Mike Posner...Panties...Floor

For over a week now, I've been listening to @mikeposner's new mixtape The Layover. Now I've already posted a few songs, so you might know where I'm going with this already, but there's little doubt in my mind now that The Layover should win mixtape of the year. As I'm writing this, I'm still second guessing whether I should write about other great tracks on the mixtape like Hey Lady feat Twista and A Perfect Mess (Think to This). If only I had the time, I could write a dissertation about why I think this mixtape is so great.

For starters, there is a huge void in the genre of thuggish R&B and Mikey P appropriately fills that gap with his slightly edgy lyrics and well-known Hip Hop cameos. I think of TQ when I listen to Posner and that's a good thing because it's been damn near a decade since I've heard something comparable to some of TQ's older tracks. No shit, I just counted 10 tracks on this mixtape that I've been constantly circulating on my daily playlist and to put things in perspective, the shelf life for tracks on that playlist can usually be measured in hours. If I were to give a award for best cameo verse on the mixtape, it would be between @TWISTAgmg, @MACHINEGUNKELLY and @CyHiDaPrynce's verse below. Pure thuggish, unadulterated sexiness that is more that worthy of a spot on the latest BMM.

It's been three days since @chrisbrown released his newest mixtape Boy in Detention and it already has over 110,000 downloads on datpiff. Just glancing at the production credits, I can see why everyone is flocking to download the new tape because it looks more like an album with @ROOKBEATS, @RYANMTEDDER (not to be confused with one of my favorite artits/producers/songwriters from @OneRepublic, Ryan Tedder), @9thWonderMusic, @Thabizness, @THEREALSWIZZZ and No I.D. Interesting too that most tracks on the mixtapes have Chris Breezy rapping ferociously at his own frenetic pace that he describes on Crazy and implements on First 48.

Put it this way, if you liked the way he sounded on Look At Me Now, you'll appreciate most tracks on the mixtape. Even better and probably a reflection on why it's so highly sought after, @justinbeiber drops a nniiiccee verse on the @therealbanner produced Ladies Love Me

Don't even trip, he killed that verse.

Anyways, the track below is my favorite off the mixtape and it features production from @BIGKRIT, who is steadily becoming one of my favorite artists/producers. The oriental flutes and heavy bass do more than enough to keep the track afloat. The hook by the King Remembered In Time was surprisingly awesome and really carries the track by imploring the listener to chant along. (As a side note, don't sleep on that Smokers Club tour coming this fall).

Consider this tape a present that's chalked full of high quality charity. In other words, in a death and taxes type world of certainties, free stuff like this is rare, so go cop it...#BoyInDetention

Very few Hip Hop singles can claim to be as soothing and sexy as @therealacehood's new single Body 2 Body. You may be re-reading that last sentence a few times and I don't blame you since prior to hearing this, I didn't think it was possible either. But, with the help of @rookbeats' smooth baby makin' instrumental and yet another flawless hook and bridge by @chrisbrown. The laundry list of features mechanical dummy has executed this this year is getting to be ridiculous. Doesn't it seem like he's damn near every radio hit this year? You need a hook, call CB...instant iTunes best seller.

This one shouldn't buck that trend and you can expect it to surface on iTunes shortly. It'll be the third single off his upcoming Blood, Sweat & Tears album due out August 9th. Third time's a charm and it'll follow up his two @smokedoutluger produced "street singles" Go N Get It and Hustle Hard quite nicely.

You might be wondering where Drake got the title for his new track Paris Morton Music? This "new track", is actually more of an extension of the original called Aston Martin Music off Rick Ross's new Teflon Don album. Below is a longer version of this song with the same beat. See below...

You better believe Drake didn't just pull the title out of his ass neither, the real Paris Morton is a model from Jacksonville, GA (pictured below):

Yea I'd say she's adequate enough subject material to warrant being the title of the song. It doesn't just stop at Paris either, like all good things, Mortons come in threes. Seems she didn't take all the good looks in the family as her two sisters Brittony (@BRITTONYMORTON) and Ashley Morton (@mortonashley) are just are fine as her. So now when @DRAKKARDNOIR makes a remix to Paris Morton Music and titles it The Morton Sisters, y'all will be at least a few steps ahead on the background info. Background info aside, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League (@ROOKBEATS) produced the type of beat that Drake shines all over. You know the ones where he can slow it down with an R&B hook, but still crank out a top notch verse.

And my personal favorite, where he ends the verse showing how well he knows his place in Hip Hop, being able to relate with the hardcore Hip Hop heads, but manage to not lose respect when he get's deep and at times sensitive:

I think through all the feedback Drake has wwwaaay more knowledge about what type of songs his fan base covets. Is it me or does this sound more like a track from So Far Gone than Thank Me Later? I know I know all the damn comparisons between the two albums need to be put to an end...but between this and 9 AM in Dallas, it's becoming pretty clear that Thank Me Later was him doing him regardless of what people thought.

In other words, this part two of him reeling us back in...

Throwback Thurs: "More Money Means More Dough to Blow"

With Rick Ross's new album Teflon Don coming out in a little less than two weeks and tracks from that album blowing out Gulf of Mexico style (songs don't just leak anymore #ontothenextone), it's only fitting I revisit one of my favorite tracks of his. Sure Hustlin' is going to get all the credit as the "cannonball" single that got his name in the mainstream, but this cut from his debut album Port of Miami released in 2006 is where he exploded to me.

From the looks of the tracklist, it seems like he's trying a new route on his newest album that is geared more towards reeling in some more mainstream success, rather than sticking with the sound that got him to where he's at now characterized by trap anthems like Hustlin', Speedin' and Push It. No production from JR Rotem, DJ Toomp, Cool n Dre and most notably The Runners has me a little worried about the quality of his new album. No disrespect to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League because he's proven he can bring it on more than a few occasions, but he's done some classic tracks with the aforementioned producers and the lack of their presence on his new music has me skipping lots of Rick Ross material lately. That new single with Ne-Yo was garbage in my opinion and while I do appreciate the Drake collab on the new album along with yet ANOTHER Maybach Music track, it's not looking good.

Now that all that skepticism is outta my system, let's focus on what got Rick here with Blow, where he raps over a boisterous Cool n Dre beat that can be heard for miles with a little bit of volume. These are the types of tracks that make me think of Miami hip hop and the loud organ/synth combination that has dominated that region thanks mostly to @COOLANDDRE and @THERUNNERS. The whiny synthesizers and depth of the bass are the allure to me and it helps too that William Roberts contributes some cohesive, baller status verses in sort of a talk it before you live it sort of way. Now that he's actually living it, it's cool to look back and admire the confidence, while *hoping* for future tracks that get back to this sound.

Hit the recliner and throw it way back on hot as a melonfarmer Thursday...
