"Sometimes You're Shootin' Broken Arrows in the Dark"

I'm not usually one to post podcast rips of tracks, but then again, it's not everyday that Avicii teams up with Zac Brown Band. Following the trademark "Newgrass" sound that he blazed a trail with on True, Broken Arrows is equal parts jubilant synth chords and folk vocals. To put it simply, it sounds very "Avicii" and that's very "awesome." You better believe I'll be impatiently awaiting the official release of this track because it just dumped an entire tank of jet fuel on the already flaming excitement I had for Avicii's upcoming album Stories. Apologies in advance to everyone at work tomorrow for attempting in vain to subdue my excitement for this track as I pretend to sing it with headphones on at my desk...#BrokenArrows

Dillon's New Mixtape is Pure Fire

On the heels of an extremely successful album, Dillon Francis is back at it with a new EP/mixtape. Appropriately titled This Mixtape is Fire, the EP is going to be chalked full of fresh new Moombahton. Exhibit #1 is below in the form of the boomy, speaker reverberating Bruk Bruk (I Need Your Lovin). The track is more or less synth driven rowdy tribal music. Similar to the way Major Lazer brings in reggae and dancehall samples into their music, Dillon is a pro at weaving together dramatic drops and quick drum builds. It's a shame we'll have to wait until August 14th for the EP to drop, but the good news is there are Calvin Harris and Skrillex collabos on the way...#ThisMixtapeIsFire

Curiosity Yelled BINGO!

Today was the second consecutive Pride festival that I've attended in SF. You better believe it was off the chain this year with the same sex marriage legislation that passed through the Supreme Court this week. As hundred of people marched down Market Street with thousands of onlookers, I couldn't help but take notice of the electronic heavy tunes being pumped out of the majority floats passing through. Much of the music sounded a lot like the Bingo Players' new one Curiosity. Marked by upbeat, bouncy synths, the track mixes vibrant chords with a steady diet of piano to create a fun track. Word has it the track was premiered at EDC last weekend, but if you're looking to cop it, it'll be arriving at the e-store of your choosing tomorrow...#Curiosity

Thomas Jack x Felix Jaehn Trop House Vol 8

The Trop House mixes keep getting better and better as more DJs continue collaborating with Thomas Jack. For number eight, Thomas Jack enlisted the help of up and comer Felix Jaehn to weave together a full house of all your favorite new house tracks. You'll hear goodies like Felix's remix of Ed Sheeran's Photograph, Oliver Heldens' Shades of Grey, The Magician's Together and Robin Schulz's Headlights to name a few. The key takeaway here is there's a lot of new House music that you probably haven't heard yet and it's delivered in a stream of consciousness that will allow you to press play and walk away. It's interesting to note that the mix is less "tropical" sounding than many of the previous mixes, but if you're unhappy about that then you're splitting hairs at this point. Whatever it is, cooking, cleaning the house or even hosting people, give this one a full hour when there's room for some background tunage...#TropHouse

Videos of the Week June 26th

It's been a long while since I've gotten as much novel entertainment out of one week of videos. I found it extremely hard to narrow down a top five, which resulted in a list filled to the brim with quality. Like for example, when are you going be privy to watching Katie Couric interview Skrillex for 15 mins? Or how about watching NBA prospects dramatically read Drake lyrics and try to keep a straight face? Or how about the icing on the cake, how about Jimmy Fallon finishing Arnold Schwarzenegger's sentences? Nothing is greater than watching the Terminator giggle like a school girl.

If you were wondering how much Thomas Jack loves his dog Manny, you're absolutely in luck. Yes, Manny can sing too, so don't miss out on that. Finally, if you've every wondered what looks like or how well Diplo plays the guitar, we've got some of that this week too. Such a chill vibe on Lean On, I'm not sure I'll ever get sick of that one...#Fallon

"All I Ask is Keep it 8 More Than 92 With Me, 100"

It's been more than a minute since I've posted a slow, lyrical Hip Hop track. Truth be told I largely don't have the patience anymore for half the nonsense that 99% of Hip Hop artists have to say these days, BUT I will make an exception for two of my favorites, The Game and Drake. For a bit of background on the track, check out the behind the scenes in Compton for the upcoming video for 100...

On the track you can expect a very laid back duo casually trading bar after bar with one another for a full five minutes. They sport that smooth West Coast gangsta delivery that feels tougher than it sounds. For the Game fans out there, you can continue to look forward to The Documentary 2 in less than a week on June 30th while you F5 the internet and impatiently wait for the video to drop...#TheDocumentary2

"I Think You're Always in Two Minds"

Any day of the week, count me in on whatever new track Nero is releasing. It's been painfully awesome getting fresh new tidbits from their upcoming Between II Worlds album over the past year. I enjoyed Satisfy and Dark Skies, but after hearing Two Minds, I have a new favorite.

Their new one is as boomy as you'd expect and it continues their unique style that walks a thin line between dark and melodic. Whatever you do, don't give up on the track after listening to the first minute. Around the 1:07 mark, there's a speaker thumping drum and bass chord progression that will absolutely have you shakin' your ass. It's absurd, but we all still have to wait until late August to hear Nero's new album in it's entirety. Can't wait to hear the eight or so songs that still have yet to be released...#TwoMinds

"I'm Feeling Fresher Than the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"

Over the past four years Timeflies has been a mainstay on this portion of the internet. Whether it's posting their consistently entertaining #TimefliesTuesday tracks, a review of their concert or a new single, Cal and Rob never stop grinding. Last spring they dropped a top 10 Billboard album with After Hours. Now a little over a year later they've got plans for new album and here's their lead single Worse Things Than Love featuring the up and coming Natalie La Rose...

It's a bit of an upbeat, poppy ballad, but has some serious potential to do some damage on top 40 radio. Between Cal and Natalie, you're not going to find many tracks with as much vocal talent. Timeflies will be hard pressed to top their last album, but I'd chalk this up as a win in getting the positive momentum rolling for their new yet-to-be-titled album...#WorseThingsThanLove

"Y'all Don't Really Know What You're Aimin' At"

It simply does not get any better than this when it comes to new music on a Monday. It has been an entire decade since Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda (aka Fort Minor) came through with one of my favorite all time albums in The Rising Tied. If you're wondering whether he's lost a step as a solo artist, fear not, just press play below and give a listen to Welcome...

The good news is you can go grab Welcome for free via Fort Minor's newly revamped website. If you're like me, you're wishing with all the good karma you have in your being that Welcome is the gateway to a new full-length album. Unfortunately, it sounds like this beautiful new track that focuses on Hip Hop's lack of love for him as a solo artist is more of a stand-alone single than a lead single. The sound of the track is clearly driven by years worth of emotion and it comes across through a mix of lyrical ferocity and jubilant synths that quietly ride out the track in a surprisingly powerful way. As I'm writing this, I'm watching Mike's live stream via Periscope and despite the fact that his new track may not fit in on Hip Hop or Rock stations, it will definitely have a place on every mix I burn in the next month. For the love of all that is holy, keep the new music coming!!...#Welcome

"I Told My Heart That It Was Just a Summer Thing"

Despite the fact that EDM has become the dominant genre of music posted on this blog, there's a part of me that wishes EDM could stay more specialized. What I mean by that is all too often pop music gets labeled as EDM just because a well known DJ's name is on it. Case in point, Afrojack's latest single SummerThing! featuring Mike Taylor. It's a bubbly, repeatable top 40 track that has a dash of synths after what some might call a "drop." I've raved about a lot of Afrojack tracks in the past and he deserves the utmost respect for being one of a handful of DJs that can make everything from heartfelt ballads to club anthems, but this one is not for me. I cringe at the thought of how much top 40 radio is going to wear this one out and the fact that I'm not a fan of it before it hits radio is not a good sign. I get what they're trying to do with the whole breezy summer vibe, but it's like a light beer than has under 100 calories, just a little too light for me...#SummerThing

Ed Sheeran's Photograph Goes Deep House

Riding high on the success of his most recent remix of OMI's Cheerleader, Felix Jaehn is back with another cooled out Deep House remix. This time he transformed Ed Sheeran's Photograph into a melodic, lounge quality hit. If you missed the original version from Sheeran's modern day classic album X, here's a quick recap...

Whether it's Deep House or Tropical House, the over-arching "chill" House movement is getting better and better. The bubbly chord progression on the remix below is about as relaxing as it gets when combined with the lethal vocals of Ed Sheeran. If you're on a beach somewhere celebrating Father's Day weekend, then this will be a perfect addition to that poolside playlist...#Photograph

Videos of the Week June 19th

Definitely not the usual week for videos with a grab bag of variety being the theme of the week. Is it me or are lyric videos now a pre-requisite to the making of actual videos? Whatever the case, the production quality for lyric videos have gotten a huge boost, making for really entertaining watches. Case in point the use of perspective on the printed lyrics of Eminem's latest track Phenomenal off the Southpaw Soundtrack.

If you're not into reading, Big Sean put together a whole 13 minute documentary surrounding his latest Dark Sky Paradise album. On the real music video front, Travie McCoy and Sia came through with a deserted Western themed movie for Golden. I'm not a country guy, but Timeflies did their thing when they flipped Sam Hunt's House Party into a listenable mix. And for those of you who came for some awkward and a dash of silly, Alan Rickman and Jimmy Fallon took in some helium and hilarity ensued...#Rickman

Bassnectar & G Jones Shed Light on the Mystery Spot

I'm a little ashamed, but until today I didn't know Bassnectar was from Santa Cruz, California. Having been to Santa Cruz a few times over the past year, I had no idea there was a place near there where unexplained things happen. According to Bassnectar, there's a "mysterious place in the Santa Cruz mountains where there are these gravity defying rooms and all these unexplainable natural phenomena inside the building." Oh yea? Feel free and travel down the rabbit hole I just went down in learning about this real life place.

The best part of the track is that it features G Jones, a fellow Santa Cruz native. If you were to imagine a track about a place that didn't have gravity, it would sound as etherial as the appropriately titled track below. There's a heavy dose of drum and bass to complement the quirky synths. The Mystery Spot is one of five new tracks being pre-released from Bassnectar's upcoming 16 track, full-length Into the Sun album. For those of you keeping track at home, this will be the eleventh, count that ELEVENTH studio album from the electronic heavyweight that is Lorin Ashton...#IntoTheSun

RL Takes Scylla From Great to Greater

You have to have some serious audacity to reimagine your own music when it was successful in the first place. Shoot, Avicii made it look easy with his entire album of re-takes from his True album. Enter RL Grime who felt the need to let loose a free-take in anticipation for his upcoming SummerStage concert in September. Before you go nuts over the remix, take a minute to enjoy the visuals from the original below...

It's not a huge departure from the original, but the drop is every bit more epic. Instead of a predictably ebb and flow of synths, the drop is choppy and a bit more energetic. I'll put it this way, if you liked the original, there's a more than 70% chance you'll like this version just as much. Comparing this to the original is like choosing between strawberry shortcake or a strawberry smoothie. Both are great, it just depends on what you're in the mood for...#Scylla

Ratatat is Everything But Rough Around the Edges

Ah yes, fooled by the ironic song title once again! It's as if Ratatat wanted us all to notice the name of their new track, scoff, then proceed to listen to one of the smoothest cuts they've ever created. Needless to say, Abrasive is anything but abrasive sounding...

You might be wondering why in hell the word magnifique kept popping up throughout their extremely well executed stop motion video? Well, that happens to the name of their upcoming album that will be hitting shelves on July 17th. In my eyes, the word is a much better place with Ratatat making new music. Now if we could only get a tour so that I can experience their one of a kind live show all again with a full album's worth of new material...#Magnifique

"Get Drunk on the Good Life, I'll Take You to Paradise"

As promised a few weeks back when we posted The Chainsmokers most recent remix of Life of Dillon's Overload, here comes a fresh new single. On first listen you might think to yourself "man this is different from their usual" progressive house sound," but I'm not so sure it's that big of a departure.

In fact, I'd challenge you to go back and listen to their entire catalog of stellar remixes that include a lot of Indie tracks with a similarly chill vibe. Sure Roses might come off a bit more "Future Bass-y", as the kids like to call it, but mellow and heavy isn't something that's new to Alex and Drew. Yes I did just notice that rhymed as I wrote it, so I'm gonna go with it. Key takeaway here is that The Chainsmokers continue to make great music with a variety of sounds, tempos and vibes, which makes for a fun experience when unwrapping one of their new tracks. Check this one out on iTunes when it comes out at midnight y'all...#Roses

Orange is the New Black Gets the EDM Treatment

The phrase "perfect timing" comes to mind when thinking about Sullivan King's electronic mix of the Orange is the New Black. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the show, but I live with someone who is, which means I know a lot about the show and constantly hear the theme song. It just so happens the new season of Orange is the New Black was released early this week, encouraging millions to binge watch their way through the 13 episodes. If you haven't heard the original version of the show's theme song, it's by Regina Spektor and is called You've Got Time (below)...
If you're thinking the theme song is a little weird, you're right, but it fits the general oddball vibe of the show. I can't say Dubstep is the path that I would have chosen for the remix, but it's an interesting take on the track. I like that the catchy opening lines are still featured in the remix, but it's such a departure away from the original that at times it's hard to tell what track is being remixed. Those who are Orange fans may like this one a bit more than me, but I respect Sullivan a healthy hack at it...#OINTBSeason3

"Oh This is Crazy, Ever Since I Caught Your Eye"

My affinity for chopped up Hip Hop is what lead me down the path of becoming a big fan of Keys N Krates. The Canadian trio have a distinct style that usually includes steep, bass heavy drops and high pitched vocal samples. Save Me is definitely in the neighborhood of that description with Katy B chipping in the vocals this time around. They do such a good job of varying the sound by adding and subtracting elements from the beat post-drop. If you're a Spotify user, you're in luck because you can stream it exclusively here. For those of you eager to cop it, you'll need to wait patiently until it drops on June 23rd via Dim Mak Recordsc...#SaveMe

Videos of the Week July 12th

An overall fun week for videos with Major Lazer clearly leading the way with two more videos for tracks from Peace is the Mission. They have their own awesome graphical style for lyric videos that really works for them. When you can do that good of a job with animation, who needs a high budget video with high paid actors?

In other news, Zedd's Beautiful Now video leans more on the serious side, but the uplifting visuals were appreciated. If you're a fan of the NFL Bad Lip Reading, then you'll get a kick out of Jimmy Fallon's Celebrity Whispers. Who knew it could also be fun when you do it with celebrities on the red carpet? Closing out the week in a strong way is Cal from Timeflies who stepped up his #TimefliesTuesday game this week when he tackled OMI/Felix Jaehn's Cheerleader and Fetty Wap's Trap Queen. Freestyling on command is a unique talent and Cal does it effortlessly, which is fun to watch...#Cheerleader

"We're Livin' Out the Back of the Car"

There's being poor and then there's being proud to be poor. RAC's newest one with Nate Hendricks falls under the latter of those two with a jubilant pop anthem about living out the back of the car. In sort of a Indie pop sort of way, Back of the Car makes for a perfect road trip track. For over four minutes you feel like they're saying the exact same phrase, but it's such a cool mix of chill and happy that it's easy to give it a pass. For me, it's the acoustic guitar during the hook that pushes the track toward it's infectious heights. Windows down, rocking this one the way to Happy Hour tomorrow...make it happen...#BackOfTheCar

"I'm Comin' Through Like It's '03"

It's as if Chuck Inglish just mentally opened up my high school year book. Everything from camera phones, to burning cds, to two-way paging...there's a lot of nostalgia packed into 2003. And, just as you would expect, there's a whole lot of speaker rattling bass to go along with the never ending millenial memories. I can't say I like it as much as I did Damage, but if both were on an EP together, I'd be more likely to cop it. Speaking of which, can't wait for the new album...#EverybodysBigBrother

"Some Hearts They Burn Like a Wildfire"

In the same way I find the Haim sisters' music mesmerizing, Scavenger Hunt has this fun, throwback sound to their music that resonates with me. It sounds like it's straight out of the 80s, but I was born in the 80s, so you could argue I grew up on pop music that sounded just like this. If you need a quick refresher on Scavenger Hunt, give a quick look at their recent featurette that was created to hype their upcoming EP...

Wildfire represents everything I remember about Scavenger Hunt when I posted their first single Lost. It's easy listening, light and catchy as hell. It's not usually what I post on the site, but that's the point. The second my posts become predictable on a daily basis, you guys probably won't be finding this space on the internet as fun as it used to be, so cheers to broadening your horizons tonight kind listener...#Wildfire

"I Can't Feel My Face When I'm With You"

A nice big slice of pop funk is the best fuel for kick starting a week. Leave it to The Weeknd to summon his inner Michael Jackson for a catchy new tune that was crafted specifically for radio consumption. The mix of a sing-songy verses, a pinch of falsetto, and an addictive hook are what allow this one to be elevated to legendary comparisons. It's safe to say Abel is officially on a roll after coming through with Can't Feel My Face on the heels of his recent single The Hills. He's living proof that dirty R&B is alive and well in a time where rhythm and blues is more the exception than the norm...#CantFeelMyFace

"I'ma Build a Whole House on That Ass, I Swear"

T-Pain has made such an effort to get away from autotune that it's refreshing to hear him go back to what got him to where he's at now. Better yet, how about a booty shaking, future club anthem with Juicy J? Yessir, sign me up for that because it's just as vulgar and salacious as you'd expect from the dynamic duo. I can already picture the real video, presumably in a strip club with plenty of paper currency flying around like paper airplanes. Oh Hip Hop, there are some grimy things that will never change about you and I will always love and hate you for it, even though you always #MakeThatShitWork.

"I'm Holding On to Everyone Good"

Recently it seems like Tropical House has been the label that everyone associates with any kind of mellow house music. Take for example the new single from Austria's own 17 year old prodigy Filous. The acoustic guitar led beat is far from anything tropical sounding, but it still gets bucketed in with Tropical House. Maybe the genre of Trop House movement is more about the relaxed mind state you're in as a listener rather than similarities in the sound of the track? Whatever the case, How Hard I Try is such a cooled out track, it's a perfect track to zone out to. Shout out to James Hersey who is becoming a stand out name in the world of chill house and look out for that Dawn EP coming soon...#HowHardITry

Videos of the Week June 5th

The top 5 this week featured a large dose of EDM, an interesting cover and a whole lot of silliness. Leading the way was Ed Sheeran's cover of Fetty Wap's Trap Queen that completely came out of left field. Who would have known such a bouncy track could hold up acoustically? On the EDM tip Eric Prydz came through with some crazy visuals with the help of Tron producer GMUNK and his 3D LED sugar cube. Crookers and Jeremih also concocted an interesting story to their latest single I Just Can't.

As fas as shenanigans, the Late Night hosts were all over that. Led by Fallon and Jason Statham's game of slap jack and the always funny mean tweets from Kimmel, there was plenty to laugh at. Some of those mean tweets took the gloves off man! The tweets are funny and all, but the reactions are why you keep watching...#NBAMeanTweets

"I'm Hotter Than Honolulu, Glory Unto You"

If you've been wondering where the hungry lyricist within Lil Wayne has been hiding, he was unleashed this week. In what can only be explained as a fierce cypher, Tunechi went nuts on the mic for a full five minutes. With quoteables oozing out of each bar, one thing is abundantly clear...he was out to make a statement. Feel free and celebrate it as the first single off his upcoming Free Weezy Album.

...and yes it was released via that new music service that starts with a T, but it will not be mentioned by name on this blog. It's admirable that the service is trying to get better compensation for artists, but they're going about it the wrong way. A better sound quality isn't an order winning characteristic in the world of music streaming and unfortunately it's difficult for us common folk to empathize with the co-owners of the service who don't necessarily need to get richer in our eyes. Give me a better value prop for using the service and change your marketing up because I as a consumer will be much more likely to feel bad for the struggling artist trying to make ends meet than a group of multi-millionaires trying to sell me a music service...#My2Cents

Overloading on Life with The Chainsmokers

Ah yes, the remix that's been over two weeks in the making with so much potential. Sure, The Chainsmokers have already publicly co-signed their Acoustic House Disruptor label mates from the UK, but imagining their two styles mixed on one track is exciting. The interesting thing about the remix is not at all what I expected. It's mellow, chill and takes on the slow tempo of what the kids are calling "love trap" these days. Sometimes when a track doesn't fit what you expect, there's a tendency to be let down. I'm not going down that path tonight because I appreciate Alex and Drew branching out to the point where it's hard to predict what's coming next. Speaking of which, two more weeks until they release a new track...#GetPumped

HudMo's New Album Lantern Keeps Getting Better

If you were to ask me, I'd opine that Hudson Mohawke's Scud Books is reason enough to purchase his entire new album Lantern. Sure, Very First Breath is also pretty dope, but you all know by now that Scud Books was one of those "you had me at hello" type tracks. The beauty of expectations is that when they've already been satisfied everything else is icing on the cake. So let's have a taste of the smooth buttercream icing below in the form of Indian Steps.

Before you press play know that his new one featuring the gentle vocals of Antony is not going to be what you expect. What I mean by that is generally HudMo comes through with sound that I can only describe as grandiose, meaning it's complex, yet intricate and has the amplitude to fill an entire room. Instead, Indian Steps is a gentle electronic ballad that feels more like a lullaby than the usual party starter. If you're looking for versatility, this one will impress you as much as it did myself. Man, it's going to be a long two weeks waiting for his new album to drop...#Lantern

"Lights, Camera, Action When I Walk Through the Door"

Man, generally Monday's sole purpose is to get out of the way so that we all can be one step closer to Friday. Today, though, we received a rowdy Trap banger from A-Trak, AraabMuzik and Ape Drums that made this Monday all that easier to get through. Action is as heavy as you'd expect with a Hip Hop sample that invites you to bounce along. To say the trio made a star studded trio is an understatement, Action is a great example of how high the ceiling of a track can be when you've got three of best most talented Trap artists in the same studio. Best part about it is the track is completely free to download via Soundcloud. This one is going to be on heavy repeat throughout the week for our team, so don't hesitate to drop and drop this guy to your newest playlist that could use a fresh party starter or two...#LightsCameraAction
