"Never Trust a Girl at Coachella"

Maybe it's the music nerd in me, but I genuinely appreciate hearing about how songs came to be. Whether it's a friend of a friend introduction that turned into a collaboration, a song about a significant other that went bad, or in this case, a shared festival experience, I'm usually inclined to spend my time sharing stories that move me. Usually I do a quick summary, but thanks to Matoma, I can sit this explanation out...

"I played my first ever Coachella last year and it was a truly incredible experience. Between the two weekends I was doing writing sessions in L.A. and met up with Nasri from MAGIC! who I have always been a huge fan of because of their feel-good reggae-inspired music.

We wanted to write a song about Coachella since I had the moment of my life at that festival, so we came up with this story about a girl who teases with a guy’s feelings at heart at the festival. It's just a fun story about the good vibes and reckless fun that people experience at a music festival.

We finished the song really quickly and then asked D.R.A.M. if he could do a verse since we felt a rapper could take the song to exciting new heights. After hearing his verse I can from my heart say that he nailed it. I was so honoured to work with such amazing artists and hope you love this feel-good summer song!"

I usually associate Matoma with Trop House, so seeing a collabo with MAGIC! really piqued my interest. I don't have too many examples to go off of, but mixing anything reggae with Trop House is usually a good look. The subject of the track is pretty self-explanatory, but I feel like the sheer fact that they based on it meeting a girl at a music festival is a genius move. I'm apathetic about D.R.A.M.'s verse, but with all the music festivals popping up weekly, you can bet this one will have a ton of replay potential. Give it an iTunes or Spotify if you feel like beating your friends to the punch on this one before summer festival season starts...#GirlAtCoachella

Videos of the Week November 21

Following a similar trend from last week, the top 5 features a healthy mix of Hip Hip and EDM with a splash of Fallon. The splash of Fallon came with the help of the legendary Roots crew as they did their best U2 impression. It must be nice to have the talent on board to cover for U2 when they cancel on you last minute. Most late night shows would be up a creek, but for Fallon it's an opportunity to channel his inner Bono.Update: Get well soon Bono.

On the EDM front, the TommorrowWorld After Movie clearly led the way. Thirteen minutes plus of festival highlights with all the colors, fireworks, and dancing had me hooked. Kudos to Absolut for the sponsored remix video of Magic!'s addicting track Rude that was redone by Zedd. Switching gears to Hip Hop, B.O.B. and Trey Songz finally came through with some visuals for their subtly cocky anthem Not For Long. They make a mean team when they get together. And last but definitely not least, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson gave us all an in-your-face dose of throwback funk. I'm quite happy that everything from the outfits to the dancing matched the throwback sentiment of the track...#UptownFunk

Hip Hop Version of Why You Gotta Be So Cruel

Feel free and file this under the "you must be living under a rock if you haven't heard this track" category. Like many songs that ascend to the top of the US pop music chart, it can become tough to avoid certain tracks. When I say avoid, what I mean is you find yourself singing it to yourself even though you have no idea what the song is called or who it is by. Well, THAT song happens to be by up and coming Canadian band MAGIC! and their song Rude clearly has a potent combination of harmony and laid back reggae vibes. Check the original for more visual information about who they are...

Like catnip to feline, Hip Hop just couldn't stay away. Under the direction of Travis Barker, Kid Ink and Ty Dolla $ign threw together a few bars to put their own West Coast stamp on the track. The remix isn't much of a departure from the original, but if you're MAGIC!, you've got to love it when other genres start dabbling in your own homemade sauce. Led by Nasri on the vocals, The reggae fusion band must be doing something right because they have found a way to unseat Magic the Gathering for the top SEO result on Google for Magic. Feel free and check out their new album Don't Kill the Magic that has been on shelves since early June...#WhyYouGottaBeSoCruel
