Videos of the Week March 31st

Well, after a few weeks of non-stop music video, this week we got a large dose of variety. Random doesn't even begin to explain this week's top five. Starting with the office supplies version of Fallon, The Roots crew, and Migos performing Bad & Boujee, it was far from ordinary. Continuing that trend was Danny Brown's new Jonah Hill directed video for Ain't It Funny. Think 80s sitcom visual aesthetic with all the craziness you could imagine from two of the most out there minds in entertainment. As a final bit of randomness, there's Kelvin the Deer Whisperer who visited a zoo and introduced us to a bunch of animals he enjoys. In case you missed it, Kelvin has a special relationship with animals, so you can imagine why people would film him visiting a zoo.

Moving on from the random to the salacious with Iggy Azalea's video for Mo' Bounce. Let's just say, lot's of twerking and a whole lotta a$$. And serving as the icing on the cake for this week's visual collage was a formal introduction to Stormzy. You may have heard him on Ed Sheeran's latest remix of Shape of You, but he's a much more dynamic talent than you may have thought. Go ahead and fast forward to the eleven minute mark to hear his cover of Frank Ocean's Godspeed and you'll start buying tickets to jump on the bandwagon...#Stormzy

"Everyday I Wake Up and Feel Like It's My F'in Birthday"

While asleep at the wheel a few months back, I swung and missed on posting Boys Noize and HudMo's collaboration Birthday. It's about as celebratory of a track you'll find with excitable synths and rowdy percussion samples adding to the already jubilant energy surrounding the track. Add to that a repeatable, sing-along hook from Spank Rock and you've got yourself a single-worthy effort.

It doesn't stop there, though, as Danny Brown and Pell decided to hop on a remix of the original this week. If you know anything about Danny Brown it shouldn't be a surprise that something as carefree as Birthday would be something he'd want to donate a verse toward. I favor the original over the remix because I'm more of an instrumental purist, but I can see why you'd feel the verses added to the general excitement of the track. Despite having an on and off relationship with Danny Brown and his quirky ways, I appreciate his ability to reach across genres when collaborating. Last we saw Danny on this internet property, he was rubbing shoulders with Vampire Weekend on the Step remix. Now, he hooked up with Phantogram on the remix to Black Out Days. Really dig the chill vibe of the original, Sarah Barthel definitely leaves an impression on you with her vocals. Where the original was chill, the remix is borderline crunk thanks to a little help from Leo Justi. Feel free to jump to the 1:45 mark to hear Danny do lyrical jumping jacks all over the beat. This is a perfect example of what awesome things can happen when you inject a little Hip Hop into non-Hip Hop...#BlackOutDays

Full disclosure, I don't know much about Vampire Weekend other than that they have a really devoted following and occasionally collaborate with artists that are routinely featured on this blog. Having said that, had I heard Step when it came last March, I probably would have posted the original version of their track (below)...

Occasionally, I come across songs that I have a really hard time wrapping my mind around. When that happens, it's generally a good thing because some artist or group has ventured off the reservation into a creative area that I haven't been to before. I'm still not quite sold on Danny Brown because his delivery is downright silly sounding, but he's hard to turn off in a freakish way. Especially when contrasted with the mellow, ballad sounding instrumental of Step, the track reminded me of ODB when he went in on Mariah Carey track. The vocals are so markedly different from the beat that it's a unique listen. I wasn't a huge fan of Heems (of Das Racist) verse, but I was a big fan of how Queens' own Despot closed down the track. So much lyrical ferocity during his verse, it was perfect for the "step to my girl" vibe of the track. It's hard to find a comp to this one, but that's a big reason why I like it...#StepRemix

With @asvpxrocky's debut studio album on the horizon, there's a legitimate excitement building surrounding the release of his studio debut album LongLiveA$AP. F'in Problems made some waves on top 40 radio the past month and now Dat PMF let loose with a new cypher/freestyle featuring a whole gang of young artists. I'll put it this way, between @kendricklamar, @Yelawolf and @BIGKRIT, there's enough lyricism involved to power a small country.

Shout out to @Hit_Boy for the appropriately simple beat that allowed all artists involved to do their thing without taking the focus away. If you're curious, A$AP's debut is scheduled to hit shelves on January 15th. I'm anxiously awaiting that @BNNOfficial and @skrillex track on the album titled Wild For the Night. Chances are you'll see that at some point on this blog, stay tuned...#LongLiveASAP
