Videos of the Week August 12th

Wide range of awesomeness in this week's top five y'all. Led by the inspirational and incredibly well done video by Nike featuring Chance the Rapper. The track is called We the People and it couldn't have been any more appropriate for the Olympics. Kudos to Nike for pulling together the talent and visuals they do to produce such a well-timed video for their Unlimited Together campaign.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, lyric videos are the new low budget music video. Similar to what Thomas Jack did with Rise Up, all you need is some scenery that will amplify the tunes and you're golden. Completely switching gears from lyric videos, Gallant and Jack Garratt got to show off their skills with their in-studio performance of Janet Jackson's I Get Lonely. Gallant is such a talented vocalist, it's nuts. Speaking of talented artists, Anderson .Paak continues to do things that Hip Hop artists traditionally don't do. Like for example a three in one music video that's almost like a movie when combined together. Loved his cheesy curtains drop transitions between videos. And last but not least, your dose of comedy for the week from Seth Rogen and Jimmy Fallon. Haven't seen anyone live lip sync someone rapping before, but now I know what it sounds like thanks to Seth and the legendary Roots crew...#LipSyncBattle

Videos of the Week June 21st

Definitely not the norm putting two commercials in videos of the week, but let's just say there were a few companies who stepped it up this week in anticipation for the 17.7 overnight rating that game 7 of the NBA finals recorded. That's good for 2nd place all time for an NBA game on ABC only trailing the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics game 7 in 2010, which had an 18.2 overnight rating. Nike's voicemail bit was creative and if you're not extremely excited about Jay-Z's upcoming Magna Carta Holy Grail album, then you are no friend of mine. Pretty cool to have a company buy a million of your records before it even comes out. Too bad Billboard hit the brakes on that auto-platinum status!

In other news, more people need to hear the story of reformed pimp and author Iceberg Slim and Nardwuar is still a strange cat. Have a good weekend y'al, I'll leave you with this gem...#SignsThatYoureRatchet

Videos of the Week March 1st

First off, the whole Harlem Shake revolution has officially jumped the shark. Near the end here, we've seen some fun ones like the Miami Heat one below, but nobody can top the YouTube Easter Egg Harlem Shake. Copycat dance crazy aside, the video below by @KeeganMKey and @JordanPeele of @KeyAndPeele wins for this week's most entertaining video. When it comes to fresstyling outlandish ideas, it doesn't get any better chemistry wise than the Comedy Central duo. For all the Hip Hop heads who were salivating over the many behind the scenes shots, the video finally arrives this week. The track is literally at the basement floor of what I'm able to tolerate when it comes to dumbed down, flashy, ignorant trap muzik, but between this and Ice Cream Paint Job I simply can't turn it off when it comes on...#TrapMuzik

WRIB: Andre 3000 vs The Beatles - All Together Now

Who Rocked It Better?
Andre 3000    or   The Beatles
About two weeks ago this new version of a The Beatles classic song All Together Now surfaced on the Nike commercial below:

Pretty cool commercial spotlighting many of the highlight reel moments of Kobe's career. The intro with the 1-2-3-4 in the song as Kobe mimics the lyrics with his fingers was well done and the basis for the commercial, which was aired as the Lakers were making another run at the NBA title.

As far as the song is concerned, The Beatles track is from their Yellow Submarine album released in 1969. The song was also the postscript of the Yellow Submarine animated film and is an upbeat, unifying track lyrically. It wasn't one of the most popular Beatles songs, but fit well with the light-hearded sound on Yellow Submarine.

My only observation of note when comparing The Beatles version to the new one is that there probably couldn't have been a better Hip Hop than Three Stacks or Andre Benjamin to cover this track. He embodys the energetic, fun demeanor necessary to capture the original song's feel. I'm partial (obviously) since I grew up listening to more Outkast than I did The Beatles, but even though it's a true cover of the original song, rather than a sample, I feel like Andre rocked it better.

I like writing about uplifting tracks like this, too much music nowadays focuses on the negativity of society. Daps & lbs to Dre for giving and Urlacher quality effort in tackling this Beatles track.

Give the original and new versions a listen...
