"We Might As Well Be Lovers of the Sun"

First it was bluegrass and EDM, now it's country western flavored electronica? Not sure I saw this coming, but I can't say I dislike it. I will compliment Sam Martin for his soothing, folk-y vocals that match the twangy guitars in the background. Leave it to David Guetta to continue stretching the boundaries of what's been done in a genre that he largely helped popularize in the states.

Ask yourself, would you be surprised if Avicii produced the track below? The common sense answer to that question should be an emphatic NO because he did in fact produce the single. The track below and Shot Me Down will appear on his new Lovers of the Sun EP that just so happened to hit iTunes today. Can't beat four song EPs that bring the heat like D Guetta's new one...#LoversOfTheSun

Echoes Revisits Band of Horses' The Funeral

When Kid Cudi remixed Band of Horses back in the day, I gained an appreciation for their folk rock appeal. That was way back in 2008 and since then, Band of Horses has continued on to a point where they were nominated for a Grammy in 2010. At no point did I think to myself, man their music would sound great with a little bit of drum and bass added to it. To that point, credit Echoes for doing an amazing job remixing their first ever single The Funeral.

I'll admit, it took about a minute ten seconds for the remix to get into gear, but Lexi Norton knocked it out of the park. Where the original was slow and melodic, the remix is harmonious and energetic with the drum and bass leading the way. The chopped up vocals fit well with the beat and make it a completely different track than the original. To be honest, it's going to be quite a while before I get sick of this one, it's got serious playlist staying power...#ReadyForTheFuneral

The Shadow of the Sun Goes on an Adventure

It's been months since I posted something new from Adventure Club, making their new remix of Max Elto's Shadow of the Sun more than a little timely. Had I heard of Max Elto? Nope, but what I now know is that is he's a great vocalist. Check the original version of his ballad below...

Like only Adventure Club can, they took the essence of Max's original track and crafted an EDM story around it. The track is so perfect for their style isn't disgusting. The stop and go Dubstep they infused into the original boosts the track to a different level. Don't expect a crazy club track when you press play, this type of EDM is cooled out and meant for relaxing. Great track to zone out to after a long day at work...#ShadowOfTheSun

Videos of the Week June 27th

Lots of excitement around the globe with World Cup in full swing and that includes the former soccer doormats of the world, the good ol' USA. Enter Lupe Fiasco who just so happens to have a super inspirational new track that could be the rallying cry for the USA's run through the lose or go home tournament that starts next week. In the world of EDM, Steve Aoki has been making a lot of noise of late, both through his music and through his new video for Free the Madness. I'm still a bit skeptical of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles upcoming movie, but in Megan Fox...err...I mean Michael Bay we trust? Please don't mess up bringing to life the actions figures of my childhood.

If you're wanting some random entertainment, check out some old folks being introduced to Google Glass. Man I hate that one day I'm going to be that out of touch with technology. And in case you're still not sure what in the heck turning down for what means, how about asking random people on the streets? It really is amazing how much lyrics sometimes don't make sense...at...all...#TurnDownForWhat

Walter Mitty's Step Out Gets an EDM Makeover

Anybody go see that Walter Mitty movie with Ben Stiller? I can't say I have seen it, but if you did, you may recognize Jose Gonzalez's song Step Out. Press play below if you aren't familiar...

It's been a minute since The Chainsmokers came out with a new remix and I'm happy to say they did their job by introducing me to yet another new track. Have they sold out you ask? Well, seven figures changes a lot of people and I'm not about to say they have changed because the made an appearance on American Idol. I'm sure they're very aware of their fame now and like anybody who all the sudden doesn't have to worry about money anymore, there's going to be an adjustment. I've been fortunate to have a few back and forths with the duo and I'll always maintain that they seem like good dudes who have a uniquely personal and quirky way they go about sharing their music. As a result, I'm always going to appreciate their come up. Whatever happens, keep doing what you're doing Alex and Drew. Your music and approach are a breath of fresh air, so don't listen to all the noise, just keep making great music and that's all that will matter...#StepOut

"Don't You Dare Come Crawling Back"

From the moment I heard Taio Cruz's first album Departure back in 2008, I knew I was a fan. Back then it seemed like listenable R&B grew on trees and now it's like trying to find a cassette player at a house party. What I'm now appreciating more and more about his music is how much it has branched off into different styles. Take for example, his new Dr. Luke produced single Don't You Dare. Back in the day I wouldn't have thought he'd be capable of a slightly acoustic, bluegrass-y dance hit. Now, thanks much in part to Avicii, there's clearly an opportunity for success when mixing the two genres. The track feels like a mid-tempo ballad, but when the beat picks up for the hook, it feels like a club-friendly sing along. While this is a no-brainer top 40 hit, I see many EDM remixes on the horizon...#DontYouDare

Collin McLoughlin Plants His Own White Flag

Generally, when an artists remixes a classic track they find a way to incorporate parts of the original track. Usually it's the vocals, sometimes it's the beat, but on rare occasions, it's just the lyrics. And here's where Collin McLoughlin takes a left turn when he sees everyone else take a right. He not only produced the easy-listening, drum and bass flavored instrumental, he took it a step further by doing the vocals too.

Don't get it twisted, Dido's vocals are off the charts and while Collin did his thing, trying to equal her original effort wouldn't be a worthwhile task. Still, his version succeeds in its simplicity and is a refreshing take on a classic track. If you take nothing away from this post, know that Collin McLoughlin is a multi-talented dude...more talented than both your favorite DJ and vocalist...#FreeDownload

Calvin Harris Brings the Heat on C.U.B.A.

Boy oh boy, did Calvin Harris bring his A game on his new single C.U.B.A. No need for vocals, he was able to take us on a roller coaster of build ups and drops that doesn't need vocals to be entertaining. The post-drop synth work he puts in is worthy of a South Florida club. The rhythms give off a guitar feel, but the crispness sticks with you. Man, if you thought his last album was great, he's building a hell of a follow up. When you add it to his already successful single Summer, it's got the makings of something everyone will be talking about...#CUBA

Dave Edwards Takes The One to Another Level

About once a month, I end up kicking myself when I find a new song and end up liking it a lot more than I did on first listen. That was the case with Dave Edwards remix of The Knocks' The One. I've had the Soundcloud link open in my browser for a few days now and it hasn't gotten the nod yet on a post despite the fact that I still haven't closed the tab. Sometimes you just gotta let it simmer a bit before it tastes good.

If you haven't heard of The Knocks, you need to get acquainted with their music. Below is a good starting point as it's their original version of The One featuring Sneaky Sound System...

For the record, this is now the fourth time Dave Edwards has remixed The Knocks. At this point, it's safe to say they complement each other well stylistically. In summary, Dave took the already great original version of The One and poured gasoline on with an injection of in-your-face synths that are capable of lighting up a dance floor. Best part about it, you can cop it for free at the cost of a Facebook like...#TheOne

"Your Love It Makes Me Stronger"

Anybody else in the mood for some soulful deep house? With Duke Dumont's heavy synths leading the way, Won't Look Back lives up to the billing. The track alternates between sassy pop vocals and funky rhythms that are just as uplifting as they are easy listening.

Chalk this up as the third solid single from Duke Dumont in recent memory. I won't go as far as saying it's as good as either Need You 100% or I Got U, but if Won't Look Back is the worst of the three and the first two were #1 dance singles in the US, I'll take that any day of the week. Cheers to hoping a full length album comes together in the near future...#WontLookBack

Videos of the Week June 20th

This week brought a little bit of funny, a little bit of entertainment, and a dash on nostalgia. The funny came from Ice Cube's angry serious messages on Kimmel and some hilarious Harry Potter trivia on Fallon. The entertainment came from the sheer jubilation of Coldplay's Sky Full of Stars video where they took over the streets of Sydney, Australia and the X Ambassadors/Jamie N Commons video for their white hot track Jungle. Finishing up on a nostalgic note was the montage of Michael Jackson clips that were put together for his latest posthumous single Love Never Felt So Good. So much classic, much dance moves, always going to miss the King of Pop...#LoveNeverFeltSoGood

Steve Aoki is the Hip Hop EDM Bridge

Well shoot, Lil Jon already broke the ice this week, so how bout another EDM track with a splash of Hip Hop. Who would have though we'd ever hear Machine Gun Kelly vocalizing a bit? Man, he sounds like he could be a Mike Shinoda replacement if Linkin Park was ever down a man.

Like most Steve Aoki tracks, this one goes balls to the wall throughout the majority of the song. It's upbeat, lose yourself type party music that is destined to be played loudly. Selfishly, I really hope the whole Hip Hop EDM blending continues because I miss hearing good Hip Hop. If I can't get really listenable Hip Hop anymore, then I'll continue to keep hoping the two genres blend into each other so that I can have my cake and eat it too...#FreeTheMadness

"We Are Where the Bright Lights Glow"

Looking for a storybook EDM track? Look no further than Syn Cole's new one Bright Lights. It has a really catchy harmony, but get's after it with a crisp chord progression. Nowadays EDM tracks seem to be getting more and more uptempo between drops, but me, I like a track that can play the whole spectrum. It will tease you, it will tantalize, but it will also hit the gas when it needs an injection of energy. Jury is still out whether or not this Syn Cole fellow will be able to live up to being Avicii's protege, but Bright Lights is certainly cut from the same cloth, which makes it hard for me to not be optimistic for his future...#SynCole

"Bend Ova Make Ya Knees Touch Ya Elbows"

When I think of people reinventing themselves, I think of baseball pitchers who may have lost a few MPH on the fastball and need to be crafty to succeed in the twilight of their career. C.C. Sabathia comes to mind as a pitcher who sees the end of the tunnel coming and is being forced to use new tricks to get hitters out. What does this have to do with a new Lil Jon song you ask? Well, after the Crunk movement died down over the past decade, he has more or less faded into the background. Now, all the sudden, trap music is becoming huge, which has kicked open the door of opportunity for the King of Crunk. Now, his style of yelling over hype beats fits again and he's finding a way to jump back into the limelight.

Make no bones about it, his new single featuring Tyga and production from DJ Kronic will be a huge hit. It has an unabashed energy about it that sucks you in from the rowdy beginning. The yelling is just catchy and repeatable enough to embed itself in your brain. Sometimes I toss around the term "summer anthem" lightly, but Bend Ova is about as sure of a bet as Brazil or Argentina making the world cup final...#BendOva

Ma$e and Timbo Make Me Miss Hip Hop

Every now and again, there's a Hip Hop track that takes me back to the days of the Millenium when great Hip Hop used to grow on trees. You had countless great producers making even the most average rapper a superstar. One of them who made a living off of it was Timbaland who has about as distinct of a sound in music. At least once a year I find myself wondering what would have happened if he and Aaliyah would have continued making great music together.

While the new song by up and comer Jo'zzy isn't exactly a substitute for anything Aaliyah did, the sheer fact that Ma$e and Timbaland got on a track together drummed up the Hip Hop nostalgia all over again. If you're wanting just the dessert portion, feel free to fast forward to the 1:45 mark where Ma$e drops a memorable verse. It's not a hall of fame effort, but there's clearly something still there talent wise. I really hope he continues his way back into the limelight and a couple hall of fame producers come out of the woodwork to support him in his conquest. Even if he doesn't fully make it back, I can't complain, I'm satisfied with the small slice of the past below...#TrynaWife

Dr. Dre and Jay Z Rule the Jungle

Newly minted billionaire Dr. Dre is at it again. He's used some interesting ingredients to create the perfect hype storm. First, let's take a dope Hip Hop sounding track that not a lot of people know about featuring an Indie rock group and a British folk singer and get Jay Z to add a verse to it. Then, leverage the World Cup's massive audience to sell more and more headphones with this ad. Sound like a good plan?

Welp...if I'm either the X Ambassadors or Jamie N Commons, I'm smiling all the way to the bank when I get wind of the Dr. Dre tweet below...
In case you haven't seen the commercial yet when watching the World Cup, check out Jay Z's verse that is as good as advertised below...

Lost in all of this is the fact that Alex da Kid is still a genius. Why you ask? Well, the X Ambassadors are signed to KIDinaKORNER Records, who also have The Imagine Dragons and Skylar Grey on roster. Bet you can't guess who is the brain child behind KIDinaKorner? He needs to get more credit than he gets because he has been behind so much great much that it's getting a little ridiculous that he isn't a household name. Check out the original version of Jungle below and keep your head up for the full remix because it's coming sooner than later...#Jungle

Hold On, Bassnectar's Noise vs Beauty is Coming

We're now less than two weeks away from Bassnectar's new album Noise vs Beauty and below is another good reason why you might consider checking it out. Hold On features the melodic vocals of TURSI and is about as euphoric as it gets for EDM. The high pitched synths mixed with low bass give off a dreamy vibe that will no doubt provide the slice of heaven you'd want from soothing dance music. Better yet, it's a brief 2 min and 39 secs, which means you won't have to play the fast forward to the good parts, jump-around game. Versatility is what Bassnectar is all about and his last three singles are proof...#NoisevsBeauty

Videos of the Week June 13th

So the Dumb and Dumber To trailer has been out for less than 72 hours and it has almost 17 million views already. Ya think people are excited for the resurrection of Harry and Lloyd? I'm going to try my best to remain skeptical since sequels usually fall flat on their face, but if there were ever a duo that could pull it off, Jeff Bridges and Jim Carrey would be the ones. Speaking of resurrection, Dave Chappelle is back and getting read to perform for a week in New York. It was fascinating hearing him talk about how he abruptly quit his television show and subsequently, millions of dollars.

Just in time for the World Cup comes the Coca-Cola sponsored video for David Correy and Aloe Blacc's The World is Ours. I watches a little bit of Brazil's opening game and they seemed to poised to make a run for the cup behind Neymar. If the first trailer didn't make you laugh, have no fear, between the Psy/Snoop Dogg Hangover video and SNL's Vanessa Bayer giving dating advice to Drake, you should find at least a few laughs in this week's top 5...#Hangover

ZHU Continues to Own the Dancefloor

Man, I'm really starting to like the funk coming from the direction of ZHU. He's went from mysterious to consistently dope in a matter of weeks it seems. For his latest creation, he flipped Lana Del Rey's West Coast into dance masterpiece. The remix takes the original to a place it never could have reached. Particularly, around the 2:50 mark when the beat hits full stride. For this of you who are unfamiliar with the name ZHU and his signature three white line logo, you should probably hope on the boat because it's starting to fill up...#ZHU

Nero Makes Drive Fast Music

I can't say enough good things about Nero. I loved their debut album and I'm anxiously anticipating their sophomore album. I can't say for sure whether or not the rough demo below for their track Touch You will be on their next album, but that doesn't make it any less awesome. The rolling drum and bass they feature on almost every single track has this irresistible "drive fast" affordance. Unfortunately, since it's a non-finished version, there are no vocals, but the crisp rhythms carry it well beyond the dopeness threshold. Their streak of greatness continues, let's all collectively hope there's more where this came from...#TouchYou

Tropical House Starts With Thomas Jack

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Tropical House starts with Thomas Jack. His new strain of EDM is so relaxing and chilled out that I wouldn't recommend taking a vacation without it. Case it point the first track off his latest Tropical House mixtape, his remix of Calvin Harris's Summer. Don't take that as a green light to skip over the whole tape, though. It's 53 minutes chalked full of feel good rhythms that could brighten anyone's day. Much love to Klingande for hosting the latest Tropical House package of goodness...#Klingande

"Too Turned Up That I Can't Turn Down"

Just when you thought Waka Flocka and Lil Jon were going to become Hip Hop fossils, trap music came to save the day. I say trap music as a general term, but in the new heat rock below, it's Flosstradamus coming to the rescue. In general, I was annoyed with Flockaveli as a Hip Hop artist, but I'll admit, he's much more palatable over a raucous trap beat. The whole "too turned up that I can't turn down" hook is catchy as hell and you better believe that last build up and drop is worth the price of admission. If you're in need of a track that can take a party from rowdy to off the chain, I'd suggest giving this one a try...#TTU

Autograf Breathes Fresh Air Into Gust of Wind

A few months back I raved about the original version of Pharrell and Daft Punk's Gust of Wind for its undeniable funk. I still have yet to remove the track from my go-to playlists, which is a feat in and of itself. Now, thanks to Autograf, we have an electronic version that's ripe for summer. It's not a huge departure from the original, but the whole "Future House" feel of the track provides enough poolside appeal to be a solid addition to your upcoming party playlist...#GustOfWind

Disclosure Was Just Frontin'

I can appreciate a good throwback remix like Disclosure's remix of Pharrell and Jay Z's Frontin'. Shoot, the original version was released back in 2003, making it over a decade old. Call me old, but it doesn't seem like that long ago and in general, it speaks to the longevity of Pharrell as an artist. He has reinvented himself in a much more funk filled incarnation the past few years, but he's been making great music for well over a decade now.

As far as Disclosure is concerned, they strike me as the leaders of the deep house movement. As the movement has gained steam over the past two or so years in the US, they have been leading the way in brining their style across the pond from the UK. I applaud the way they transformed the original version of Frontin' into a slightly more uptempo, chilled out version. You can bet this will resonate with those like me who have been drifting from Hip Hop toward EDM since the millenium...#Frontin

Videos of the Week June 6th

Lots of really solid music videos this week led by Miguel's Simplethings. I really dig the black and white aesthetic, it fits the beautiful simplicity of the track. Adding to that is One Republic's visuals for Love Runs Out and the all-too-mysterious BANKS new one for Drowning. They both tell stories of love taking it toll, but in two very different tones.

If you're in the mood for some fun and excitement, you'll enjoy the fun little coffee run competition that deadmau5, Skrillex and Dillon Francis undertook. Lots of shenanigans were had by all. Finishing off the week's top 5 is yet another trailer for an upcoming festival in the form of Chicago's Spring Awakening Festival. I feel like EDM festivals are growing on trees these days, but they have still found a way to be personally elusive. Someday I will attend one of them and the highlights will be shared, bet dat!...#SpringAwakening

deadmau5 Drives the Infra Turbo Pigcart Racer

Ah yes, that's more like it. In case you were wondering whether deadmau5's new album would include a few trademark tracks, look no further than Infra Turbo Pigcart Racer. It's a non-stop, nine and a half minute repetitive symphony of synths that would play really well in a racing video game. It's another solid addition to the upcoming while(1<2) tracklist that is slated to hit shelves in less than two weeks. The track won't be a huge hit around clubs worldwide, but I can very easily close my eyes and see him spending a good fifteen minutes introducing and deconstructing the track in concert. "Burnin' Down the Night Shootin Bullets at the Moon"

I'm going to frame this as a make up post. What do I mean by that? Well, I clearly missed the bus on Florida Georgia Line's mega-hit Cruise last year and despite my clear dislike for country, I ended up jumping in with two feet on the track. It's like that thing you really hate (Country), but when mixed with something you really like (Hip Hop), it becomes this awesome new thing.

Now, before you listen, don't expect to another top five single. What you're going to hear below is a really catchy remix to a track that will get some top 40 airplay. Jason Derulo's vocals and a little bass took the original This is How We Roll to another level. It's got sing-along appeal and with the slightly over-the-top Hip Hop lyrics that will serve as catnip to the non-Country audience. Better get used it to it, you're going to hear it all summer...#ThisIsHowWeRoll

"We Are the Fortunate Ones Imitations of Re-bel-li-on"

Over the past two decades, I've briefly went in and out of a few rock phases. I say rock, but what I mean is Linkin Park and their brand of rock/Hip Hop/pop. Their previous two albums have been decent, but their new album has fans really excited because they are getting back to their rock roots. It has everything you'd want in a Linkin track with some Chester yelling and on point production led by Mike Shinoda. In about two weeks, The Hunting Party will hit shelves with Rebellion leading the way as the most hype Linkin Park single in years...#TheHuntingParty

A Whole Lot of Tropical House Mashing

As more and more remixes like the one below surface, Tropical House continues to gain steam. There's an undeniably carefree spirit to the cheery synths that Matoma & Nelsaan inject into to John Mayer's remix of Tom Petty's Free Fallin'. It's more smooth than it is uptempo, making it less house and more tropical, but you won't hear me complaining. It's a fresh squeezed glass of audible happiness that can turn around even the worst day. You have my full permission to start the day off on the right foot with this one...#FreeFallin

"We Already Got Spring 2015 Poppin''

In case you thought the end of the Raptors season was going to lead to silence from Drake, here comes a subtle hint toward a new album dropping in the next year. What initially had me really excited about 0-100/The Catch Up was the production backing on the track. Both Boi-1da and 40 got in on the track with Nineteen85 and managed to collectively produce a track that succeeds in it's simplicity. Lyrically it stays true to the two personality tracks like Tuscan Leather with braggadocio followed by well thought out, introspective bars. Its these types of tracks that continue to set Drake apart creatively because he's still one of very few who can run with just about any Hip Hop crowd imaginable from thuggish rap to radio friendly Hip Hop. Spring 2015 seems far off, but the fact that we now have a chapter 1 of the next book will make the next 365 all the more exciting...#0to100
