name is @1YUNGCHRIS and you managed to entice fifteen (@cyhidaprynce, @YOUNGJEEZY, @BUNBTRILLOG, @twistagmg, @Doseworld, @bobatl, @BIGSEAN, @CORYMOMUSIC, @corygunz, @nelly_mo, @TRAEABN, @wakaflockabsm, @Wale, @RealWizKhalifa and @YOGOTTIKOM) noteworthy Hip Hop artists to join the cause on the extended remix. IDGAF what Hip Hop track I'm listenin' to, if it has a very simple beat and lyrics that aren't thought provoking in the least, it's just too much. It's like going to Coldstone and getting a Gotta Have It size, you feel me? I damn near had to delete half my hard drive to clear space for this monstrous 29.3 MB track and even more alarming, I managed to run about a mile and a half just to this remix. I exaggerate, but sill, unless it's a techno/dance track, it shouldn't be half as long as 12 mins 47 sec.

Needless to say, if I wasn't thoroughly annoyed with this track from hearing it everywhere I go, I was at the end of the extended remix. For all you folks who Googled this and are wondering what the hell "racks on racks racks on racks" means, they are referring to bundles of money in thousand dollar amounts. In other words, 1 rack is $1000, so racks on racks refers to this picture of YC below with the stacks of $1000 on top of each other...

I'll admit though, on first listen, I fully understood why the track blew up. It's a simple pleasure, even for the most sophisticated Hip Hop fan. The bouncy beat,  non-stop repeatability, creates a fun, dumbed down feel that keeps it simple, which can be good sometimes. Shoot even the producer on the track, @SONNYDIGITAL was completely unknown to most of Hip Hop until this track. Time will tell if this turns into a one hit wonder effort, but I'd rather be a has been then a never was. Peep the video, which managed to top @106andpark today...

The original track is off of the @DJGREGSTREET hosted Got Racks mixtape that dropped back in early April. Universal Records liked Yung Chris enough to sign him, so maybe there's more heat to come. Time will tell, til then feel free to catch up on all that is racks below...

Whoa...heads up y'all, you wanna hear two up and coming emcees gettin' after it, look no further. Everyone started taking notice of ATL's newest sensation, the @cyhidaprynce or CyHi Da Prynce after his stand out verse on Kanye's So Appalled, but he's showing some consistency and variety with his collaborations of late. If you're diggin' what you're hearing from Da Pryne, I'd suggest checking out his new mixtape Royal Flush that dropped in October. The sheer fact that Kanye signed him to G.O.O.D. (Getting Out Our Dreams) Music should give him all the opportunities he needs to succeed, which should start with a XXL Freshman 2011 appearance...#Prediction.

CyHi does his part on this track, but the weight is carried by Laws, who continues to be one of the best artists you don't know about. His delivery is always on point and the thought provoking metaphors he brings to the table cater to the enlightened Hip Hop fans who crave more than just a head nodding beat. Shoot he even throws in a little harmony on the hook with the "I wanna see the fans go wild, I wanna see your hands in the clouds". He embodies the throw back feeling of Hip Hop where all you needed was a mic to entertain people and that's something the game needs more of. Case in point the studio session he had with Da Prynce where they put this together rather than the cutting and pasting that goes on with most collaborations...

Some argue that Hip Hop needs more chaos and excitement, but I say Hip Hop needs more @lawshiphop..."It's My Honooor!"...be on the look out for The Dedication coming soon...
