Videos of the Week May 12th

When all is said and done, this past week will be known for having a bit more culture than a usual VOTW top five. Starting with the odd, but awesome pairing of Logic with Neil deGrasse Tyson, there was some nice discussion depth surrounding the lack of concept albums in Hip Hop. It was cool watching both of them share mutual respect and genuinely want to support each other in a positive way.

In the world of music, there were two noteworthy, power collaborations that rose to the top. Linkin Park's new video for Good Goodbye featured some electric (literally) dunks and then there was a whole lot of Nicki Minaj gyrating around in not a lot of clothes in the Light My Body Up video. Yes, it's getting cliche to see it, but she's a beautiful woman, I'll leave it at that. If silly is what you want you'll appreciate the new DJ Hanzel chapter. For this most recent episode he gave some DJ lessons and hilarity ensued. Rounding out this week's top five was Tinashe who hooked up with Complex to prove that sneakers are not just for guys. In the words of John Oliver...#Feminism

"I'm All Yours When You Really Wanna Take Me There"

It never crossed my mind, but a Far East Movement and marshmello collaboration makes a lot of sense. I know that probably sounds super contrived now that I have the song below as an frame of reference, but wow, what a dope track. The stop and go, choppy verses that Far East have become known for fit really well over the bouncy synths that marshemllo churns out. I'm gushing about the two headliners, but Tinashe's hook might be my favorite part of the track. Her mellow vocals cut provided the steadiness to allow the choppy verses to work. And taking it one step further, I got an intro to Chanyeol, a member of the South Korean/Chinese rap group EXO. To me, he may as well have been part of Far East Movement he fit their style so well. You know the drill, add this sucker to iTunes or Spotify before your friend tells you about it...#FrealLuv

"All My Friends Are Wasted, And I Hate This Club"

There are maybe five to ten songs a year that I get excited enough to nominate for song of the year. For me, Snakehips' track with Chance the Rapper and Tinashe deserves to be in that conversation. Coincidentally, the video for All My Friends was released back in October, but it didn't land on iTunes/Spotify until recently. But you know me, better late than never when it comes to posting a track that resonates with me.

Why do I like the track so much you ask? To put it simply it gives me the feels because it takes me back to the struggles of my early 20s. That feeling of going out to the bar every weekend and forcing yourself to be social because that's what our generation does after college on weekends is amplified to the max on the track. Add to that the settling for relationships and hook ups that are unfulfilling and you get a picture that looks exactly like what the track below describes. And boy does it describe it well with an somber, yet uplifting tone from a hook from Tinashe and stellar verse from Chance the Rapper. It's a smooth R&B track with an addicting, sing-along hook with lyrics that are easy to relate to. If you're like me and get an emotional boost from churning up the struggles of years past, this one will hit home...#AllMyFriends

"I Can Read Your Body Language"

When I see produced by Stargate, you've got my attention. They could produce for Paris Hilton and I'd probably give the track a listen. I'm stil warming up to Cashmere Cat, but combine the two powers together and you're set up for success.

When I think Kid Ink, I think of his chart topper Show Me with Chris Brown. I wouldn't quite put Body Language on the same level as his previous hit, but the Usher and Tinashe features take the track up a few levels. The mellow, bouncy beat is catchy enough to garner more than a few Top 40 spins. If you're in the mood for a catchy, chill Hip Hop track this one is going to hit the spot...#BodyLanguage
